3 Guiding Core Purpose To Encourage and Stimulate Interest in the Art and Science of Horology for the Benefit of the Public and NAWCC Members. Long-Range Vision To be the Global Leader in the Pursuit of the Art and Science of Time and Timekeeping. Letter from the Editor Longtime writer, staffer leaving; new member on board Greetings, members! Since I began working at the Association in May, you have seen changes in the Watch & Clock Bulletin and Mart & Highlights. Now we are seeing the loss of a prolific writer and a longtime staff member and welcoming a new member to the Publications Department. Bruce Shawkey (WI) has decided to stop contributing to the Wristwatches feature he started in October The winner of the James W. Gibbs Literary Award, he has covered a wide range of topics including little-known but historically significant wristwatch manufacturers and delve into the modern renaissance of wristwatches. His additional contributions include Vintage Wrist Watch Report, which contains original research and documentation about vintage wristwatches; Wristwatch News, the newsletter of the former Wristwatches Chapter; and Gruen Wristwatches: A Collector s Guide, a revised and much improved version of a 1993 book by Roy Erhardt. His work helped expand our appreciation and understanding as the voice of wristwatches. Amy L. Klinedinst (PA) who brought the artistic beauty and soul to the Watch & Clock Bulletin since March 1998 is leaving the Department to focus on her work in Tupperware. Since she started, Klinedinst has laid out more than 105 issues and worked with four editors. Her work did not stop with the Publications Department where she also helped produce several books, supplements, and marketing material, and organize the exhibits before Noel Poirier assumed the role of Museum director. During the past few years, Klinedinst has risen in the ranks of Tupperware, obtaining national recognition for her achievements, and we wish her continuing success and will miss her enthusiasm and dedication. New to the Department is Melissa A. Mann (PA) who is the NAWCC advertising services coordinator. She worked as an account manager for an airplane supplier and opened stores for a coffee chain in Tennessee. She also has served as an assistant promotions director at a local radio station. We are excited about the professionalism she has brought to this position. Thank you for your patience and support over the past year! Therese Umerlik About the Cover Don Bugh (TX) submitted this image titled Plenty of Time but No More Room! that showcases the shelves of the bench of an Indiana watchmaker and clockmaker. This photograph and another he took of the tower clock at the NAWCC Headquarters in Columbia, PA, were among more than 690 in the A Matter of Time contest. To see more photographs, turn to page 199. Errata In the article titled A Compilation of Clock Chimes & Sequences that appeared in the May/June 2015 issue of the Watch & Clock Bulletin, the Canterbury chimes score contained an incorrect note. For the third quarter sounded in the table on page 269, the notes are as follows: D-B-G-E-F # -A-G- B-E-A-D-F # -B-G-E-F # -A-D. The Watch & Clock Bulletin regrets the error. 5 Message from the Board Chair Dear Members, We are a wonderfully diverse organization. Our members interests include history, collecting, buying and selling, repairing, restoring, education, social contacts, traveling, Internet, and education. Our largest contributions to education come from the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia, PA, and nawcc.org. Over 95% of the visitors to the Museum are not members. Over 90% of the visitors to our websites are not members. Our contributions to these activities are consistent with our classification by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit. This allows contributions and a portion of your membership to be tax deductible, avoids taxes on our Association, and allows us to seek grants from foundations and governments. About 65% of our income is from individual memberships, 3% from businesses, 9% from the Museum, 3% from the National Convention, 8% from advertising, 5% from workshops, and 6% from individual donations and contributions. Thank goodness there are members who believe in our objectives and give to support us. Of course we should make more from our National Convention; most organizations do. Your Board is searching for more benefits that we can provide with the existing staff and increase revenue. As you may have noted we also try to reduce costs. For example, we cut the Library Archivist position to half time, but we have concluded that because of collections that need to be cataloged and research questions that need to be answered, it had to be reinstated to full time. We will continue to work on innovative ways to reduce costs and will depend on feedback if we go too far. Over 5,000 members attend 21 Chapter Regionals from which National receives only occasional contributions to support our expenses in support of this activity. Our education program pays for itself due to instructors who contribute their time or charge a fraction of their normal fees. As you can see we are very dependent on members who donate their time, dollars, or both to continue our programs. We do not recognize them as much or as often as we should. If we did not have this support, we must ask for a higher membership fee. Of course it would be better if we had more members. In the past we have recruited new members primarily through the Internet. We are trying to start programs to present ourselves in new venues by attending the shows of other societies and by direct mailings. I wish to thank all those who voluntarily donate time or money to our organization; we would be very ineffective if you did not. Chair Philip C. Gregory NAWCC Board of Directors pgregory@flash.net 196 May/June 2016 NAWCC Watch & Clock Bulletin Message from the Executive Director Dear Members, I want to highlight several items that are published in either the May/June 2016 issues of the Watch & Clock Bulletin or the Mart & Highlights. First is the Call for Nominations for the 2017 election of directors for the NAWCC Board and the election of a member to the Nominating and Elections Committee. Leadership, whether at the National level, Regional level, or Chapter level, is critical to maintaining a strong and vibrant NAWCC. If you have leadership qualities, a desire to see the NAWCC flourish, and time to commit, I strongly encourage you to help make a difference at some level. If you have an interest in the NAWCC at the National level, you will find qualifications and a nomination form in your publications. We will be electing four directors in 2017 to serve from 2017 to Two directors also will be appointed by the Board. Second are the NAWCC s finances. The 2017 fiscal year budget for April 2016 to March 2017 passed by the Board in November included a shortfall or deficit of $56,249 with the proviso that the staff was to work at reducing the shortfall. In the six months since the budget s passage, adjustments have allowed projections for income and expenses to reduce the projected shortfall to approximately $15,000. We will continue to seek additional income and reduced expenses to bring the budget into balance by the March 31, 2017, yearend. At the time of this writing, it appears that the FY16 budget that ended this March 31 will provide a several thousand dollar surplus. Third are two upcoming events that deserve your consideration. The National Convention from July in Louisville, KY, is shaping up to be an outstanding event. The theme of the convention is Unwinding on the River: Public Clocks of Every Shape and Excitement! On Wednesday there will be a trip on the Belle of Louisville, an authentic 1914 riverboat. Other event features include the Craft Competition and workshops. October 6-8 will be the Ward Francillon Time Symposium at the Winterthur Museum near Wilmington, DE. Winterthur, the former home of Henry Francis du Pont, has an outstanding horological collection that will be the basis for the Symposium. The Symposium has scheduled an exceptional group of speakers and will culminate with a banquet at the exclusive and prestigious Wilmington Country Club. Register for these events today to ensure your spot. Reserve your hotel room now because many nearby accommodations are at or near capacity. J. Steven Humphrey NAWCC Executive Director shumphrey@nawcc.org
