6 Word Wall Vocabulary: Militarism: military values and goals take over civilian society; countries build up their arsenals Alliance system: relationships between countries Imperialism: one (strong) country taking over a another (weak) country s economy and government, usually to exploit resources Nationalism: devotion or love for one s country Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy Triple Entente: Britain, France, and Russia

7 What World War I? Originally called The Great War because no other war had this many countries involved Between the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente Began in an area of the world called the Balkans the powder keg of Europe Four causes: MAIN Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism

10 What is Militarism? Militarism is glorifying military power and keeping an army prepared for war Kings wore military uniforms even in daily life, and generals became powerful political figures Germany and Britain competed to build the largest navy

11 Turn and Talk Look at the graph. What might happen if one country sees another increasing their military spending? ANS: They will likely increase their spending as well Defense Estimates of the Great Powers, (in millions of pounds) Germany Austria-Hungary France Great Britain Italy Russia

12 What are Alliances? By 1914, Europe was divided into two large alliances Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the Triple Alliance (Central Powers) Great Britain, France, and Russia formed the Triple Entente (Allied Powers) The purpose of these alliances was to preserve the balance of power in Europe

13 Turn and Talk Why might the alliance system lead to a largescale war? ANS: Because if one person is involved, their allies must also become involved

15 What is Imperialism? Imperialism is when one country takes political and economic control over another country The weaker country is called a colony

16 What is Imperialism? Many European powers believed the sign of a great power was possession of overseas colonies Competing for land created an environment of tension

17 Turn and Talk Why might imperialism lead to war? ANS: Because if colonies represent strength, the more colonies you have, the stronger you are. European countries will fight over their colonies to have more than the other

18 What is Nationalism? Nationalism is extreme devotion or love for one s country Nationalism can unify a country but it can also create rivalries between other countries

19 What is Nationalism? Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Italy, Great Britain, and France were all rivals by the beginning of the 1900s This rivalry came as a result of competition for materials, territorial disputes, and ethnic groups asking for independence

24 Fun Fact The first would-be assassin threw his bomb at the Archduke s car. It bounced off the hood and under the car behind them The assassin tried to escape by jumping in to the river below and biting a cyanide capsule Since it was June, there was no water and the cyanide capsule was not strong enough, so the assassin started vomiting while a crowd following him into the foot deep water and began beating him up
