4 Biographical Note / Historical Note / Administrative History Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt is a notable Ball State University alumna who received her B.A. in English in 1958 and Education and M.A. in American literature in 1962 from Ball State. She went on to receive a Ph.D. in Southeast Asian studies from the Union Institute and has worked professionally as a war correspondent and photographer during the Vietnam War. She has written six books and hundreds of articles, has been nominated for a pulitzer prize, and has served as a consultant to the United States government on Southeast Asian affairs. Much of her work has been dedicated to raising the awareness of the plight of the Hmong minorities of Laos. Her book Tragic Mountains, written in 1993, exposed for many the vulnerability of the Hmong peoples following their involvement during the Vietnam War in support of the United States government. Many Hmong refugees were forcibly returned to Laos from Thailand following the conflict, exposing them to the retribution of the ruling party in Laos. The book took Ms. Hamilton-Merritt over fourteen years of research to completed and was listed as a finalist for the 1993 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for History. On multiple occassions since 1997, she has received formal nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on promoting awareness of the plight of Hmong refugees seeking to avoid repatriation to Laos. Scope and Contents This collection includes letters of support from authors, publishers, Hmong refugees, and professors for Dr. Jane Hamilton-Merritt's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize as well as nomination application materials and a selection of articles and publication on her work with the Hmong refugees of the Vietnam War.
