The basic field of IR is also laid out through four great debates: (i) The realist response to utopian liberalism; (ii) The behaviouralist response to traditional IR-approaches; (iii) The Neo-Marxist response to traditional IRapproaches; (iv) Post-modernist response to traditional IR-approaches. Chapter 1 and 2, pp (57 pages)

The legacy of Morgenthau lives on in Neo-classical Realism which picks up on a number of his core ideas and expands them with more recent social science insights. In a sense Neo-classical Realism can be seen as a response to the overtly narrow focus of Neo-Realism which is the topic of the subsequent lecture. Chapter 3, pp (16 pages) Layne, C. International Security 29(2) (2006): Neo-realism w/ Michael Kluth Tidspunkt 21/ kl. 10:15-12:00 Sted møde (10) Neo-Realism is currently the leading mainstream IR paradigm. It emphasise the structural properties of the international system and shares the great power focus, anarchy assumption and a preoccupation with balancing practices with other schools of Realism. Neo-Realism, however, harbours important tensions and in this lecture we shall explore the main difference between the defensive realist position of Waltz vs. the offensive position of Mearsheimer. Neo-liberalism demonstrates how trust and cooperation can emerge in both an anarchic class-room and international system. We will look at some of the major global trends (the spread of democratization, international organizations and global networks) that form the basis for liberalism and neo-liberalism. The basic assumptions underlying neo-liberalism and liberalism will be sketched out and contrasted. We will discuss how institutions can overcome collective action impediments and spur cooperation instead of conflict despite the existence of an anarchic system. The lecture will draw on game theory. This lecture focuses on historical materialist perspectives in IR. 5 Can international relations be understood as an international society where norms and social institutions guide the conduct of states? You will notice that this is very similar to the question posed in the constructivism lecture. Indeed, the focus of the two schools of thought does overlap to a large extent. Yet, the English School draws on a wider range of methods, including philosophy and history, and also addresses the ethical question of how states should ideally act in global politics. Critical Perspectives: Gender approaches w/ Laura Horn Tidspunkt 02/ kl. 10:15-12:00 'Men make war, women make children' - would you agree? In this lecture we focus on the relevance of gender perspectives for understanding International Relations. We will discuss different perspectives on gender/feminism and IR by focusing on a range of different issues such as human security, terrorism and trafficking Jones, A. This lecture injects ethics in the discussion of international relations. The effect of globalization spurs novel philosophical discussions. Interdependence implies that the actions (both positive and negative) of a few can reverberate through the entire global system. Affluent citizens, therefore, might not only have a moral responsibility to aid their fellow citizens but also to aid the global poor.
