Lesson Objective Explain how the Industrial Revolution led to political, economic, and social changes in Europe

Lesson Objective Explain how the Industrial Revolution led to political, economic, and social changes in Europe 1. What are we learning? Rewrite the LO into a question. How would How will How might Why would Why will Why might

Lesson Objective 2. Why is it important/making a connection? There have been many protests in the United States in the last few weeks: The Women s March, the March for Life, LGBTQ Marches, Anti-Trump protests, etc. Would you ever participate in a protest? What are the issues that are the most important to you? During the Industrial Revolution, urbanization created problems for people living and working in cities across the world. Political changes led to improved conditions for these people. Ex:

Word Wall Vocabulary: Unions organizations that protect the rights of the worker

What is the Industrial Revolution? The Industrial Revolution is a major shift in world history. Before the Industrial Revolution, most people worked in agriculture (farming) and lived in the country. During and after the Industrial Revolution, most people worked in manufacturing (factories) and lived in the city.

Political Changes During the Industrial Revolution Municipal (city) reforms made cities cleaner and more healthful places to live Quality of drinking water improved Introduced sewers Street lamps and police forces made cities safer Governments introduced the first free public elementary schools (Horace Mann) How might these changes improve the life of workers during the Industrial Revolution?

Political Changes During the Industrial Revolution Some workers organized into unions and threatened to strike (refuse to work) if they did not obtain higher wages and better conditions. How might a strike hurt the workers?

Political Changes During the Industrial Revolution A new economic class emerged during the Industrial Revolution called the middle class *. In 1832, Parliament gave the middle class the right to vote with the Reform Bill of Eventually, workers were also allowed to vote, but women were not. Why might other countries refuse to allow women to vote?

Guided Practice: Reform Bill of 1832 With a partner, write a short speech (at least ten sentences) in favor of or against the Reform Bill of When the timer goes off, read your speech to another set of partners.

Re-Learning Opportunity What is the Industrial Revolution? What political changes took place during the Industrial Revolution? If you can answer these questions, you may move on to independent practice. If you cannot answer these questions, you will complete the re-learning activity.

Independent Practice: BLANK SHEET Pick up a copy of Responses to the Industrial Revolution Read through the documents and answer the questions. Using the documents, write an essay that answers the prompt: How were the evils of the Industrial Revolution address in England in the eighteenth century? Re-Learners: Pick up a copy of Industrialization: Manchester Case Study and complete the true/false sentences. Then, write a paragraph explaining the political (government) responses to poor living and working conditions during the Industrial Revolution (aka, how did the government fix those problems?).
