2 2013 KCSEA Conference Keynote Speaker Tim Cavanagh So, did you hear the one about the high school teacher who walked into a comedy club--and they hired him? That's where the Tim Cavanagh comedy story begins. For a full year, Tim taught teenagers by day. By night, he sang his funny songs in Chicago comedy clubs. "Not surprisingly, I found the biggest difference between the classroom and the nightclub was the drunks--which I generally let the principal handle," Tim says. Since leaving the classroom, Tim Cavanagh has brought his comedic songs and inventive stand-up to concert halls, corporations, college campuses and nightclubs across America. Over the years, he has also made several trips to Canada, where he has to convert all his jokes to Celsius and his one degree in philosophy becomes a bone-chilling minus 31. He has even performed on the island of St. Lucia, his first time ever doing comedy in the Atlantic Standard time zone, where they got his jokes one hour sooner than they would have in New York. Early on, it was Tim's funny songs that got a lot of attention. His song, "I Wanna Kiss Her (But She Won't Let Me)," was the first of Tim's pieces to receive national radio exposure, on the legendary "Dr. Demento" show. Other songs followed, including "99 Dead Baboons," "Get Drunk with Dignity," and "Really Safe Sex." His funny music has been heard on radio stations everywhere, as well as on XM Satellite and even the BBC. In 1997, Tim released his first CD, "Sounds Like Fun!" By then he had become a regular guest on "The Bob & Tom Show," a nationally syndicated radio show now heard in 150 markets. For two years, Tim did a weekly segment on the show called "The One Minute Song," which spawned two more CDs released on Tim's own label, Hits & Giggles Records. At a recent Hits & Giggles awards dinner, Tim was recognized by the label as their "Best Artist," an award he has won three out of the last four years. Even though he is the only act on the roster, a misty-eyed Cavanagh was quoted as saying, "It's still a big thrill." As for television, Tim has not only appeared on Comedy Central, he was chosen by the network to do several live performances for their clients and customers. His national appearances on ABC-TV, Showtime, WGN, and Comcast have helped Tim deal with his biggest TV disappointment--calling QVC seconds too late to get a great deal on a colander set. The book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Jokes, features a half-page of Tim's advice on "How Not to Introduce a Joke," as well as other select jokes. And just to clear up a rumor: if you look up "gullible" in the dictionary, you will NOT find a picture of Tim. He's checked. Tim's book, Chicken Soup for the Vegetarian Soul, just went through its sixth printing. Cavanagh firmly believes in printing them "one at a time." 2 P a g e

3 KSCEA Conference Sessions Submitted by: Catherine Craft, Chair of Speakers Committee The Speakers Committee reviewed last year s evaluation comments (yes, we read those evaluations!) before we began our search for presenters. Here s what we have for you Certified yoga instructor, Melanie Back, will teach us moves that we can do at our desks and incorporate into our work days. Frances Waldren, Problem Gambling Specialist, will present a session on the economic factors regarding problem gambling in regards to families. Danny Johnson will present a two-part session on Bridges Out of Poverty. His presentation will involve helping the audience create a mental model of poverty and also discuss the other classes driving forces and hidden rules. Brian Kinnaird of the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas will give us insight into the world of domestic violence and how it impacts the families we serve. Joni Wilson and Paula Scott will present a session on the importance of right sized child support orders whether at the establishment stage or modification stage. Tish Morrical, President of the Family Law Section of the Kansas Bar Association, will present a session on the Kansas Child Support Guidelines. Randy Lind and Valynda Porter will be reviewing the Case Closure Criteria and the importance of getting cases closed correctly. Tonya Brunson, DCF Kansas Interstate Manager will present UIFSA 101. Dee Price Sanders, one of our most popular speakers will present again this year on a topic to-be-determined. Five sessions at Conference will qualify for Continuing Legal Education credit. The one hour of ethics will be an interactive session with YoungWilliams Attorneys Brandi Ridgeway and Amy Raymond, that will allow us to examine the ethical issues we face daily as IV-D attorneys. Chris Kellogg will cover the IV-D How To for Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 Bankruptcies. Linda Henry Elrod, Director of the Washburn University School of Law Children and Family Law Center, will discuss the recent Kansas Supreme Court case Frazier v. Goudschall. Flags can be no more than 3 feet high and 4 feet wide (any flag larger than these dimensions will be disqualified and kicked off the island). They must also be free standing, so you ll want 2 stands/poles (no more than 5 feet high) to best display your offices artistic abilities. Two prizes/idols will be given. The first will be the Best of Show flag as voted on by the session and keynote speakers. The second will be the prize for the most popular voted on by the membership at large through money collected. Dependability and reliability can describe them; they volunteer for extra committees or assist with caseload coverage. They really go the extra mile. They are incredibly passionate about the Child Support Program. Customer Service Award - This award is given to the person who provides exceptional customer service on a consistent basis. This person is willing to assist customers regardless of who the case is assigned to. They are willing to do research, contact other DCF/Contractor staff, other program workers, etc. to help answer the customer s questions. Guardian Angel Award This Award is for an individual who has had a positive influence on child support policies, procedures, or processes. This can be at the Statewide, Regional, or Service Center level.
