Humana People to People Annual Report

Humana People to People The Chairperson s Greeting Dear reader, In this Annual Report we present you to what millions of people active in Humana People to People projects have been doing in The report is for 2009 in particular, but every action builds on more than 30 years of experience. It reflects in very broad lines the activities of the 35 development organizations operating in 43 countries, who form the Humana People to People movement. You will find many large numbers in this Annual Report. We will tell you of thousands of rural primary school teachers, who have been trained by Humana People to People in cooperation with the respective governments in Mozambique, Angola and Malawi, and those under training in India. You will read about the five million people actively involved in the program to stop HIV/AIDS called Total Control of the Epidemic in the year 2009 alone. We will talk about farmers joining the Farmers Clubs programs, and about families organized in Child Aid activities to improve the conditions for their children. The large numbers are important when you consider that we operate in the field of development, where the need is tremendous. We are happy to add our part to the actions humanity needs to take to create reasonable conditions of life for all of us on this globe, and we salute all our partners in development, who contribute to the same cause with your funding and actions. We ask you at the same time to read this report with the smallest number in mind. The One child getting a better start in life being embraced by a better teacher, the One small-scale farmer increasing her yield by joining a Farmers Clubs program, the One added act of compassion towards a neighbor stemming from being organized, the One kg of carbon emission saved because of the re-use of clothes. The name Humana People to People expresses the combination of the names of Development Aid from People to People, DAPP or UFF organizations in Europe and Africa, the ADPP from the Portuguese speaking countries in Africa, the Humana organizations in Europe, the Humana People to People organizations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In North America and the UK the members are called Planet Aid. Just as the associations themselves, the names are related and come together in Humana People to People. We know that it is the everyday life, it is the actions and efforts day by day together with each other that create the qualities and the so much needed developments. We are here for the long haul - and we hope and expect to continue and to expand our activities for the good of mankind. Maria Darsbo, Chairperson, The Federation for Associations connected to the International HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE Movement 2

Education Teachers for the rural primary schools The children in the rural primary schools are in dire need of good teachers - teachers, who are there, because they believe that the children s education is of utmost importance, and because they see the school and its teachers as contributors to the development of the rural community. Such teachers must be trained in a targeted program. The Humana People to People program trains teachers, who are capable of working in the rural setting and willing to do so, under the given conditions and with the ambition of creating change for the better. Humana People to People members train teachers per year at 24 teacher training colleges in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, and India, in cooperation with the Ministries of Education and as an integrated part of the education system, complementing government efforts and contributing to innovation and development of teacher training. What kind of a teacher The teacher masters his profession teaching with quality, is passionate about it, and has a habit and an attitude of continuously improving his or her level of skills, knowledge and competences. The teacher is a part of the community where the school is situated, and creates good relations to all sides; to the children, to the colleagues in the school, to the parents, and to the local leaders. The teacher transfers ethical and moral values to the children and to the community with his words as well as with his deeds. How to train such a teacher The Humana People to People teacher training concept places the teacher trainee in the center of his own education with the opportunity and the responsibility to acquire knowledge, skills and competences. At the same time, the training is based on team-work and social responsibility within a 4 group, which gives a strong combination of developed individuality and collectivity. Extensive practice in the primary school forms part of the education and is linked to studies within the subject areas of the national curriculum. Practice and theory meet in a dialectic process and enrich the learning. The teacher trainees share many responsibilities with each other and their college teachers within the management of the college. The boarding life is integrated in the training, and these elements provide the teacher trainees with extraordinary social and working experiences, which add to the forming of their characters and personalities as true educators. At the beginning of 2010, teachers have been trained and approximately 80% of them are working in rural schools. This is an achievement, meaning that the training of teachers for the rural primary schools contributes substantially to reaching the goals of universal the primary education with quality.

Education From Evaluation of the ADPP Teacher Training Program in Mozambique by external evaluators Ritva Alberts and Gaspar Sitefane, October 2009: The representative of the Ministry of Education and Culture repeatedly pointed out the relevance and the creativity of the EPF curriculum which, in many aspects, has contributed to the reformulation of the former primary teaching curriculum of the Ministry. The relevance of the practical component and its implementation, the community work accomplished through joint projects, was yet another aspect praised by the Ministry representative. The projects bring the community and the parents closer to the school. * EPF means Escolas de Professores do Futuro, the Schools for the Teachers of the Future, which is the name of the teacher training colleges in Portuguese. The assumptions of the EPF training correspond with the principles of UNESCO, defining the main cornerstones of learning: To learn how to know - To learn to do - To learn how to live with others - To learn to be. During the entire training period, the trainees learn to search for knowledge on their own and in teams, to analyze and to prove, first in their core team and later in front of a bigger team. The capacity for working within a team is systematically trained on basis of the assumptions mentioned, but above all through exercises in practice. 7 Education Vocational Training of the Youth At 11 Vocational Schools in 6 countries, thousands of young people are trained in valuable skills, such as agriculture, construction, motor mechanics, and business and administration. The training combines theoretical and practical elements, including school subjects and general knowledge. The skills training takes center stage, and also here a fruitful exchange between studies in the classroom and practical exercises in the workshops or in the fields is fundamental. Periods of attachment in neighboring commercial companies, farms or institutions are a valuable part of the program, where the reality of working life blends with what the students have learnt at the school. After completion, the students enter into their productive lives, still accompanied by the school in the start up phase. The Vocational Schools are boarding schools, and the students take part in operating the school institution together with their teachers. Planning, preparation and implementation of tasks within a certain area, and the meaning of personal responsibility are some of the capacities that are trained in this way. Culture, sports and a healthy life style add on to the personal development of the students. Schools for Children and Youth Humana People to People addresses marginalized children and youth in cooperation with governments by running 18 school institutions for orphans and vulnerable children and youth in 6 countries. Some of the schools are boarding schools, where a number of students stay at the school and have their home in a full time program. They get a solid offset for their future, along with some very good years of school life and safety in the company of responsible and caring grown-ups. They learn academic and practical skills, and they learn social skills by staying together with others. Thus they get well prepared for an independent life where they cater for themselves. In addition there are day students at these schools. Others are day schools with similar program elements. In India the schools are Academies for Working Children, especially designed with a flexible program to meet the needs the poorest slum children, and they work with the parents and communities to improve their conditions in various aspects. The children s schools have an extensive cooperation with the social welfare systems in the respective countries, who refer the students to the schools. 8 Agriculture and Rural Development Food security, income increase and the small-scale farmers To obtain food security for the billions of people, the small scale farmers must play a major role. Food security, food production and environment protection are closely linked and are important not only for the millions of farmers directly affected, but also for the societies at large. The farmers need to learn better farming methods, and they need to be integrated in the economy of their countries. With climate change having more and more consequences, the environment is threatened at a new level, and the struggle for the immediate food security and for making a surplus food production intensifies. If the environmental problems of the Earth are not solved, peace and stability will suffer even more than today. The Farmers Clubs Humana People to People programs train small-scale farmers in sustainable agriculture practices such as conservation farming, and equips the farmers with knowledge they can use to adjust to the changing conditions. As an integrated part of the training, the farmers get organized around exploring and sharing water resources, securing inputs and marketing of their produce. General knowledge and skills within nutrition, health and community development are also included. This concept is called Farmers Clubs. The aim is to provide the farmers with such knowledge and organization that they can respond to the needs of their families and communities today, increase their income, and become integrated in the market economy. In many Farmers Clubs the majority of the farmers are women. Thus the Farmers Clubs can also be regarded as a gender program, empowering the women, and it includes many club activities, which also focus on the well-being of the whole family with regard to water and sanitation, nutrition, health and education. The agriculture training of the farmers depends on the local conditions: some concentrate on crop husbandry, others on animal husbandry, some with irrigation, others pure dry-land farming. The farmers are organized in groups of 250 farmers with one project leader, who provides the agriculture training in practice and theory. The project leader also facilitate the organization of the farmers and trains them in self-organizing, so that lasting structures are built among them in the project period. National agriculture extension services are integrated in the programs for mutual benefit - the farmers learn from the extension workers, and the extension system is reinforced in a dynamic exchange. 8

Agriculture and Rural Development Farmers Clubs in farmers under training: in Malawi in Zimbabwe in Mozambique in China in Guinea Bissau, the training being characterized by the project leader leading the training from the midst of the farmers, the practical and theoretical training going hand in hand, and common organization. From Final Evaluation of DAPP Malawi Farmers Clubs, by G&TY Development Consulting, December 2009 Average value of a farmer s yearly crop production increased from 385$ to 680$. Average value of farmer s yearly life stock production increased from 164$ to 270$. Average increase of production value for a farmer was 396$ per year. Such results were achieved through organizing and mobilizing the farmers to change the methods of doing farming, better planning, crop diversification,...supported by an intensive cooperation with local leaders and government extension services. 9

Stop AIDS Only the people can liberate themselves from AIDS the epidemic This simple statement is the foundation of Total Control of the Epidemic, TCE. Total Control of the Epidemic, TCE, is the approach and the practice with which Humana People to People has systematically waged war against the virus of HIV and the disease of AIDS following in its wake. The health systems in the countries hardest hit are no match for the challenge of the HIV virus, despite multiple efforts to meet them. The people themselves, when knowledgeable and mobilized, are capable of acquiring a crucial impact on the proliferation and the transmission of the disease. Since 2000, the TCE Field Officers have talked with 10 million people: One on one - with the goal of each person taking control, individually and together with others: not to become infected or not to spread the disease and to live a long and healthy life. TCE works - A systematic approach TCE defines a geographical area of people as a TCE Area, which is organized in a three year campaign so that each and every person systematically gets knowledge and readiness to take control of the virus: they are constantly taught to understand what is HIV/AIDS, what it means to face HIV/AIDS, how to be able to defend themselves in a number of practical ways, how to act individually as well as together against the scourge, and how to join in an all out comprehensive battle to get HIV/AIDS under total control. Total Control of the Epidemic is a systematic approach to behavior change, with the aim of reaching every single person in the areas with information, education, counseling and mobilization to take control of HIV/ AIDS. Equipped with a map, a household register, an individual assessment tool, communication and counseling skills, the Field Officer walks through his field of people day after day, knocking on doors, visiting schools and workplaces. Talking, listening, answering questions, facilitating decisions about safe sexual behavior, mobilizing people to become volunteers, training peer educators, and setting up income generating activities. Passionates - volunteers from the areas - join the TCE Field Officers in their activities and continue fighting AIDS in their communities after the TCE program has been completed. They are crucial for the long term effect of the program. With its systematic approach, TCE reinforces the links between the people and the existing health services. TCE aligns itself with many other efforts, among others, those of the National AIDS Councils. TCE aims at achieving national coverage in country by country - an ambitious, but necessary goal to have in the fight against AIDS. 10

Stop AIDS Some main conclusions from Report of the impact evaluation of TCE in South Africa (Independent evaluation by Human Sciences Research Council, Wits University, South Africa, March 2010): An overwhelming 92.9% of respondents in the Greater Tubatse Municipality area said TCE had made lasting changes in their lives in relation to HIV/AIDS, 94.8% said TCE campaign was accepted in the community, 93.8% said TCE increased their resolve to know their HIV status, 94.2% said one-to-one approach helped them take total control of the epidemic and 90.2% said TCE had impact on their sexual behavior and practice. These results are an overwhelming endorsement of the impact of TCE in the Greater Tubatse Municipality community. 11

Stop AIDS The TCE Field Officer It is also very good that TCE employs local people. The local person makes TCE user friendly. It is no longer an external concept working from outside. It becomes home grown, and the people working in the TCE area are able to view problems against the background of the people they are working with. This is very helpful. When you interact with people personally, you arouse their confidence in you and gain their respect and their acceptance. (Prof. Elopy Nimele Sibanda, M.B., B.Ch., MSc, M.D.) TCE Statistics, areas 1. Visited and registered 1 st time Total number of visits Total number tested for HIV Active as TCE Passionates Made an individual plan TCE Compliant Number of people in lessons Condoms distributed Pregnant women, info of PMTCT No. households registered Malaria, TB and other big diseases The systematic approach used in TCE, which is at the same time mobilizing whole communities and building on the importance of each and every individual, is also used when combating other serious diseases. Malaria ranges number 3 of the most dangerous diseases with by far the most cases, only surpassed by diarrhea. To combat malaria it is necessary to mobilize the whole community. Actions include spraying, information and distribution of mosquito nets, as well as actions to get rid of breeding places for the malaria bearing mosquitoes. It is also necessary to make individual protection plans, based on the realities in the community. Humana People to People organizations participate in all types of efforts, through specialized projects or through programs in connection with other project types. Tuberculosis is lurking in the wake of HIV/AIDS. In TCE, the care for people who have TB is integrated, as is the information about how to avoid getting the disease. The treatment regiment is similar to the one of ARVs - consistent and accurate administration of the medication is crucial for success. The system of Directly Observed Therapy or DOT has been translated into the TRIO system in TCE, where an infected person gets the assistance of one family member and one passionate to adhere to the medication. Thus experiences from TCE and from TB treatment go well together. TCE has also participated actively in campaigns to stop the spread of cholera, for example in Zimbabwe in 2008/9 during the cholera outbreak. Again, the methodology of going from house to house, from person to person, proved to be efficient in curbing the spread of the disease. 12

Stop AIDS HOPE Humana The continuous fight against AIDS Another approach in the fight to stop AIDS is taken by the HOPE Humana projects. HOPE Humana establishes a center in the community as the base for actions to stop HIV/AIDS and to support people and communities affected by the disease. From the HOPE Center, the project operates in three main lines: Health Services including Voluntary Counseling and Testing, Outreach Programs and Opinion Forming Activities. The people around the HOPE Center are organized around these activities. In Health Services, the HOPE Center facilitates HIV testing, combined with the necessary pre- and post-test counseling. The Centers promote the local health structures and link up with them in case of opportunistic diseases such as TB, and promote ARV treatment and adherence to treatments. Some HOPE Centers have own testing facilities, while others refer to and cooperate with other test centers. The Outreach Programs include positive living clubs, which are supporting people living with HIV, lessons in home based care and organization of volunteers to carry out home based care, lessons in nutrition and establishment of nutrition gardens, support for orphans and their caregivers, and much more all needed in the fight against AIDS and in dealing with the consequences of the AIDS epidemic. The HOPE projects perform Opinion Forming Activities by speaking up about HIV/AIDS in public, through the National AIDS Councils, and by having an extensive cooperation with other organizations and institutions, such as churches and schools, on local as well as on national level. 13

Community Development The community building projects of Humana People to People have as a common denominator that they are Fighting shoulder to shoulder with the Poor. They are characterized by being placed in the midst of the communities where they operate, together with the people, dealing with issues of great importance for the people. They are also characterized by being multi-stringed, as is the struggle carried out by poor people to survive and improve their conditions. The fight of the Poor demands jacks of all trades to succeed. The project leader and the people she works with must master this. The basic project programs of health, education and production complement programs of the governments, often related to the Millennium Development Goals, and they also include campaigns over a longer period of time and shorter actions within a specific issue. The project serves as the host of the campaign or action, using all its internal and external structures to promote the issue at hand. Child Aid In the 20 th year of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Child Aid is still one of the many contributors to making those rights come true. Child Aid is what it says: Aid to the child, to grow, learn and live in safe and healthy conditions. All parents wish to create such conditions for their children, but many do not manage on their own. Broadly based, Child Aid builds the capacity in the families and their communities in an all-inclusive program, recognizing that in order to nurture children successfully, the entire community must be strengthened. Families are brought together to address health and sanitation, income generation, education, district development, environmental awareness, and participation of children. Child Aid has extensive outreach programs with the whole community with information and lessons on health, nutrition, hygiene, environment and 14 other issues, and with practical actions to improve conditions where needed. Here the primary schools in the operation areas are important cooperation partners - children, teachers and parents alike. The concept of Child Aid leaves space for locally determined additions to the main areas, and the concept operates with using various structures in the organization of the children and their families, for example by forming Village Action Groups of families with a coordinator, who is a volunteer from the local community. The Village Action Group works together in the day-to-day implementation of their own activities, and mobilizes more volunteers to participate. Most of the Child Aid programs operate among the rural population, but the concept has also shown efficient in the slums of big cities, for example in the townships of Soweto, South Africa.

Environment and Recycling of Clothes Tens of thousands of clothes collection bins are placed in shopping centers, parking lots and residential areas in Europe and North America in collaboration with municipalities and private entities, giving people the opportunity to donate their used clothes to a Humana People to People organization. The Humana People to People second hand clothes collection addresses environment, economic development, and social development at the same time. The environment is protected, as the re-use of clothes saves resources for production of new clothes, minimizes the emission of green house gasses, and spares the landfills from millions of tons of clothes. Economic development is supported through the job creation - jobs are created in the formal sector as well as in the informal sector with sorting, washing, transporting and selling the clothes - and through the local trade that stimulates economic activity. Social development is supported, as the surplus from the trade both in Europe and the USA and in Africa is used for development projects. Adding value to 2 nd hand clothes and creating social development The adding of value to used clothes starts when a person in Europe or North America decides to donate her used clothing in one of the many clothes collection bins, placed in shopping centers, parking lots and other convenient places for dropping off the clothes. Instead of going to the landfill, the clothes enters into re-circulation. This person acts with environmental consciousness and at the same time with the wish to support development. More than 10 million people in Europe and North America do so and reduce CO 2 emission with tons every year (Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen, 2009). The collected clothes is sometimes sold directly at the commercial market, and the proceeds is donated to development projects. In Europe, the clothes typically goes to the sorting center, where pieces of clothes suitable for sales locally are picked out, and the rest is sorted for shipment to Africa, for resale to other traders, or to the recycling industry. 16 The clothes sold in second hand shops or at the international market generates a surplus, which is used for supporting development projects in the Humana People to People movement. The clothes for Africa is donated to Humana People to People organizations in Angola, DR Congo, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. Here the clothes is sorted into many different categories and re-packed in smaller bales for sale. The surplus from this sale supports social projects. The customers buy the type of product they can sell best, and they often have family members or employees to treat the clothes and sell them in the market places. Also here a surplus is generated and sustains a family. People get the opportunity to buy good clothes at an affordable price. This is most often the only opportunity they have to buy clothes, as new clothes are sold at prices out of their reach, and they are not present in many of the rural communities.

Environment and Recycling of Clothes From Container in Europe to Market in Africa An Example: DAPP in Malawi s 2 nd Hand Clothes In 2009, DAPP in Malawi s Clothes and Shoes projects sold tons of second hand clothes. This was done by 260 employees - to customers, who each employs another two persons, which brings the number of jobs, formal and informal, up to DAPP Malawi handled the sorting and grading of the clothes at centers in Mzuzu in the north of the country and in Blantyre in the south. The clothes were sold at 13 sales stations and 10 retail shops, and at 72 market places throughout the country. The surplus from the sales covered a part of the operation costs for DAPP Malawi s development projects. DAPP Malawi received clothes donations from members of Humana People to People in Finland and Estonia. 17

Cross-cutting Issues Environment and the Struggle for Development The poorest people have to fight the hardest to protect the environment. They depend on the soil, the water and the weather for their livelihoods, for their immediate survival. Even though they contribute least to global warming and climate change, they are the ones to feel the consequences first and most - and no doubt they will also have to adjust their lives to the changes. Humana People to People allies with people in all project types around the issues of environment and strives to influence the policies laid down within this important area. Women and Men as Equal Partners in Development Women are bearers of many development initiatives. They are the farmers, the mothers, the teachers and the trades people, but most often they are not properly trained for taking on the responsibilities they actually carry. They need to build their capacities, to organize themselves to solve some of the issues, and they need assistance to do so. In the Humana People to People projects, empowerment of women and the unity between men and women is a crosscutting issue, which can be seen and felt in all projects, and which can be heard in the public debate about gender issues. 18 Fighting the big diseases The big diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, cholera, various infections and diarrhea constitute threats to the lives of millions of people, and these diseases must be attacked from many different angles to diminish their consequences. All projects working with the living conditions of the people are engaged in fighting the big diseases in one or many ways. This includes direct campaigns to prevent the diseases, long-term efforts to improve nutrition, improvement of water supplies and sanitation, and emergency actions in case of epidemics.

Cross-cutting Issues Tree planting Trees planted in their millions in Farmers Clubs, Child Aid and Teacher Training Colleges help the environment and thereby the people in many ways. Most often indigenous trees that survive better. Soil protection Production of compost, establishment of vertiver grass contours, soil cover and crop rotation are methods for all families, who do farming. The methods are promoted and taught in several projects. Firewood saving stoves Women and children spend long hours fetching firewood. By building firewood saving stoves in Child Aid and Farmers Clubs they are spared for much work, and trees are spared from being cut down. Water management Organized use of scarce water resources, protection of wells, recharging of boreholes and wells and minimum water usage in irrigation are elements of environment protection too in many projects. The Girls The Teacher Training Colleges promote and support girls completion of primary school. Parents and school authorities are involved, the girls are organized in clubs and get help to catch up in school subjects. The Farmers In Farmers Clubs and Child Aid thousands of women are trained to produce more, earn an income and thus get in a position to take much more control of their own and their families lives. The Teachers The Teacher Training Colleges aim at minimum 50% female students. Mutual respect between men and women is built through sharing responsibilities in the daily school life along non-traditional gender lines. The Business Women In the 2 nd hand clothes business, many customers are women, who make their livelihood from trade with clothes and shoes. They also receive business skills training as part of the customer care. Information Much disease prevention can be done with proper information. Together with local health clinics, schools, and in the daily work in TCE, HOPE, Child Aid, Farmers Clubs and the schools, information is spread. Campaigns Before the onset of the rainy season a thorough malaria campaign can prevent many cases of malaria. Many projects use their existing structures to carry out such campaigns in schools and communities. Hygiene and sanitation Secure water supplies, access to latrines, cleanliness and order around the homes combined with healthy habits such as hand washing, help to avoid many diseases. Child Aid and HOPE mobilize and organize this. Emergencies When disaster hits, the Humana People to People projects are there on the ground, ready to use all forces to assist and cooperate with the people, government agencies, UN organizations and NGOs. 19

From a Variety of Activities Self Help Gardens with Irrigation in Zimbabwe 180 Self Help Groups of women were formed by DAPP Zimbabwe with the purpose of establishing communal gardens with low cost irrigation, and through this responding to the needs of women with big social responsibilities and few means. The women earned an income, got better nutrition, created unity among themselves, and reached out to vulnerable community members in need. The project was established with support of the British Embassy and built on the structures of Farmers Clubs in the same area. Literacy Campaign in Mozambique ADPP Mozambique implements a 3 year literacy program in 5 districts in the province of Zambezia in cooperation with ADRA International farmers are being trained by ADRA in farming skills, and the same farmers are being trained by ADPP to read and write. The two programs complement each other: the farmers gain from the literacy campaign, and it supports them in learning better farming methods. The methodology used is called Reflect and builds on using the real life situations of the learners. Mobilizing Youth against AIDS in Guinea Bissau ADPP Guinea Bissau s experience with vocational training of youth and its profound roots in the population in Guinea Bissau form the foundation of a program combining the fight against AIDS with short vocational courses for youth. A group of instructors and mobilizers moves around from district to district and teach the youth about how to avoid HIV and at the same time gives them skills courses which will help them to earn a living in the informal or the formal sector. The program is funded by Global Fund. Micro-financing for Women in India Humana People to People India s Microfinance aims at ensuring that poor women are no longer exploited by money lenders or denied access to credit. The project organizes them in groups, build their capacity and provides easy access to borrow maximum 250 USD at a time for establishment of production or trade. The result is that they can better manage their risks, build their assets gradually, develop their micro enterprises, thus enhance their capacity to earn an income, and enjoy an improved quality of life. 20

From a Variety of Activities International Volunteers in all Countries For the past 30 years, the international volunteers system of Humana People to People has been a significant, practical and ideological expression of the From People to People philosophy of the movement. Thousands of people of varied ages, have given a lump of their time as Development Instructors or Poverty Fighters, using all their skills and capacities, and building new ones at the same time. The volunteers prepare themselves for 4-6 months, work at a project for 4-6 months, and end with deciding their future. Total Malaria Control in Yunnan Province, China During a 5 year campaign, the project covers about 3 million people, mostly minorities, in 12 poor border counties, with information about malaria and will mobilize them to adopt practices in the households to prevent malaria. This is done by house to house visits and public educational activities, performed by 220 local Malaria Control Workers. The idea for the structure has been borrowed from TCE and is implemented by HPP China. The project is funded by Global Fund. Staff Capacity Building at Frontline Institute At Frontline Institute DAPP Zimbabwe trains professional key staff from the projects within the Humana People to People movement to work in the frontline of development. They are trained and equipped with knowledge, skills, ethics and attitudes enabling them to transform their dreams and wishes for a better world into practical action. The participants come from Africa, Latin America and Asia and blend in a fruitful international environment, while training Basic and Advanced Project Management. Clothes Collection and Awareness Campaigns in USA Planet Aid, Inc. is the US American member of Humana People to People. With a clothes collection system of boxes in 20 states in the USA, the organization makes it easy for people to combine protection of the environment with supporting development in impoverished countries. Planet Aid receives grants from government agencies, and has supported 60 development projects in 15 countries with more than 60 million $. Planet Aid also cooperates with schools, businesses and organizations in USA. 21

Here You Find Humana People to People Members From people to people - in Europe and North America Humana People to People organizations operate in 19 countries in Europe and North America, among them some of the world s richest. The basic philosophy is to create a stream of funds and useful commodities from people who have, to people in other parts of the world who have not. Everybody can participate and do good with what they have - for example by donating their used clothes to be re-used. The collected clothes is either sold directly on the international market, or is being treated in sorting centers in Europe, some sold in shops and other donated to member organizations in Africa for re-sale. With the collection of second hand clothes, usable clothes do not end up in the landfills, and resources for production of new clothes are saved. Thus donating their surplus clothes to a Humana People to People member organization, people help protect the environment and create development at the same time. Humana People to People organizations also mobilize funding for development projects from transnational institutions, governments, foundations, UN agencies and private donors in Europe, North America and Asia. The partnerships are based on genuine, shared interests in creating development for the people through one or more of the Humana People to People concepts. Networking among the Humana People to People organizations across continents creates a direct and meaningful connection between people in these very different parts of the world. 22 North America North America Canada USA Europe Austria Bulgaria Denmark Estonia Finland Germany Holland Italy Latvia Lithuania Norway Poland Portugal Slovenia Europe Spain Sweden UK Also present in: Belgium France Hungary Romania Slovakia Switzerland Turkey Ukraine Humana People to People at a glance More than 30 years experience in development work. 24 Approaches to Development From people to people and with the people The people can make changes. They can get together and find ways to improve their lives, solve their problems. The people need others to support them, assist, inspire, and give a hand. The most pressing issues facing humankind can better be solved if people in the rich part of the world and people in the poor part of the world are allies. Development is created in a collective process with broad participation, best with a mindful government in the lead, and with contributions from many sides. Humana People to People work with the people and is part of the people, because that is the only way to create development together. Fighting shoulder to shoulder with the Poor We do not engage in a struggle against an abstract phenomena called poverty. We do engage in the concrete struggle side by side with the people, who are the Poor. Nature does not, but societal developments of certain sorts do, produce the Poor. To root out the cause of the conditions for the Poor can be done as an action of man. With the base for the struggle being the Poor engaged in changing his own fate, we join forces with the Poor, governments, and progressive forces nationally and internationally in a collective effort to transform and in the long rung erase the existence of the conditions of the Poor. We operate in projects with good concepts The project is the unit of operation. It is solidly based on a concept, defining the idea, the overall contents of the program, the time frame, the organization of the people and the desired effects of the project. Each project is organized with a project leader, who shares the overall responsibility with one or more co-project leaders and a project council. The project leader lives in and is part of the community where the project operates. The concept is agreed upon with the organization and the people involved. With that in place, many people participate in formulating the aims and concrete actions of their specific involvement in the project, and even more people become involved, and new elements can be added as per necessity and desire of the community or partners. Holistic approach to development With a holistic approach to development we include all people involved in the matter: the children, the parents, the farmers, the teachers, the neighbors, the local leaders and the national governments, as well as our international partners. When people are in the process of creating better conditions for themselves and their communities, they do not work in single stringed sectors of development, but they handle the complex reality in which they face their challenges, and in which the solutions must be created. So do we - attacking the problems from more angles, and in cooperation to all sides. 24

Approaches to Development From the Charter HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE The dehumanized human being, the dehumanized society must meet the Solidary Humanism. Man standing shoulder to shoulder with all mankind. HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE On the platform of Solidary Humanism in the line of fire. From man to mankind. HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE From the haves to the have-nots. From the sound to the sick. From the storekeeper to the empty stomachs. From the liberated to the chained. From you to all of them. HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE yearns for a humanizing influence on this development. The influence of the Solidary Humanism. A project takes its beginning when two parties meet. The one that is in need and the one that wishes to supply help. We also knew, that the help should first and foremost, and in huge amounts, come from those vaults in governments possession, where the big part of the common wealth is stored. But we realized that we, the individuals, also had an obligation to help from man to mankind. From the meeting between the two parties the project is born. Thus we have not centered our activity on a single chosen sector, even though we are not blind for the benefits such a single line of activity can bring. We act when called upon, because we have experienced that it is exactly where the two parties meet that the greatest possibility lies for uniting with the needy, and, through that unity, for realizing the objectives of the project. As you well know, a project is a creation in its own right. And the spirits of creation demand from the project that it be of collective origin. 25

In Partnership with Many Partnership in Development builds on the understanding that progress and development must be created FROM PEOPLE TO PEOPLE. The driving force will always be the people involved in the issue at hand. But they need partners to do it. Partners who can provide the financing of development projects must contribute with funds, alongside government departments, local interest groups, civil society and individual activists. Partners who can organize and implement the programs leading to development must be there on the ground, among the people and with the people, to make the development happen. Thus, a beautiful trio can be established: the principal partner, who is the people themselves - the funding partner - and the implementing partner. Humana People to People has its strength in being an implementing partner with strong and innovative programs. Humana People to People sees the partnership in this trio as a great opportunity for all parties. For Humana People to People, because with funding what needs to be done can be done. For the funding partners, because in Humana People to People they will have a partner, who will implement what is promised and nothing less. A partner, who trust the people, and who enjoys the trust of the people, and who therefore act as part of the community where the development projects take place. A partner who has extensive experience in working with local, provincial and national authorities about problem identification and strategies for solutions. For the people and often the involved governments, because important development tasks can be solved. From the track record: 26 Evaluation of DAPP Child Aid projects in Zambia, November 2009 by MFS Holland Program Evaluation Consultant, C. Kasonka The program is also highly appreciated at all levels including the community. Partners at community level noted that the projects have improved the living conditions of a number of families around their catchment areas. Health personnel have attributed declines in diarrhea cases to the DAPP intervention, while Community Development workers have also noticed a decrease in the number of cases involving violation of human rights against women and children especially due to awareness raising activities carried out by DAPP in partnership with them. Mid-term review of Norwegian support to EPF Bie in Angola by Eva Marion Johannesen, Educare, for NORAD, October 2007 A prominent feature of ADPP/EPF is its close relation with the national and local education authorities. This has been a priority for ADPP since day number one in Angola. ADPP has had projects in Angola for 21 years, and the first EPF school was established in They are invited to join various developmental projects within basic education and teacher training. Their long and stable presence is appreciated and they are looked upon as reliable, trustworthy and competent. As the director of INDE said: ADPP is not only a partner, they are one of us.

In Partnership with Many UNICEF, Democratic Republic of Congo, Philippe Barange-Bigot, Chief of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Sector, June 2009 HPP-Congo employs a community-based approach to communicate the program, accompanying the villagers through the process of making lasting changes in their community through both infrastructure and behavior changes.... HPP-Congo is competent in the areas of project management, utilization of funds, and reporting. The projects activities were completed within the allotted implementation time frame. The management of the organization facilitates collaborative relationships with project partners including local government counterparts. H.E. the President of Mozambique, Armando E. Guebuza, at the official opening of ISET/One World University of ADPP Mozambiuqe, November 2008: This institution places itself in a position to transfer techniques for fighting the absolute poverty to the communities...we witness an institution, which, by being part of the local community will live intensely in its daily life with the challenges imposed on the community by poverty. Altogether this will make it possible for the institution and the community to exhange experiences and form alliances, which will accelerate the victory over this plague, the poverty... End of Project Evaluation Report, Farmers Clubs, DAPP Zimbabwe, November 2009, by Dr. Isaiah Nyagumbo, University of Zimbabwe Overall it is clear the project has made significant impacts on the productivity and livelihoods of the beneficiaries. Cross cutting issues such as gender and HIV/AIDS were taken on board through involvement of women (more than 70%), training on HIV/ AIDS and the provision of nutritional supplements through herbs. In spite of the unfavorable political and economic environment prevailing during the year 2008, the project is commended for having achieved some outputs under the circumstances. (In partnership with Practica Foundation, funded by EU) Impact Assessment of Teacher Training - ADPP Mozambique, 2009, by Ritva Alberts and Gaspar Sitefane, October 2009 As one of the main results of the study it was found that the 2 ½ -year teacher training curriculum, which was in force for the assessed training, provides the teachers with a good theoretical basis and technique, allowing for the creation of the right personality for a true educator, at school and in the community alike. The interviews and conversations with the teachers trained by the ADPP-run EPFs and at other institutions and with the school directors all support this finding. (On the initiative of MFA Finland, funding teacher training) 27

About Humana People to People Humana People to People is a network of non-profit aid organizations in Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Latin America, all working in the field of international solidarity, cooperation and development. Humana People to People was born with the wish to contribute to the fight against colonialism and apartheid in the late 1970-ies. When the last countries of southern Africa had won their independence and later when apartheid was abolished, Humana People to People continued to contribute to building the new societies and better lives for the people. With the end of apartheid in 1994, it became clear that the struggle for development together with the poor people in the world was the natural continuation of the struggle against colonialism and apartheid. Humana People to People is based on Solidary Humanism, with a profound shoulder-to-shoulder attitude to people in need. Humana People to People work together with the people in the pressing issues facing mankind, such as education, health, food security, environment, child aid and economic development, and in relief aid. Humana People to People works together with the people and together with the governments in the countries. Often the development projects are found in rural areas where most people live, in the countries where Humana People to People work. The Humana People to People organizations are part of the national fabric, and the projects are part of the communities. The project leaders and other staff belong in the community where the projects are based, and whom they serve. As of the beginning of 2010, 35 independent, national development aid organizations are members of The Federation for Associations connected to the International Humana People to People Movement, with activities in 43 countries on five continents. The Federation is registered in Switzerland in Registre du Commerce de Geneve, no /
