The civilians are safely recovered and a long hostage crisis averted, but many Marines die. The action was to signal U.S. resolve despite defeat in Vietnam, but hostages were already being freed. North Vietnam invades the South Congress refuses to authorize aid. Saigon renamed Ho Chi Minh city.
