Immigration implies voluntary movement, and these now- Americans were captured, sold, endured the Middle Passage, treated brutally and deemed 3/5 of a person in our country. Through out our history, African Americans have fought for their rights and been a major force in our country. Their legacy continues to impact every area of our collective lives today.

Scholars estimate they lived here for the past 12,000 years. When the first Europeans arrived less than 400 years ago, there were more than 10 million Native people already living in the area that would become the US. The arrival of the Europeans and subsequent US policies brought disease, war, forced relocation, boarding school, and loss of their land, language and families. Despite this devastating history, Native Americans have fought for their rights and today there are 562 Sovereign Nations they govern themselves, manage their property and regulate business. They are an integral force and voice in our national conversation.
