14 Twin Valley Community Local School District Maintenance & Transportation Monthly Report By: Lee V. Myers III September 26, 2011 Building/Grounds: 1) Summer roof and window repairs were completed by Becker Roofing on Thursday, August 18th. Numerous windows required re-caulking and several previously identified roof seams were repaired. Inspections for expansion joint re-caulks will begin in September as we prepare for colder weather. 2) New red plastic lettering has been ordered for replacement on the West side of our complex. Seventy-four letters were ordered to replace the existing stucco-covered letters that have failed in recent years. 3) HS GYM: A defective drive transmission and motor were replaced on Friday, Sept. 9 th on the NE section of the bleachers. Once installed final adjustments were made to coordinate all three drive units. Secondly, a quote from Farnham to weld additional seat supports, replace missing hardware and replace damaged boards is scheduled to take place within the next 4-5 weeks before basketball season. 4) Recently bees have been discovered building a nest inside the Media Center above the false ceiling. A plan to remove the bees was started on Monday, Sept. 12 th and then re-seal their entry point when completed. 5) Our quarterly PM for Twin Valley s HVAC system was scheduled for the week of Monday, Sept. 19 th. Prior to that Waibel was called in for repairs to our domestic hot water equipment. 6) New backboard bumper pads are currently being installed on all 6 units in the HS gymnasium. 7) Waibel Energy just completed their quarterly HVAC Inspections, repairs and adjustments of our system. New AHU filters have been delivered and will be installed. The Boilers were inspected for proper operation before the colder months arrive. Transportation: 1) Our newest used bus purchase (Bus #12) was inspected by the OSP on Friday, August 19 th and approved for transporting students. The required paperwork was sent on to Columbus for an issuance of our state ID number. 2) Nine of the recently removed gymnasium lights were installed as replacements in the Bus Garage. A noticeable difference in brightness was immediate and should help our maintenance staff with bus repairs. 3) Bus #8 was recently repaired at Long s for transmission shifting problems and placed back into our spare bus fleet. Once returned we shipped bus #10 out to Long s for what we believe is a rear main oil seal leak. We hope to have it back into service very soon. 4) A minor rear end incident involving one of our buses (#2) and our trainer occurred in Lewisburg while on the way to Ansonia for our football game. Minimal damage was noted to the school bus but more extensive damages were reported to the other vehicle. Upon arrival at the game a report was generated by the Darke Co. Sheriff s office and the OSP for follow-up. Date: 9/23/2011 Agenda Page: 14 of 38
15 Twin Valley Schools September 2011 Transportation Newsletter 2010 Ohio Statistics September 21, 2011 At a recent State of Ohio Transportation meeting hosted by Pete Japiske the following statistics were provided as a summary of items that occurred during fiscal year While some are staggering others show some improvement from previous years when compared. Each day school buses in the state of Ohio travel over 1,000,000 miles transporting students safely to and from school. Accident Statistic Review Calendar year Accidents with School Buses Involved Accident Rate per 100,000 miles Who was in error in 2010? The school bus driver was in 44% of the accidents (750 of the 1579). Some of the At Fault details for those accidents include: 20 buses struck a fixed object, 17 struck a utility pole, 11 stuck a mailbox, 22 Ran off of the road, 187 struck a parked vehicle and 433 buses were cited for a moving error. Possible training might include ensuring proper mirror adjustment, drive attentiveness, proper driver depth perception, enhanced driver skills testing, knowing and watching for a stale green light, driver observation of parked cars when steering wheels are turned out and having the ability to always look for a way out in your everyday driving maneuvers. Cross road cross checks and frequent mirror observation are but a few ways to increase driver and student safety. Times have changed over the past several years as you well recognize. Back in 2000 Ohio funded over 40 million dollars for bus purchasing yet 11 years later the State of Ohio provides NO FUNDING for new school bus purchases and many districts like ours are forced to look at purchasing good used buses to keep their fleet up-to-date. We will continue to look for ways to reduce costs, put more kids in bus seats meaning fuller buses, route our buses more effectively for fuel savings but ultimately provide our students with the safest mode of transportation to and from school each day. The following attached page (see Transportation Webpage under Newsletters ) taken from a national school transportation magazine gets us thinking about winter preparedness for our buses, road hazards and those cold mornings when it seems very hard to get ourselves motivated let alone our school buses. Several changes are being implemented with heater hook-ups this winter and when finalized a diagram will be provided on where our fleet will park nightly to hook-up.
