Victoria had a long history of peace movements from the actions against conscription during the First World War, to the Council against War and Fascism before the Second World War. One such organisation, the Victorian Peace Council, was instrumental in setting up CICD in 1959 and disbanded soon after, leaving only its VPC Research and Information Centre in existence until Since its inception in 1959, the CICD has actively campaigned for peace and disarmament, acting most notably as a coordinating facility for anti-vietnam war protest, especially the Moratorium Campaigns. Its members have also been active in campaigns as extensive as the anti-omega protests and anti-nuclear test protests. Its campaign files attest to its diligence and co-operation with other organisations such as the Australia-East Timor Association, the Burchett E:\UMArchives\lists pdfs\cicd.doc 1

2 Committee, MAUM and PND. RELATED COLLECTIONS: NOTE ON LISTING: Burchett Passport Committee Collection John Ellis Photograph Collection Victorian Peace Council Collection Sam Goldbloom Poster Collection Movement Against Uranium Mining Collection The records have been listed here by John Ellis, long time supporter of CICD and photographer of the movement who has occasionally provided commentary on the events, and especially photographs, recorded in these files. The majority of files were well arranged and titled by CICD, but there were many miscellaneous publications from related organisations interstate and overseas which had been collected and were received in no apparent order. Artificial series have been created to assist researchers to locate relevant records, but given the interfiling of some records and publications, it would be wise for researchers to search widely through the series and files. Some items listed in the initial 1997 box list, mainly photographs mounted for exhibition and posters, have not been located in the course of the reprocessing project. Any missing items have been noted, and the temporary box or item number retained until the items have been found and series numbered into the final list. LISTED BY: John Ellis DATE: Initial list completed May Reprocessing and reboxing June 2004-February 2005; March 2006 E:\UMArchives\lists pdfs\cicd.doc 2
