6 2017 WV YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT YOUTH GOVERNOR & CHIEF JUSTICE LETTER So you want to do YG? Now you find yourself presented with a choice and an opportunity. The chance to become a part of the most inclusive and realistic simulation of the state government available. Along with the knowledge of how to go about making real change in the world. All of this while meeting people from across the state. Being able to share your ideas about making West Virginia better. The choice is whether or not you are willing to work. You will be asked to research your respective branch of government in order to make Youth in Government a realistic learning experience. I trust that you will all make the right choice to make this year s YG a weekend to look forward to. Good luck and see you in Charleston. 8 Matthew Meadows 2017 West Virginia Youth Governor s Platform Education: Social: Support the Expansion of Vocational Training for High School Students Approve More Locations being Available for Welding Certification Tests Support the Use of Drug Rehabilitation facilities and Similar Programs to Help Addicts all Across the State For Stuff Regulation of Prescription Drugs Oppose Unreasonable and Over Use of Standardized Testing Oppose Common Core Curriculum and Teaching Standards Imposed by Common Core (for the reasoning that in my experience teachers are generally unhappy with the standards and prefer to teach in ways they find most affective. I also oppose it for the reason that many teachers in the state of WV have degrees from pre common core legislation, and the state has spent a good deal of money on workshops and retraining programs) Support Allowing Students Who Have Received Sufficient Credits to Graduate Early Economic: My stance on various social issues is one where my personal beliefs sometimes vary from my interpretation of the law. I know the United States is a place individuals of all life choices and creeds are free to live, work, and purse happiness in ways they see fit, as long as said ways are not total threats to public safety and another s rights in the process. Therefore, I make my stance and decision on certain issues solely upon my understanding of state law and Supreme Court precedent with regard to where the law lacks and rights need protecting by the powers that be. I will approve any legislation that upholds, protects, and establishes social rights that in a free democratic society should exist, if they are established in a way that does not hinder the rights of others. Criminal Justice/Corrections: Support WV Moving Toward a More Diversified Economy Approve Legislation that Creates Certain Opportunities for Out of State Businesses to Develop in WV (tax breaks, infrastructure investment plans, etc.) Oppose Income and Property Tax Increases in Fund Legislation that does not benefit the Majority of WV Citizens. I would rather see Budget Reform to Pay for such Programs. (I do understand the importance of all tax revenue, but I have also witnessed, first hand, individuals taxed to death, and I believe with smarter government this should never happen.) Labor: Support the Gradual and Cost Effective Implementation of Body/Dash Cams for Cops as Protection from Unjust Prosecutions (Beginning with state law enforcement, then to county, then municipality officers) Support the Implementation of Work Programs for Convicts, not Only to Make Incarceration Less of a Burden to society, but to Also Allow Convicts Experience that can be used upon Returning to Society I Believe the Rights of Skilled Workers to Safe Working Environment is Essential Support Right to Work Oppose the Further Increase of Minimum Wage (post $8.75) 8
9 Gun Control: Environmental: Believe Gun Safety Education Should be in Common Place Support Strict Legislation to Protect and Preserve Watershed Environments Pro Second Amendment with my Interpretation Being that Any Legal Adult American Citizen has the Right to Own Firearms Until that Right is Forfeited by Criminal Action Support Background Checks with the Purchase of a Firearm from a Dealership Oppose the Outlawing of Assault Style Firearms and High Capacity Magazines, (I believe these style of weapons have a place in home defense, and I have witnessed use of these style weapons for livestock protection from predators by landowners. In a state with large agricultural areas this tool should not be denied to landowners.) However I Approve Background Checks when Purchasing These Items. Oppose Strict EPA Standard Mainly for the Reason that the Goals Imposed Would Take a Toll on our Economy Short Term, if these Standards can be met Gradually While Diversifying Energy Production Field to Environmentally Safe Alternatives that are Reliable and Still Support a WV Work Force, than EPA Standards can be Implemented Feel that WV s Natural Resources Should be Protected for Future Generations Oppose Retraining When Renewing a Concealed Carry Permit Opposed Conceal Carry Without a Permit Support Open Carry without a Permit at Age 18. (This does not include school zones, and Veterans: Energy: Support Programs to Help Veterans in All Aspects of Adjusting to a Civilian Lifestyle. (I believe these programs are especially worth funding) Approve any Legislation that Makes Healthcare for Veterans in the State of WV easier to Access and More Affordable Support the Diversifying of our Energy Production to Other Forms Besides Coal; However, I Believe the Transition from Coal Extraction to Other Forms of Energy Should be Gradual Feel that Rights of Landowners Should be Protected in the Wake of Energy Company Land Development no Matter the Company s Good Standing with the State. (Landowners and People Come First) 9
