4 After WWI! Some resented the fact that while they were in Europe fighting, some industrialists had become rich! One major problem in 1919 was inflation
5 After WWI! During the War prices of food, and clothing had increased dramatically! Wages had gone up, but not enough to keep up with rising prices of living

7 After WWI! In 1919 there was also no employment insurance! No compensation for injuries on the job
8 After WWI! In 1919 there was also no pensions! Thousands of people joined unions to fight for better working conditions! Labour laws at this time did not compel employers to bargain with representatives
9 After WWI! In many cases there was only one way for workers to make their demands heard

12 One Big Union! In 1917, a small group of radicals called Bolsheviks overthrew the government in a violent revolution! The Bolsheviks called for a revolution of the working people around the world
13 One Big Union! Believed that everyone in the community should own and control the way goods are produced and distributed! Some union leaders and working people in Canada were influenced by these ideas

18 Winnipeg General Strike! The BMTC asked for the support of other workers in Winnipeg! On May 15, additional workers in the city walked off the job! The strike spread from industry to industry

20 Winnipeg General Strike! Winnipeg was split into two hostile sides
21 Winnipeg General Strike! Officials were determined to crush the strike! The Winnipeg Citizen accused the strikers of trying to bring about a revolution! Canadian government became alarmed and changed the criminal code.
22 Winnipeg General Strike! Any foreign born person who was suspected of trying to cause a revolution could be arrested and deported without a hearing or trial! Ottawa also sent troops with machine guns! As the strike went on into June, the strikers experienced real hardship (no strike pay)
23 Winnipeg General Strike! Then on June 17, Mounties raided the homes of union leaders and labour headquarters! 10 strike leaders were arrested! The general strike went on for 37 days, and then on June 21, a day known as Bloody Saturday, violence erupted
24 Winnipeg General Strike! A huge crowd had gathered to watch a parade protesting the arrest of the strike leaders! Parades had been banned and they mayor, fearing trouble, read the riot act and called in the Mounted Police
25 Winnipeg General Strike The Riot Act His majesty the king charges and commands all persons being assembled immediately to disperse peacefully depart to their habitation or their lawful business upon pain of being guilty of an offence for which upon conviction they may be sentenced to imprisonment for life

27 Winnipeg General Strike! 5 days later the Central Strike Committee ordered the workers back to their jobs! The strike was over
28 Results of the Strike! To many the strike looked like a failure! Leaders arrested! Families savings gone! Forced to sign yellow dog contracts stating they would not join a union! Some had no jobs to go back to
29 Results of the Strike! Positive! Citizens began to appreciate how important workers were to the community! Drew attention to the social and economic problems faced by many working people
