3 ROLES AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF VIRGINIANS (5b) Roles of Virginians in the Revolutionary War Era Virginia patriots served in the Continental Army and fought for independence against the British, leading to the British surrender at Yorktown. During the war, women took on more responsibility to support the war effort (some cooked for the soldiers, some made clothing, and some even helped fight the war). Some enslaved African Americans from Virginia fought for a better chance at freedom while some free African Americans fought for independence in the American Revolution. Many American Indians fought along side both the Virginia patriots and the British. Contributions of Virginians during the Revolutionary War Era George Washington provided military leadership by serving as commander-inchief of the Continental Army. Thomas Jefferson provided political leadership by expressing the reasons for colonial independence from Great Britain in the Declaration of Independence. Patrick Henry inspired patriots from other colonies when he spoke out against taxation without representation by saying, give me liberty or give me death. James Lafayette, an enslaved African American from Virginia, served in the Continental Army and successfully requested his freedom after the war. Do You Know? what the British Parliament is? Revolutionary period This referred to the 13 American colonies of the what independence means? Independence means not wanting to be ruled or controlled by others. The colonists wanted to run their own government and to be able to make decisions for themselves. Pick one of these Virginians and find out more of his/her contributions. (You might try to find a library book or look on the Internet.)
