ABSTRACT Teluk Kandis is a small village in Saloh, Kelantan. Its population consists of Malays followed by the Chinese and Indians. It was established in It is located close to two new villages: Tendong and Pasir Mas. The main sources of income are rice cultivation, work for government and small businesses. Many of the younger generation have migrated to the cities to seek better job opportunities. 1
INTRODUCTION Teluk Kandis was founded in It is a very small village located in Saloh, Kelantan. Most of the villages work in their rice fields. Some of them operate their own mini market or other small businesses. The villages which are close to Teluk Kandis are Pasir Mas and Tendong which are 5 to 10 Km away. Kota Bharu is a 30- minute drive away. Details of Teluk Kandis location are as follows: latitude of , longitude ; postcode The village had a population of approximately 90 people when it was founded in In 2013, its population stands at approximately 300. It has an aging population currently. This is because most of the younger generations have migrated to the cities in search of better employment opportunities. Government project in the village 2

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES According to our survey the main source of income in Teluk Kandis is rice cultivation. Most villagers plant their own rice fields. The rice produced is sold nationwide. Small businesses provide another source of income. Some villagers sell food while others sell basic household goods. These businesses are mainly small stalls by the roadside. 6 SOCIAL, CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICES Teluk Kandis has a population which comprises Malay (90%), Chinese and others. Because of the composition of its population, the main language spoken is Malay. The main religions practiced in this village are Islam, Buddhism and Taoism. Places of worship include a mosque for Muslims and a Kuan Kong temple for the Chinese. The main festivals celebrated in the village are Chinese New Year for the Chinese, Hari Raya Haji for the Malays and Thaipusam for Indians. 8 The Kuan Kong temple is a popular place to worship and pray for good fortune and fame. People who wish to visit this temple are advised to contact the temple s caretaker ahead. This is because the temple is normally closed. There is a notice placed on the temple wall which gives the caretaker s contact number. During Chinese New Year, most Chinese families invite family and friends for meals at their homes. On the ninth day of Chinese New Year, the Hokkiens (a Chinese dialect group) will pray to the God of Heaven with altars decorated with fruit, desserts and sugar cane. Fireworks, especially firecrackers, are lit to chase away evil spirits. 7
EDUCATION Teluk Kandis does not have any kindergartens or primary schools. Children either travel daily to the primary schools in nearby villages, or stay in rented rooms in these villages. The latter will return to Teluk Kandis on weekends. This situation is costly for parents, time consuming and causes great inconvenience. Villagers would certainly benefit from the establishment of a primary school within Teluk Kandis. The only secondary school in Teluk Kandis is SMK Salor. It is located on land owned by Tuan Haji Said. This school started in 1965 with only 3 classes, 79 students, and 7 teachers. After 2 years, the school built 2 new blocks of classrooms and a canteen. This school is financed by the Government. The PIBG also sponsors development of some facilities. 8

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES Klinik Desa Saloh is a government clinic located in Teluk Kandis. It is a small clinic which deals with minor ailments. For more serious or complicated medical cases, villagers have to be transported to hospital in nearby towns. Klinik Desa Saloh is the only clinic in the village. Teluk Kandis does not have a police station, fire station, post office or other public amenities. The roads are poorly maintained and have many potholes. The drains are clogged with rubbish- a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The poor drainage system leads to flooding when it rains. The villagers would certainly benefit from improvements in its drainage system, road condition and access to public amenities. Salor desa clinic which is the nearest to Teluk Kandis 10

PROBLEMS The main problems faced by the village are as follows: 1. No primary school in the village. It is costly for parents to rents rooms for their children who study in nearby villagers. It is also very inconvenient for those who travel daily to and from school. 2. Poor road conditions 3. Poor drainage system which causes great inconvenience and leads to health hazards. 12

RECOMMENDATIONS In view of the problems faced by Teluk Kandis villagers, the following matters need to be looked into. 1. Establishment of a primary school within the village or provision of inexpensive public transport to ferry students to and from schools in nearby villages. 2. Improvements in the drainage system to reduce flooding. Better garbage collection system and/or education on the consequences of littering. 3. Better access- perhaps via public transport- to post offices, hospitals and other public facilities in nearby towns.
