ARRANGEMENT The Oriental Club of Philadelphia Records are arranged alphabetically. AGENCY HISTORY The Oriental Club of Philadelphia was founded in 1888 by a group of scholars and other prominent intellectuals in the Philadelphia area in order to provide a forum for the exchange of academic ideas and new findings about the cultures of South and East Asia and the Near East. The organization has continued to the present day as a forum for the academic exchange of ideas about the literature and languages of the Asian continent. An independent organization, the membership consists of faculty, students and staff from universities and museums in the Greater Philadelphia area. Among - 1 -

5 the fields represented by members are History, Art History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Gender Studies.
