Curse Descritin: This secnd part f a tw quarter sequence fcuses n the natin's ecnmic develpment frm a predminantly agricultural ecnmy t the leading industrial ecnmy in the wrld, and the mre recent changes in the age f infrmatin and 'glbalizatin.' The emphasis will lie n the histrical lgic f the ecnmic grwth prcess, as well as the scial and plitical tensins that accmpanied ecnmic expansin in the U.S. The class will fster an understanding f the rles private business, labr, and the state played in American ecnmic grwth and decline, and illustrate the cnnectins between science & technlgy, plitics, scial change and ecnmic change. The class will emphasize the meaning f ecnmic life as a histry nt f things, but f peple. Traditinally crss-listed in histry and ecnmics, the curse ffers ecnmics students a rare insight int histrical experiences that underlie their subject. Histry students will experience a systematic apprach t the ecnmic prcesses s central t understanding the diversity f American life. Hwever, students d NOT require any previus curse wrk in ecnmics r statistics. Curse Reauirements: The lectures will cmplement rather than duplicate the readings. Regular attendance will be crucial fr the successful cmpletin f the curse. While this is predminantly a lecture curse, there will be time fr discussin. 1

2 _ Students will have t shw a gd faith effrt in ALL three requirements: 1. A midterm wrth 30 percent f the curse grade cnsisting f multiple chice questins and shrt I.D.s, 2. A three hur final exam wrth 40 percent f the curse grade cnsisting f multiple chice questins, shrt I.D.s, and tw essay questins. 3. A chice f either f the fllwing, wrth 30 percent: a.) Regular attendance and participatin in ne f the fur discussin sectins ffered by the Teaching Assistants. b.) A 10 page review essay n tw t three bks chsen with the help and cnsent fthe instructr. Make-up exams will nt be ffered, unless there are extrardinary circumstances such as medical difficulties r family emergencies. Curse Material: Next t attending lecture, keeping up with the assigned readings is the mst imprtant step twards a successful cmpletin f the curse.
