1 September, 2018 Bulletin 48 Keynote speech in honor of Dr. Leopoldo Zea On August 14 th, Faviola Rivera Castro, Ph.D., of the Institute for Philosophical Investigations of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (unam), gave a keynote lecture titled The Latin American Philosophy of Leopoldo Zea at the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History (paigh). The event was organized especially for diplomatic corps accredited in Mexico. Through a historical voyage through Leopoldo Zea s legacy, the philosopher explained his principal contributions to Latin American thought. The axis of Dr. Rivera Castro s presentation was Dr. Zea s trajectory as a founder of institutions, among which are the History of the Ideas in America Seminar, the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature at the unam, the College of Latin American Studies, and the Coordinator and Broadcaster of the Latin American Studies Center now known as the Research on Latin America and the Caribbean Center both at the same University. Following the presentation, César Rodríguez Tomeo, General Secretary of the PAIGH, described the history of the Institute and explained its functions to the diplomatic corps representants who were present. Subsequently, Dr. Patricia Galeana, the President of the History Commission, presented the Call for the 2019 American Thinkers Leopoldo Zea Prize, which will be open until December of the current year. In her speech, she quoted Zea s words, indicating that: If there is something that defines man,

2 History Commission Pan American Institute of Geography and History it is history; history gives meaning to what is done, to what is being done, and to what could be done. In the triple historical dimension, past, present and future, the being of man becomes evident. The President of the History Commission remembered the acknowledgments that the Latin American philosopher received throughout his life, because of his work tirelessly awakening Latin American awareness and the recognition of the region in the world. A dozen governments awarded him prizes, four European and four Latin American, as did eight universities in six countries on three continents. From America: Peru; Venezuela gave him the Andrés Bello Order and the Liberator Order of the Grand Officer degree. Brazil granted him the Latin American Memorial and the Río Branco Order and its Grand Officer Degree. In 2000, Mexico conferred him with the maximum recognition granted by the Senate of the Republic: The Belisario Domínguez Medal. He also twice received the Gabriela Mistral Prize from the Organization of American States. The ceremony finished with the explanation of the exhibition of iconic pieces belonging to the José Toribio Medina Reserve Fund of the Bibliographic Collection of the paigh. From the left to the right: Dr. Faviola Rivera Castro; Dr. Patricia Galeana, President of the History Commission, and César Rodríguez Tomeo, PAIGH s General Secretary. 2
