1 The Detroit, Michigan Designated Market Area is home to a total population of nearly 5 million people, and has one of the tenth largest Black Non-Hispanic populations in the nation. The Black Non-Hispanic segment of over 1 million currently makes up nearly one-quarter of the DMA s total population. Between 2000 and 2015, the majority of the Detroit DMA s growth came from the Hispanic and Asian Non-Hispanic segments of the population, 54% and 55% respectively. Large concentrations of Hispanics reside within ZIP codes in cities like Mexicantown and Springwells. Although the White Non-Hispanic segment makes up nearly 70% of the DMA s total population today, the size of the White Non-Hispanic population decreased by approximately 7% between 2000 and 2015; meanwhile the Black Non-Hispanic segment remained relatively flat. Large Black Non-Hispanic populations are found in ZIP codes within cities like Belle Isle, Highland Park and Lathrup Village. Declining unemployment rates and multi-million dollar investments are steadily stimulating the DMA s economic recovery as well as attracting some to Michigan cities like Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids. Nearly a third of Detroit s black households are middle class (CultureCode BSES C) and exactly one-third of the black households are upper or upper-middle class (BSES A and B). Fully 90% of Hispanics in Detroit are partially or fully acculturated (HA 1-4) with only 10% unacculturated (HA 5).
