GCL is designed t meet the demand f university students thrugh an integrated lcal and internatinal service experience (Cambdia) embedded in academic learning. Curriculum will explre: Lcal and glbal citizenship Best-practice dmestic and internatinal develpment Assessment f cmmn humanitarian principles Leadership develpment Prject-management Advcacy Practical hands-n service This prgram invites and inspires participants t ask difficult and prbing questins abut what it means t be a respnsible citizen engaging in lcal and internatinal humanitarian effrts. GCL is firmly rted in Yuthlinc s missin f creating lifetime humanitarians. GCL will guide participants in an impactful directin, creating cmmunity leaders wh have a practical and academic understanding f the cmplexities f lcal and internatinal citizenship. GCL participants can pt t cmplete the prgram t receive cllege credit thrugh Utah State University r Utah State University Eastern. Requirements fr credit are listed in curse syllabus. GCL will partner Yuthlinc with freign NGOs t facilitate a meaningful practicum f experience in n-the-grund service and sustainability. GCL participants will have the ptin f extending their Yuthlinc GCL experience beynd the 2-week internatinal prtin t d extended internships with freign NGOs, pssibly fr additinal university credit (at their respective university s discretin). GCL will be facilitated by a Yuthlinc staff persn r experienced Yuthlinc Team Leader wh als hlds a Master s Degree.

Be a high schl graduate. 2. Be willing t cmplete all curriculum requirements utlined in the syllabus, whether yu are pting fr transcript credit r nt. 3. Attend mnthly sessins frm January thrugh May t engage in active learning AND practical planning f internatinal service prjects. Fr students in areas far frm Salt Lake City, Yuthlinc will facilitate these meetings via vide cnferencing and Canvas. 4. Engage in all scheduled activities abrad, including carrying ut cmmittee wrk, attending and participating in learning activities, attending all meetings with internatinal partners, and engaging in regular team debriefs and reflectins. 5. Cmplete all assignments, prjects, and prtfli items. Backgrund Infrmatin Cambdia is in Sutheastern Asia, brdering the Gulf f Thailand, between Thailand, Vietnam, and Las. The Khmer peple are descendants f the Angkr Empire which extended ver much f Sutheast Asia and reached its peak between the 10th and 13th centuries. Attacks by the Thai and Vietnamese weakened the empire, ushering in a lng perid f decline. The king placed the cuntry under French prtectin in 1863, and it became part f French Indchina in Fllwing Japanese ccupatin in Wrld War II, Cambdia gained full independence frm France in In April 1975, after a seven-year struggle, cmmunist Khmer Ruge frces captured Phnm Penh and evacuated all cities and twns. At least 1.5 millin Cambdians died frm executin, frced hardships, r starvatin during the Khmer Ruge regime under POL POT. A December 1978 Vietnamese invasin drve the Khmer Ruge int the cuntryside, began a 10-year Vietnamese ccupatin, and tuched ff almst 13 years f civil war. The 1991 Paris Peace Accrds mandated demcratic electins and a cease-fire, which was nt fully respected by the Khmer Ruge. UN-spnsred electins in 1993 helped restre sme semblance f nrmalcy. The remaining elements f the Khmer Ruge surrendered in early Sme f the surviving Khmer Ruge leaders have been tried r are awaiting trial fr crimes against humanity by a hybrid UN-Cambdian tribunal supprted by internatinal assistance. Mdern Cambdia has grwing turism, garment, cnstructin and real estate, and agriculture sectrs. Arund 600,000 peple, the majrity f whm are wmen, are emplyed in the garment and ftwear sectr. An additinal 500,000 Cambdians are emplyed in the turism sectr. Turism has cntinued t grw rapidly with freign arrivals exceeding 2 millin per year since 2007 and reaching arund 4.5 millin visitrs in Mining als is attracting sme investr interest and the gvernment has tuted pprtunities fr mining bauxite, gld, irn and gems. Cambdia remains ne f the prest cuntries in Asia and lng-term ecnmic develpment remains a daunting challenge, inhibited by endemic crruptin, limited human resurces, high incme inequality, and pr jb prspects. As f 2012, apprximately 2.66 millin peple live n less than $1.20 per day, and 37% f Cambdian

3 children under the age f 5 suffer frm chrnic malnutritin. Mre than 50% f the ppulatin is less than 25 years ld. The ppulatin lacks educatin and prductive skills, particularly in the impverished cuntryside, which als lacks basic infrastructure. Cambdia is a surce, transit, and destinatin cuntry fr men, wmen, and children subjected t frced labr and sex trafficking; Cambdian men, wmen, and children migrate t cuntries within the regin and, increasingly, the Middle East fr legitimate wrk but are subjected t sex trafficking, dmestic servitude, r frced labr in fishing, agriculture, cnstructin, and factries; Cambdian men recruited t wrk n Thai-wned fishing vessels are subsequently subjected t frced labr in internatinal waters and are kept at sea fr years; pr Cambdian children are vulnerable and, ften with the families cmplicity, are subject t frced labr, including dmestic servitude and frced begging; Cambdian and ethnic Vietnamese wmen and girls are trafficked frm rural areas t urban centers and turist spts fr sexual explitatin; Cambdian men are the main expliters f child prstitutes, but men frm ther Asian cuntries, and the West travel t Cambdia fr child sex turism. Overall Curse Objectives 1. Identify guiding principles f best-practice lcal and internatinal humanitarian develpment. 2. Identify lcal and internatinal structures in place that perpetuate r seek t alleviate pverty. 3. Develp critical thinking skills that will allw ne t begin t assess the effectiveness f any given humanitarian practice. 4. Develp skills necessary t rganize events that supprt a humanitarian cause (hw t rganize and run a fundraiser r awareness event). 5. Demnstrate increased familiarity with Khmer histry, plitics, and current humanitarian issues. 6. Create a plan f actin fr future endeavrs that will seek t imprve ne s cmmunity, including in advcacy. Starting in March, students will be required t meet with their cmmittee in persn t receive training and supprt t: 1. Prepare fr prjects in Cambdia 2. MEASURE: Students will synthesize the relatinship f lcal humanitarian crises and humanitarian crises in Cambdia and what actins can be taken at hme and abrad t address these issues (putting int practice principles learned frm January and February sessins). This will be demnstrated thrugh a grup presentatin abut an assigned tpic. MEASURE: Students will plan a fundraiser t be carried ut in March r April. Success will be measured in accrdance t: 1) the financial gal they set and 2) a reflectin n the prcess they went thrugh in carrying ut their fundraiser. Students will als be given specific rles and tasks t prepare fr in alignment with
