1 GRADE 1 Content/Standard FIRST GRADE Every first grader should be able Identify family/household members and relate information about each member Name/describe the people in his/her immediate family Explain the relationships among family members such as: parent, child, father, mother, brother, sister, etc. Identify roles of adults and children in families. 1 Distinguish the characteristics of a family Discuss unique family customs Name/describe the people in extended families Tell about a special family custom or activity. Relate a special time the family shared together. Discuss how the family celebrates holidays or special occasions. Identify members of the extended family. Describe the special role of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other extended family.

GRADE 1 FIRST GRADE Every first grader should be able Characterize different types of houses and name the rooms in each Describe different types of jobs performed by people in their family Describe vehicles used for different professions. Distinguish single-family house and apartment building. Identify rooms in a home and explain use of each. Compare shelters of families from different parts of the world. Identify addresses on homes and give the address of their home. Describe different types of homes such as teepees, igloos, log cabin, etc. Define the word job. Identify the various jobs done by the members of the family at work and at home. Identify the s used in various occupations. 3 3 Describe the school family GRADE 1 FIRST GRADE Exhibit cooperation techniques by following rules and showing responsibility for actions Recognize classmates uniqueness through likenesses, differences, talents, and feelings Name/describe the jobs of the adults in the school. Every first grader should be able Identify and distinguish rules at home and at school. Explain why people need rules. Demonstrate the effect of what might happen when rules in various types of settings are not followed. (Field Trip, pool party, playground, school, etc.) Identify ways that people are alike and different. Identify their own likes, dislikes and talents, such as favorite pets, foods, clothing, games, toys, etc. Compare likes, dislikes, and talents with their classmates. Explain who Christopher Columbus was and what he did. Identify Martin Luther King, Jr. as a man who worked for fairness for people and explain why we celebrate a holiday in his name. Recognize the American flag and bald eagle as symbols for American values Recognize the American flag and other important symbols of our country. 5 GRADE 1 FIRST GRADE Recognize George Washington as the First President of the United States and his importance to America. Every first grader should be able Identify George Washington as the first president of the United States in List the contributions of George Washington as a general in the American Revolution. 5 Identify selected Presidents of the United States Recognize Abraham Lincoln as the Sixteenth President of the United States and his importance to America Recognize the current president of the United States and his job. Identify Abraham Lincoln as the 16 th President of the United States. Explain Abraham Lincoln s work as the President during the Civil War. Identify the President as the leader of our country. Name and identify the current President of the United States. Identify the roles of civic leaders. Explain that leaders are elected by the peoples vote. 5

6 6 Recognize our world and identify its resources GRADE 1 FIRST GRADE Recognize that earth is made up of land and water and locate both on a globe and map Identify the plants, fish, and other creatures that live in or near the water and people who live, work, or play near the water. Identify the woods as a home for wildlife as well as a provider of jobs, recreation activities, and products for people Identify ways to do his/her part to take care of the earth Identify the four seasons and describe the type of weather that usually comes during each season. Every first grader should be able Describe the differences between water and land. Compare different types of land formations. Describe and identify different bodies of water. Identify the human characteristics of landscapes. Identify things that live on land and things that live in the water. Describe animals found in or near the water. Describe activities carried out by people who live or work by the water. Describe the various types of trees found in the woods. Identify woodland creatures. List jobs which utilize the woods. Identify products that people use which come from the woods. Name ways we can recycle at home and at school Classify items as recyclable (e.g. paper, metal, plastic) or nonrecyclable. Identify ways people depend on and interact with physical environment. Identify ways the earth is being cared for and being neglected. Describe weather associated with each of the four seasons. 7 GRADE 1 FIRST GRADE Compare and contrast a map and a globe. Every first grader should be able Recognize a globe as a model of the earth. Compare a globe to a world map. Understand that a map is a picture of a real place as seen from above. 7 Use basic map skills Utilize cardinal directions on a map, north, south, east, west Recognize one s country, and one s state, and identify the people who live here as Americans. Identify directions on a map as north, south, east and west. Identify points on a map as being north, south, east or west. They share different traditions and treasures that are a part of a family s history. Every second grader should be able Recognize that every family has its own heritage. Give examples of family traditions Explore the diversity of people in the United States and identify and appreciate examples of various cultures within their own community. Define culture and explore the diversity of the United States. Compare and contrast people s work, interests and talents. Explain how new ideas and culture spread from one place to another when immigrants move, as well as, through the forms of communication systems. Identify cultural holidays celebrated in the community and the customs associated with them. Identify and explain expressions of culture in the community. GRADE 2 SECOND GRADE Recognize the difference between goods and services and goods come from many places in the community, state and beyond Recognize how resources are needed and used to create products Explore needs and wants. Discuss concepts of working to earn money to provide these. Every second grader should be able Distinguish between goods and services. Identify people who provide goods and services to the community. Recognize jobs associated with resources in a place. Explain that people from around the world and within our own country and community depend on one another through trade. Explain how people depend on the physical environment and its natural resources to satisfy their basic needs. List natural resources and give examples of their uses. Describe how natural resources affect activities Trace the development of a product from a natural resource to a finished product. Explain the difference between needs and wants. Explain how work provides income to purchase goods and services. Describe various means of exchange, such as money and barter. Discuss modern methods of payments for good and services. 9

10 GRADE 2 SECOND GRADE Identify how people work interdependently to benefit their community and solve community problems. Every second grader should be able Describe how government establishes order, provides security and manages conflict. Recognize laws in the community and the consequences of breaking them. 3 Demonstrate an understanding of how a government works to solve community problems. Identify characteristics of good citizenship such as a belief in justice, truth, equality, and responsibility for the common good. Describe their state government and identify its responsibilities Explore their local, state, and national government. Describe our national government and its responsibilities. Compare the roles of public officials, including mayor, governor, and President. 10

11 GRADE 2 SECOND GRADE Identify holidays celebrated by Americans of various ethnic, cultural, or racial groups. Every second grader should be able Describe ways people honor their heroes and where individuals are remembered in their community. Explain why we celebrate certain holidays, such as Columbus Day, President s Day, Veterans Day, etc. 4 Demonstrate an understanding of special Americans and holidays celebrated in our country Identify some famous Americans of various ethnic groups who have contributed to their community, state, or country (e.g. Benjamin Franklin, Daniel Boone, Clara Barton, Sojourner Truth, Sandra Day O Connor, and Grandma Moses) Explain the significance of various national celebrations. Identify contributions of historical figures who have influenced the community, state and nation. Identify and explain the significance of various community, state, and national memorials such as Mt. Rushmore and the Lincoln Memorial. Identify American heroes and explain their achievements. 11

GRADE 2 SECOND GRADE Identify the elements of a map and use them to create, interpret and read simple maps of local communities Describe the physical characteristics of landforms and water using maps and pictures Identify the uses of maps, globes and the various types of information found on maps. Every second grader should be able Use a compass rose and cardinal directions to find locations and determine directions on maps. Use a map key and its symbols to locate and identify points or areas on a map. Recognize that maps can be different sizes, define map scale and use scale to find real distances. Draw maps to show places and routes. Use maps to describe land and bodies of water. Identify and describe the physical characteristics of various landforms. Compare the features of different bodies of water. Use symbols, colors and labels on maps to identify different bodies of land and water. Use a globe to find the poles, the cardinal directions, and the equator. Identify major landforms and bodies of water, including continents and oceans on maps and globes. 12

13 GRADE 3 THIRD GRADE Review map and globe skills. Every third grader should be able Identify and locate places and regions such as: 7 continents, 4 oceans, equator, prime meridian, 4 hemispheres and the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west). Identify map and globe elements such as: latitude, longitude, map key, symbols, compass rose and title. List advantages of using a map and/or a globe. 1 The students will be able to understand how Physical Geography is a part of daily life Identify and recognize the diversity of geographical features in the United States. Classify maps based on their uses. (E.g. physical, political, product). Name characteristics of landforms found in the United States. (E.g. Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Great Plains, etc.). Identify geographic terms such as prairie, canyon, plateau, continent, river basin, ocean, etc. Identify a place in a region by it weather and climate Distinguish between weather and climate. Give a definition of weather and climate. Identify regions of the United States for its distinct climate: cold/wet, cold/dry, hot/dry, hot/wet. 13

Explain how a community develops and grows. Every third grader should be able Define the concept of a community. Identify reasons people form communities. Identify and explain similarities and differences among communities in different places. Explain how communities help people to meet their needs. Name places that people share in a community and explain how these places are shared. Identify and describe the features of a community that are recreational, local government, business and residential areas. Locate and describe the central business district of a city. Explain the role of citizens in a community. Describe ways people in a community share holidays and customs. Describe actions that change and improve a community. Explain how geographic features of a community affect its growth. Distinguish between natural resources, human resources, and capital resources and how they influence the growth of a community. GRADE 3 THIRD GRADE Identify farming areas as a rural community and distinguish between various types of farms Identify a city as an urban area and a suburb as a part of an urban area Describe living and working in a city and suburb. Every third grader should be able Distinguish between a town and a village as types of rural communities. Define a rural area. Recognize that location, climate, and natural resources determine the products that a rural community produces. Name and describe three different types of farms. Distinguish between a city and a town. Identify a suburb as a community located near a city. List common features that most suburbs share. Explain what is meant by the term urban communities. Demonstrate that major cities in our country are located near important natural resources that help them grow. Compare the ways people in communities meet their needs. Outline the similarities and differences between a large city and a small community. 15

GRADE 3 THIRD GRADE Define the term culture and give examples of a cultural aspect Identify Native Americans as the first people to live in North America and describe the culture of a Native American people Identify early Spanish settlements in North America and describe the influence of their culture on our country Identify the people of the Plymouth community and describe daily life in a pilgrim colony Every third grader should be able Explain what culture is. Describe ways in which people learn about their culture, such as through legends. Name some aspects of culture. Explain how natural resources have affected the way of life of the Plain Indians. Describe the landforms and climate of different Native American groups and how they affected their culture. Locate the places in the United States that the Spanish settled. Describe the oldest community, St. Augustine, in North America and its importance to the Spanish to protect trading routes. Evaluate how Spanish settlements have influenced American Culture. Describe how early colonists adapted to the land. Name the natural resources that made Plymouth a good place to build a community. Describe the interaction between the colonists and the native people. Recognize that cooperation among the colonists helped to bring the community together. 16

Every fourth grader should be able Explain how people may have come to North America from Asia. Describe the way of life of the Susquehannock and Leni Lenape cultures. Identify place names in that are of Native American origin. Identify and compare the location and cultures of five Native American groups that lived in (e.g. Delaware, Shawnee, Nanticoke, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, Susquehanna, Erie, Tuscarora). Analyze the reasons for European settlement in. Identify and describe early settlements in and the country of origin of the people who founded them. Explain how William Penn s personal beliefs affected how he set up and governed his colony. 19
