Steve Eaton, executive director of the Partnership for Children of Lincoln and Gaston Counties, was recently chosen to participate in the Smart Start Leaders' Collaborative, a statewide early childhood leadership program. Eaton is one of 12 Smart Start leaders from across the state chosen for the program. The initiative, funded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, will allow participants to plan for the future of North Carolina's early childhood system. For details about Smart Start, visit Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia was one of the first six hospitals in North Carolina to be recognized recently as recipients of the N.C. Maternity Center Breastfeeding-Friendly Designation. Hospitals receiving the designation are implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Gaston Memorial Hospital has received three stars. Maternity centers receive one star for every two steps implemented. The designation period is for three years, but maternity centers may reapply for a higher designation at any time. The Breastfeeding-Friendly designation is part of a statewide effort to support nursing mothers in their choice to breastfeed their children. For details, visit "A Conversation with Tommy Tomlinson," an interactive presentation with Observer columnist Tommy Tomlinson, has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in the auditorium at the Gaston County Public Library, Main Branch, 1555 E.
