1 The Week Ahead February 2017 Plenary session and committee meetings in Strasbourg Plenary CETA final vote. Parliament will vote on the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on Wednesday, after a morning debate on the landmark deal, which aims to boost goods and services trade and investment flows. Lead MEPs will hold a joint press conference with Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström after the vote, at Canada s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address the full Parliament on Thursday at It is the first-ever visit by a Canadian Prime Minister to the European Parliament. Combatting terrorism. MEPs will vote on a new counter-terrorism law, which will add to the EU list of terrorism crimes acts such as foreign fighters travelling to conflict zones to join terrorist groups and returning to the EU and lone wolves preparing attacks. The new law will also provide for better protection and help for victims of terrorist attacks. (Debate Wednesday, vote Thursday) External border checks. New rules to tighten the screening of EU citizens and third country nationals entering the EU are up for a debate and final vote. The amended Schengen Border Code will allow for systematic data checks at external borders to identify travelers returning from battlefields or using false or stolen documents. A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday at (Debate Wednesday, vote Thursday) Cutting carbon emissions. MEPs will discuss how to curb greenhouse gas emissions further by means of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and vote on a mandate for lead MEPs to start negotiations with member states. (Debate Monday, vote Wednesday). Austria s President. On his first international trip, the newly-elected President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, will address Parliament in a formal sitting on Tuesday at Future of Europe. Proposals for reforming the EU to make it more efficient and allow it to address citizens needs more directly, while also making the Eurozone economy more resilient to outside shocks, will be set out in three resolutions. (Debate Tuesday, votes Thursday) Robotics. The EU needs common rules for the fast-evolving field of robotics, say MEPs in a legislative resolution to be put to the vote on Thursday. MEPs want EU ethical standards and rules to establish liability for accidents, particularly those involving driverless cars. A press conference is scheduled before Wednesday s debate.
