1 CONFERENCE CONTRIBUTORS KEYNOTE ADDRESS Veronica Pedrosa Correspondent, Al Jazeera English The role of social media in contemporary conflicts Named Best News Anchor at the ninth Asian Television Awards, Veronica Pedrosa is a veteran of more than 20 years international news experience. She has lived and worked on three continents, and has made significant contributions to the world s best-known news broadcasters. Veronica has built up a reputation as one of the world s most recognizable Asian journalists and is currently based in Bangkok as a correspondent for Al Jazeera English. She is part of the team that launched Al Jazeera in 2006, which has since won international praise for its distinctive high-quality journalism from a developing world perspective. AUSTRALIA Peter Cave Foreign Affairs Editor, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) The Australian Safety Code for Journalists A five-time winner of Australian journalism s most prestigious accolade, the Walkley Award, Peter Cave has reported from more than 60 countries during a 40-year career with the ABC. In his current roving role, he provides reporting and analysis of stories across the globe. Since his first posting to Japan in the early 1980s, Mr. Cave has been chief correspondent for Europe and the Middle East, bureau chief in Washington, and the presenter of AM, ABC Radio s flagship morning current affairs program. His extensive experience includes covering conflict-related issues in Libya, South Africa, Vanuatu, Palestine and the former Soviet Union, and awardwinning coverage of Tiananmen Square in 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall. CHINA Duan Congcong Senior Editor, Global Times Duan Congcong reports on international issues and foreign affairs for Global Times, a Chinese daily newspaper focusing on international news with a daily circulation of 1.5 million. An experienced journalist, she has reported from India, South Korea, and Singapore and also covers the annual China People s Congress meeting. Ms. Congcong has travelled to Tibet and Xinjiang province to write features about these two areas of China. Yu Zheng Senior Editor, Xinhua News Agency The challenges of war reporting in North Korea and the Middle East Yu Zheng is a producer, editor and columnist for Xinhua News Agency, covering news and analysis, investigative stories, and commentaries for its global wire service. A leading Chinese science and environment journalist, he contributes to the Washingtonbased Discovery Channel News and Beijing-based Economic Observer. A recipient of several journalism fellowships and awards, Yu Zheng received a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and international relations from the China School of Journalism and a Master of Arts in international law and international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He joined NHK as a news reporter after college and has since served as bureau chief in Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Washington, covering major news events including the reversion of Hong Kong to China and US Presidential elections. Previously the anchor of the NHK Evening News and its satellite channel s world news programs, he later served in New York as the Director General of NHK s operations in the America region and returned to Japan as the Executive Controller General from 2007 to Yoshinori Fukushima Deputy Foreign News Editor, Mainichi Shimbun Yoshinori Fukushima began his career at Mainichi Shimbun newspaper in 1986 as a staff writer. He moved to Mainichi s foreign news department in 1990, covering the Gulf War and eventually both political and foreign news. He has previously served as bureau chief in Jerusalem, Paris and Brussels, covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and issues related to Afghanistan and Iraq during his postings. INDONESIA Yuli Ismartono Deputy Chief Editor, Tempo (English edition) Independence in reporting violence and disaster Along with her role at Tempo, Yuli Ismartono is the Managing Editor of AsiaViews, a monthly regional magazine. In her three decades in journalism and media relations, she has covered the First Gulf War and the conflicts in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Cambodia, and interviewed several Asian leaders. Ms. Ismartono is a member of the Alliance of Independent Journalists, the Jakarta Editors Club, the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand and the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club. An Eisenhower fellow, she completed undergraduate studies in political science in New Delhi, India, and graduate studies in journalism in Syracuse, New York, USA. Zulfiani Uni Lubis Chief Editor, ANTV Covering children, from privacy to violence issues In addition to being Chief Editor of private broadcaster ANTV, Zulfiani Lubis is a member of the Indonesian Press Council representing the media industry, and Executive Chairwoman of the Association of Indonesian Private Television Stations. She started her career as a reporter, then editor, at Warta Ekonomi. At age 32, Uni became the Chief Editor of Panji Masyarakat magazine and later Deputy Chief Editor at TV7 before joining ANTV. Uni is also Coordinator of the Editors Club, an informal club of executives and senior journalists of 50 media agencies in Indonesia. She has participated in the US-based Jefferson Fellowship Program of the East-West Center and the Eisenhower Fellow Multi National Program. Eddy Suprapto Channel Production News Head, MNC Business Protection and safety of journalists Eddy Suprapto is the Channel Production News Head of MNC Business and concurrently the Vice President of the Asian Journalist Association in Seoul. He was formerly a News Executive Producer of TPI Channel and editor of KONTAN business bulletin. Mr. Suprapto has conducted research for Secretariat For Preservation of Indonesian Rainforest and ELSAM Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy. 3 MALAYSIA Zainon Ahmad Consultant Editor, The Sun Daily The role of media in protecting migrants Zainon Ahmad is Consultant Editor as well as Political Editor of The Sun newspaper. He was assistant group editor of New Straits Times before he joined the Sun as its Editor-in- Chief in He studied history and international relations at the University of Malaya and was a teacher before starting a journalism career 35 years ago. He studied newspaper management at the Thomson Foundation, London, and was a fellow at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Boston, USA. Besides editing and writing, he also conducts training for young journalists in Malaysia and abroad. Mokhtar Hussain Chief Editor, National News Agency (Bernama) Mokhtar Hussain joined Bernama, the Malaysian National News Agency in 1984 after graduating with a bachelor s degree in Mass Communications from the National University of Malaysia. He also holds a degree in Jurisprudence from University of Malaya. Prior to his appointment as an Editor, he had served as bureau chief in Sabah and Head of Audio Visual Unit (now Bernama TV). He is the president of the National Press Club, Malaysia. Kamarul Bahrin Bin Haron Executive Editor, Astro Awani Kamarul rose the ranks at Astro Awani, Malaysia s first 24 hournews channel, from producer in 2008 to its current Executive Editor and anchor of Sudut Pandang, Vantage Point and Analisis Awani. He was previously a TV3 producer, anchor at RBS, and a New Straits Times journalist. He has interviewed more than a dozen Nobel laureates, heads of states, and other global newsmakers. Kamarul is also known for his unique editorial approach presenting the 12th Malaysian general elections in NEW ZEALAND Mike McRoberts Anchor, 3News and 60 Minutes, TV3 Experiences from the field: a foreign correspondent in Thailand In a career spanning more than 25 years, Mike McRoberts is best known for his reporting from some of the world s most dangerous places, from the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq to Lebanon, Gaza, the Solomon Islands and East Timor. Mike has also covered some of the world s worst disasters such as the earthquakes in Pakistan, China and Haiti, and this year in his hometown of Christchurch. After 10 years as a Radio New Zealand reporter, Mike moved to Auckland to work with Television New Zealand, reporting for One News and the daily current affairs Holmes programme. In 2001, Mike moved to TV3 where he now anchors its flagship news and current affairs shows. He is a multiple award winner, including 2006 New Zealand journalist of the year. In recent years, he has served as a judge for the News and Current Affairs category of the Emmy Awards. PHILIPPINES Carolyn Arguillas News Editor, MindaNews and Editor in Chief, OUR Mindanao Role of media in covering victims of armed conflict: the Mindanao experience A multiple journalism award winner, Carolyn Arguillas is a founder of the Mindanao News and Information Cooperative Center (MNICC), established in 2001 by Mindanaobased journalists previously working for national news outlets. This year, Ms. Arguillas received the Hildegarde Award for Journalism (St. Scholastica s College in Manila); the Investigative Reporter of the Year (Rotary Club of Manila); and was named the McLuhan Fellow (Canadian Embassy and Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility). She is presently completing her thesis for an MA in Peace and Development at the Notre Dame University in Cotabato City. Red Batario Regional Coordinator for Asia-Pacific, International News Safety Institute (INSI) Moderator Red Batario is a Regional Coordinator for INSI, a global media network dedicated to the safety of journalists and media staff. He is also the President and Executive Director of the non-profit Center for Community Journalism and Development, which provides a platform for dialogue between local news media and citizens on issues affecting their communities. He has spent most of his career as a newspaper or TV journalist, with some of his works cited for excellence by the JVO Awards for Investigative Journalism. He regularly conducts public journalism seminars as well as hostile environment and first-aid training in the Philippines and other Asian countries. Cherry Ann Lim Managing Editor (Special Pages and Features), Sun.Star Cebu Cebu Declaration and other initiatives to improve media safety Cherry Ann Lim is managing editor and former business editor of Sun.Star Cebu, a member of Sun.Star Publications Network, the largest network of community newspapers in the Philippines. Ms. Lim also serves as Assistant Executive Director of the Cebu Citizens- Press Council, an organization working on media issues and promoting professional journalism. She has co-produced short films on issues affecting the press, and worked with the Cebu Media Legal Aid to defend the rights of journalists. Her work in journalism has been recognized by the Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Excellence in Journalism, Philippine Press Institute, Council for the Welfare of Children, Philippine Legislators Committee on Population and Development Foundation Inc., and the Catholic Mass Media Awards. A novelist, Lim also edits The Cebu Yearbook and Cebu Journalism and Journalists magazine. Ledrolen Manriquez Chief of Operations, The Peace and Conflict Journalism Network- PECOJON Philippines Ledrolen Len Manriquez is a founding member of PECOJON (established in 2004) and is in charge of managing the network. Her expertise also extends to co-facilitating trainings on conflict-sensitivejournalism as well facilitating trainings on creative conflict transformation and crisis management. With a degree in Mathematics, she took a study program on Conflict and Reconciliation in 2006 and later an IIJ summer course on Media Freedom and Responsibility in Hamburg, Germany. She is currently enrolled in a post-graduate course on International Humanitarian Law (University of Hyderabad in India). She continues to coordinate the Philippine network, designs its programs and administers its projects while managing the operations of PECOJON International, which has a presence in Timor Leste, Cambodia, Indonesia and Germany. Isagani Yambot Publisher, Philippine Daily Inquirer Media responsibilities in reporting on emergencies: Is self-regulation enough? Isagani Yambot began his career in journalism as a deskperson at the pre-martial law Manila Times in Except for brief stints as a foreign service press attaché, he has been in journalism all his life. Before joining the Inquirer in 1989 as Executive Editor, Mr. Yambot worked as Night Editor of United Press International, managing editor of the Times Journal, and later, of Malaya. He was designated Associate Publisher of the Inquirer in 1991 and has been its Publisher since He is currently treasurer of the Philippine Press Institute, the national association of newspapers, 14 October 2011 Manila, Philippines 9

5 and represents Inquirer in the International Press Institute. Mr. Yambot has received recognition from the College Editors Guild Alumni Association; Alpha Beta Fraternity of the University of the Philippines; Catholic Mass Media Awards; Tondo Rotary Club; and the City of Manila. He studied liberal arts at the University of the Philippines, and was a Fall Fellow of the Washington Journalism Center in SOUTH KOREA Cho Il Joon Head of International News team and staff writer, The Hankyoreh A journalist for 16 years in Korea, Mr. Cho Il Joon has worked at The Hankyoreh since At this independent and progressive daily newspaper, he has previously worked as a writer on the culture team and economy team as well as manager of the opinion. Currently a staff writer on the international news team, he recently reported on the Egyptian Revolution from Cairo and has previously covered the situation in Israel, Palestine and Iran. In 2009, he covered the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall from Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. THAILAND Pinpaka Ngamsom News Editor, Prachatai.com The Roles of Online Media in Thailand s May 2011 Crackdown: Advantages and Obstacles Pinpaka Ngamsom is the News Editor of Prachatai.com, an online news website founded in She was co-author of the book Online Media: Born to be Democracy, which compiled interviews and discussion on the role of new media in politics. Pinpaka has a law degree from Thammasat University, Thailand and a Masters in Inter-Asia NGOs Studies from Sungkonghoe University, South Korea. Ms. Ngamsom s interests are in freedom of expression and minority-rights issues. Don Pathan Foreign News Desk Editor, The Nation Covering yourself when covering dangerous assignments: a case of reporting conflicts in Myanmar and Thailand s Deep South Don Pathan is an American journalist and consultant on the conflict in Southern Thailand for international organizations. He is based in Bangkok and Yala, one of Thailand s three southernmost provinces affected by ongoing violence since Beside Thailand s Malay-speaking South, Pathan also writes on Southeast Asia s Golden Triangle. Pathan graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1993 with a BA in History and minored in Middle East Studies. Thin Lei Win South East and East Asia Correspondent, Reuters AlertNet Social Media, Beneficiary Communications and Humanitarian Reporting Thin Lei Win joined AlertNet in June 2008, becoming the first AlertNet journalist to be based in Asia. Prior to joining AlertNet, Thin worked at trade publications in Singapore and as a freelance writer in Vietnam. She has a Masters in Multi-Media Journalism from Bournemouth University.
