1 1. Cashews bring health benefits: Study More about Cashews bring health benefits: India is among the top cashew producing nations. The ministry of commerce sponsored a randomised control study on consumption of cashews. The study was conducted on Indians with type 2 diabetes. The study, done in Chennai, went on to prove health benefits for those eating cashews, even showing positive results in the red rag area for these nuts: cholesterol. Besides reducing blood pressure, the nuts also increased HDL. Topic: Culture 2. Shigmo parade starts March 3 More about Shigmo parade : Goa will hold the annual Shigmo float parade in its major cities from March 3 to 17. Shigmo is the traditional spring festival celebrated by farmers in rural Goa. This year, a spectacular display of Goan ethnicity and mythology will be on show. Traditional dances are also on the agenda. 3. MIFF: Selection jury protests film exclusion More about jury protest : At the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2017, the members of the Indian Panorama selection jury took on the Information and Broadcasting Ministry for the exclusion of two films, Nude and S Durga, from the final line up. Festival director Manish Desai said the 16 minute short documentary continues to officially be a part of the competition but cannot be screened publiclyunder the provisions stipulated in the Cinematograph Act. For a public screening it has to have either a censor certificate or an exemption from the Ministry. The film has been denied exemption for MIFF by the Ministry but reportedly without giving any clear reason. This is against the right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution. 1 P a g e
2 More about Hyper endemic trachoma: 4. Hyper endemic Trachoma It is an infectious condition known to cause blindness. A public health project in Car Nicobar set out to eliminate the rare occurrence of hyper endemic trachoma. Trachoma is hyper endemic in many of the poorest and most rural areas of 41 countries of Africa, Central and South America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East, says the WHO, which has been pushing the GET 2020 (Global Elimination of Trachoma by 2020) alliance since India is a partner. When Car Nicobar was again assessed in February 2017, trachoma prevalence was down to1.6%. India moved to apply for trachoma free status over a meeting with WHO officials on January 11, High court terms February 4 bandh call unconstitutional Topic: Indian Polity More about the issue: The High Court of Karnataka on Friday declared as unconstitutional the call given by some organisations for observing bandh on February 4 over the Mahadayi river water dispute. Pointing out that the Supreme Court way back in 1998 itself had declared bandh as unconstitutional, the High Court directed the State government, its officials and the law enforcing agencies to take all necessary steps to give effect to the declarations made by the apex court. The petitioner had questioned the bandh calls while citing the decisions of the Supreme Court, which had declared that there cannot be any right to call or enforce a bandh, which interferes with the exercise of the fundamental freedoms of other citizens, in addition to causing national loss in many ways. Topic: India Polity 6. Jallikattu pleas go to Constitution Bench More about Jallikattu pleas go to Constitution Bench: The Supreme Court on Friday referred to a Constitution Bench to decide whether the people of Tamil Nadu can preserve jallikattu as their cultural heritage under Article 29 (1) of the Constitution and demand its protection. 2 P a g e

According to the minister exit exam will hinder the economic independence of the students and put additional burden on the students. Several students have also raised objection to one of the clauses in the Bill, which states that fees would be fixed for 40% of the seats in private medical institutions and deemed universities. The Bill, introduced in the winter session of Parliament, has been referred to a standing committee after criticism from various quarters. Topic: Geography 8. World Wetlands Day In news: World Wetlands Day is celebrated on February 2 each year to mark the Day the Convention on Wetlands was adopted in the Iranian City of Ramsar in India is a party to the Convention since 1982 and committed to the Ramsar approach of wise use of wetlands.
