1 Special Edition August 2014 Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was sworn in during a ceremony culminating the Boule convention held in Charlotte from July 12 July 18. The installation took place at the Charlotte Convention Center before thousands of Alpha Kappa Alpha members, dignitaries, and loved ones. In ascending to the Sorority s chief leadership position, Buckhanan Wilson makes history as the only member to serve four consecutive terms on its international board of directors. The Program theme is Launching New Dimensions of Service. The program features five target areas, one Signature Program, and Community Service Days. The Five target areas are: 1. Educational Enrichment 2. Health Promotion 3. Family Strengthening 4. Environmental Ownership 5. Global Impact In addition to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Madame Supreme Basileus is involved with other service organizations including The Milwaukee Chapter of Links, Inc., Professional Dimensions, The National Black MBA Association and Top Ladies of Distinction Inc., where she has served as National 1st Vice President, National 2nd Vice President, National Recording Secretary, National Area Director, and two stints as President of the award winning Milwaukee Chapter.
2 Boule Report - Basileus Delaina Holmes: To the members of Alpha Chi Omega, Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Basileus and represent you at the 66 th Boule in Charlotte, North Carolina. I attended all seven plenary sessions with close to 10,000 Sorors. Additionally, I attended the Diamond Silver Golden Soror Luncheon, Midwestern Regional Luncheon, as well as the Legacy Dinner and Formal Gala. I also attended the workshop entitled Shatter Your Personal Glass Ceiling: Part 2, which was a continuation of the workshop held at the Leadership Conference in Montreal, Canada. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the Ecumenical Service, Opening of the Health Village, Town Hall Meeting, or Opening of the Timeless History Exhibit because the events occurred before my Sunday flight arrived in Charlotte. Some memorable moments from the Plenary Sessions from my point of view: First Plenary Session Registration report by Soror Cynthia Howell indicated that there were 9,033 people registered and that there were 2,816 delegates certified to vote and that we would be using the electronic voting system during the plenary sessions. Second Plenary Session Meditation was from Soror Faye Beverly Bryant 21 st Supreme Basileus. She presented Rules from God. Third Plenary Session Meditation was from Soror Eva L., Evans 24 th Supreme Basileus. She stated that It s not who we are, but whose we are. Supreme Basileus Carolyn House Stewart provided this GLTTS program update: 6,000,000 volunteer hours 24,000,000 people were served EYL enrolled 15,000 middle school age girls Asthma Prevention engaged 16,836 Donated $125,559 gift card value for youth aging out of foster care 17,521 Sorors reactivated since 2010 Ended 2013 with 58,132 active members Donated $250,000 to UNCF and received a seat on the Board of Directors Donated $504, to Heifer International in 4 years Donated $225,000 from chapters across the country Update on litigation o 5 pending lawsuits involving the sorority were resolved o Participated in 4 court order mediations o Compton & Cofield vs Howard University Alpha Chapter - The Court denied Plaintiffs' oral motion for sanctions without prejudice. o Twyla Leeks vs Great Lakes Region o Barbara A. McKenzie scheduled for arbitration 8/20/2014 o May 2012 retroactive Housing 501(c)3 Status
3 Fifth Plenary Session induction of two of the three honorary Sorors took place. Soror Ava DuVernay was not present due to her commitment to her film production schedule. Sorors Senator ZC Allyson Maynard Gibson and Brandy Norwood were present. I might add that Soror Brandy is also a legacy as both her grandmother and mother are Sorors and were present at this boule and were able to witness her induction. Final Registration Report: 5 Diamond, 919 Golden, 8,946 Graduate, 505 Undergraduate, 32 children, 22 youth, 59 staff members, and 780 vendors. Total registered for the 66 th Boule was 11,542. Voting Strength for this boule was 3,336 by regions: Central 286, Far-western 212, Great Lakes 264, International 1, Mid-Atlantic 513, Mid-Western 111, North-Atlantic 518, South-Atlantic 672, South Central 349, Southeastern 334, General 12, Directorate 18, Boule 4, Executive Director 1, and Supreme Basileus 1. Sixth Plenary Session Teller s Report was presented by Soror Carla N. Archie from Rho Psi Omega Chapter. The results from the voting were as follows: Supreme Basileus Dorothy Buchanan Wilson (was installed and elected at the 65 th Boule) First Supreme Anti-Basileus Glenda Baskin Glover Second Supreme Anti-Basileus Autumn Kyles Supreme Grammateus Charletta Wilson Jacks Supreme Tamiouchos Danetta Anthony Reed Undergraduate Members at Large Annalise Anise and Kaari Hargrove Regional Directors were announced based upon the results from the regional conferences held during the year. Seventh Plenary Session There were a total of seven resolutions presented at this boule (5 subject matter and 2 courtesy). Report from the 29 th Supreme Basileus was presented by Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson in which she rolled out the program targets for her administration entitled Launching New Dimensions of Service. I am positive that our Anti-Basileus will elaborate on each initiative at this year s chapter retreat. Time and Place updates are as follows: 2015 Chicago (L), 2016 Atlanta (B), 2017 Las Vegas (L), 2018 Houston (B), North Atlantic Region (B), and 2022 International Region (B). Additionally there will be an International Founder s Celebration in Washington, DC during 2018 for our 110 th Anniversary Celebration. Boule will be reduced to four days and cluster 1 day. Post Boule Tour and National Founder s Day Celebration has been suspended as part of the new Supreme Basileus desire to reduce directorate expenses. Again Sorors, this is just a few of the highlights from the 66 th Boule. It would be close to impossible for me or any of the delegates to give you a complete exhaustive report of everything that occurred at the Boule. I would encourage you all to make time to get to know our great sorority better by attending more regional and international conferences. Sisterly Submitted, ddholmes Soror Delaina D. Holmes Basileus
4 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Chi Omega Chapter 66 th Boule, July 12 18, 2014 Delegate Report Soror Gerri Webb Madame Basileus, Soror Delaina Holmes and members of Alpha Chi Omega Chapter. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as a delegate at the 66th Boule. I attended the Public meeting; all of the Plenary Sessions; the AKA Housing Foundation, Inc Annual meeting. I voted; attended the Ivy Beyond the Wall; the Midwestern Regional Luncheon; the Advanced Protocol workshop and the Babyface Concert. There were approximately 10,000 in attendance. There were 985 chapters represented. The host chapters and convention staff did a great job getting people where they needed to be. Advanced Protocol Practices Workshop Since it was Advanced Protocol most of the topics were at the Regional and International level. I will make copies of the handouts for the Protocol Chairperson. A few of the topics that were discussed are as follows: Soror Code of Ethics We reviewed the Soror Code of Ethics and discussed the meaning. Social Media Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated official business and meetings should not be put on social media. Honorary members and celebrities that attend Boule. As you know Sorors love to take pictures, therefore we ve been given the name AKArazzi s. One of the reasons that Soror s are limited to the pictures that can be taken of and with Celebrities is because of the Sororities contractual obligations regarding picture taking. We also discussed responsibilities of Protocol Committees at conferences.. The new Supreme Basileus, Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson announced her Target Theme and Five Targets. The Theme is Launching New Dimensions of Service. The Five targets are: 1. Educational Enrichment 2. Health Promotion 3. Family Strengthening 4. Environmental Ownership 5. Global Impact Her goal is for us to continue doing what we do well and address some additional needs of the communities. She also unveiled her new logo, which I love. Charlotte welcomed us with open arms. We were recognized on the flights to Charlotte, in the airport, at the hotels, restaurants. We turned Charlotte Pink and Green. A young lady at the airport said to me I was downtown yesterday and everything was pink and green.. My response was Yes, that s how we roll! In my opinion this was one of the best Boule s I ve attended in several years. It was much more positive then the last couple of Boule s. I am looking forward to the leadership that new Supreme Basileus, Soror Dorothy Buckhanan will bring to the Sorority.
