5 ReadWorks The Three Branches of Government The Three Branches of Go ernment Susan LaBella The United States Constitution was written over two hundred years ago. It explains how the United States government should work. The people who wrote the Constitution did not want one person or group to have too much power. That was why they divided the government into three parts known as branches. The branches are the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. Each branch has its own responsibilities. The branches work together, but they also check each other to make sure no branch has too much power. The legislative branch includes the United States Congress. Congress is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Voters in each state elect their representation in the House and their senators. Those men and women o to Washington, D.C., to make laws. The executive branch has the power to carry out the laws. It includes the president, the vice president, and their group of advisers called the cabinet. Every four years, Americans vote to elect a president and a vice president. The judicial branch decides on the meanings of the laws and whether laws break the rules of the Constitution. This branch includes the United States Supreme Court. Nine justices serve on the Supreme Court. The president appoints the justices, and the Senate approves them. The justices7 job is to decide if the country s laws go against the Constitution. 10 Monthly At Home" Reading Logs You are expected to read at least 25 minutes a day. This is your time to read a book, magazine, or newspaper to your liking. You are to document the minutes you read for each specific day with your parent s initialing alongside the weekly totals. I know there will be days in which you will not be able to read, if this may be the case, then double up on a day where you have more spare time. I do not expect you to read every night, but, if possible, go for it! Do not procrastinate and wait until the last week of the month or that last day of the month for that matter. Space out your time and use it wisely. For those of you that love to read, this will be easy for you. For those of you that don't read for pleasure, again, value the time you have and pick up a good book and read it! Although every month is different in terms of how many days there are, I expect you to read at least a total of 750 minutes (12.5 hours) for each month. The month may have 28 days or 31 days; each month will be calculated as if they all had 30 days. On the back of your monthly reading log please list the title and author of each reading piece you chose to read. You only have to write the title one time only if it is a continuous read over the course of several days. Write B for book, M for magazine, and N for newspaper in the spaces provided so I can see the different types of resources you chose. Provide a brief paragraph answering the questions and list some new vocabulary words you came across during your reading. Happy Reading!

Did you meet your reading goal you set for yourself? Why or why not? Where did most of your reading take place? What type of goal do you want to set for yourself during the next month? Respond in paragraph form. New vocabulary (at least 2) I learned from my reading along with its definition:
