Civil Society is closely related to social participation in all spheres of everyday life: from the shaping of civic, public and private institutions; to increased social cohesion; and realizing democratic rights in contemporary societies. Whilst globalization and the transition to a knowledge-
3 based society are seen as the key factors in creating economic growth, and greater social and political integration, it may also carry risks for individuals, families and communities and may result in greater social marginalization and exclusion and thereby a weaker social cohesion in the society. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan Lecture 2: Ideology Tidspunkt 18/ kl. 10:45-12:45 Underviser Sune Haugbølle ( suneha@ruc.dk ) After the Cold War, some social scientists predicted the end of ideology. As the case of Islamism has shown, ideological clashes and contentions continue to shape world affairs. This class gives a brief introduction to theories of ideology from Marx to today. This class gives students tools to analyse political culture around the world as well as transnational politics based on religious, national and cultural identity. The new social media and the internet in general now play considerable roles in citizen activism and political uprisings in authoritarian regimes from East Asia to the Middle East. Even in Western democratic societies, social movements and political participation are increasing digitalized: it may be discussed to what extent vital political institutions are being reconfigured and new arenas are opened by the new media, or if we should just see the them as intertwined with lived realities.

This lecture discusses the role of civil economies and society in globalized forms of mass production, regulation and consumption. Obviously, global production and consumption patterns are increasingly unsustainable and giving rise to climate change, while at the same time the emerging third world economies demand an increasing share of global consumption. 5 Underviser Johan Fischer ( johanf@ruc.dk ) The middle class occupies a mythical place in the advent of development and modernity. The last two decades or so has witnessed a massive expansion of the middle class in developing countries. This lecture argues that we need to unpack this class transformation in particular spatial and temporal contexts and shows how these transformations have global effects. Nowhere is this more evident than in developing Asia. The lecture explores a number of dimensions of middle-classness : religious revivalism, political activism, consumer culture, the mass media and state-market nexuses. Comparing developments in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, it is argued that the emergence, consolidation and future of the middle class follows different logics. Ethnos 72(1): Lecture 8: Globalization, Citizenship and Diversity Tidspunkt 01/ kl. 10:45-12:45 This lecture includes two different aspects of the relationship between citizenship and diversity. First, the lecture gives a presentation of Nancy Fraser s integrated theory of justice which has been developed by combining recognition and redistribution. This theory is based on a critique of the rising dominance of the politics of recognition which at least to some extent miss to explain the growing inequality and unequal distribution of resources in the world. N. Fraser has later on also integrated the political dimension in her more recent work. This theoretical conceptualization between recognition, redistribution and representation can be used in explaining diversity and inequality by gender and ethnicity. The second aspect of the lecture will be a discussion of the relationship between social cohesion, diversity and ethnicity in defining the citizenship in a globalised world. The relationship between globalization, migration and its impact on social network and social cohesion will be discussed based on two approaches: the structural approach on classes taken by Standing in The Precariat and the relational approach taken by Putnam in the literature on social capital

Annual Review of Sociology, Vol 37: pp Lecture 10: Globalization, Civil Society and Participatory democracy Tidspunkt 15/ kl. 10:45-12:45 The development, present state and possible weakening of civil society and active participation have been intensively discussed in the recent decades. The concepts have developed from slogans used in opposition to totalitarian regimes in East-Central Europe into catchwords in worried reflections on issues such as social fragmentation, political alienation, and deterioration of community life in Western societies. The organised civil society, citizenship and civic participation take different forms and institutional contexts depending on the welfare system. These differences and their structural background will be scrutinised in the lecture, including arguments about how this has an impact on how to cope with the impact of globalisation.
