2 Who are We? District provides K-12 educational services at 18 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, 1 K-8, 4 high schools, and 1 adult education school for students living in Tustin and portions of the Orange, Irvine, and Santa Ana areas of Orange County. Comprised of approximately: 24,130 Students The District is a learning community rich in heritage and committed to a tradition of excellence. Our mission is to ensure that each student optimizes individual achievement through an educational system characterized by challenging and exciting curricula and inspiring personalized instruction.
3 Background Spring 2017 District received a demand letter alleging that the District s at large method of election violates the California Voting Rights Act ( CVRA ) May 15, 2017 Regular Board Meeting Board adopts resolution to: Initiate transition to by-trustee area election system State intent to seek waiver of election requirement from State Board of Education
4 Commitment to Transparency The District has taken this transition to a new election system very seriously. Throughout the process, the District has been, and continues to be, committed to transparency and educating its residents with public meetings and hearings.
5 AB 350 Revised Transition Requirements Required to hold two (2) pre-map Public Hearings within a 30 day span to solicit public input in advance of the creation of map options by the District s demographer, National Demographics Corporation ( NDC ) Outreach efforts in advance of Pre-Map Public Hearings: Letter home to parents in multiple languages Newspaper advertisements District website Post notices of public hearing
