1 AWARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT Program Information Form SERVICE TO THE BAR Name of YLD Affiliate: VA - Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Affiliate Type/Division: State Affiliate: 3000 or less What is the title of your Service to the Bar project? VBA Legislative Breakfast Type of Project: Legislative Degree of Change or Growth: New Project Project Description: On September 22, 2015, the VBA kicked off the first installment of its Northern Virginia Membership Series a legislative breakfast at the Tysons Corner office of Hogan Lovells. Over 50 attorneys attended to network over bagels and coffee, while engaging in lively discussions with featured speakers Del. David B. Albo, Del. Richard C. Rip Sullivan, Jr., and VBA lobbyist Jeffrey S. Palmore. Delegates Albo and Sullivan (both practicing attorneys) provided their thoughts on the General Assembly elections, the 2016 Virginia legislative session, the judicial appointment process and the declining number of lawyers serving in the Virginia legislature. Jeffrey Palmore described the VBA s role in non-partisan law reform and how the substantive law sections of the VBA work with our lobbyists to propose legislation. The session was interesting and informative for attorneys of all backgrounds. The VBA YLD Membership co-chairs for Northern Virginia planned the event in conjunction with board members from the Virginia Bar Association Board of Governors. Needs Assessment (What was the reason for undertaking this project?): The reason for the project was to highlight the VBA s role in non-partisan law reform (lobbying) and to engage members of the legal community interested in the legislative activities of the VBA. The event was the first part in our Northern Virginia Membership series that showcased different aspects of the VBA and the value of VBA membership. Achievement of Goals / Impact (What were the goals and objectives of this project?): The goal was to increase awareness of the VBA s lobbying efforts and engage interested members in legislative activities. The goals were met as the event had a great turnout and prompted follow up action by several participants. If goals were not met, why not? n/a
2 Will this be a recurring affiliate project? Yes If yes, will you make any revisions? Most likely yes. It was very successful and would be nice to do it annually as a legislative update. Degree of Participation by Members How many young lawyer members actually participated in this project? Officers, Directors, Board membership? 1 Committee members? 4 General membership? 10 Was the project conducted with the Senior Bar? Yes What other groups or individuals participated and in what numbers? The VBA general practice membership and other non-vba members, approx. 40 of them. Judges, members of the legislature, and bar leaders attended as well approx. 5 of them. What do you think is the optimum amount of members needed to carry out this project? To plan and carry out this project, 5 YLD members worked well. However, I think it could be done with less. TIMEFRAME How much time did it take to organize the project? A couple of months. How much time did it take to recruit members for the project? A couple of months. How much time did it take to carry out the project from beginning to end? 6 months from initial planning to implementation. BUDGET What was the cost of this project excluding in-kind/donated services? Hogan Lovells paid for the breakfast and hosted the event, so no charge. I estimate the value to be around $2,000 for the space and food. How was the project funded? No funding needed. How long did it take to raise the funds needed for this project? n/a What suggestions/recommendations would you make to other young lawyer groups who would consider undertaking this project? You need to contact members of the state legislature and lobbyists
3 first and obtain their availability to speak. Then reserve the space and engage in marketing efforts to promote the event. It requires some planning so give yourself enough time to get a solid turnout.

They are therefore automatically included in the workers' compensation policy unless choosing not to be covered and "opting out." Whether or not the owner of the corporation "opts out" of coverage, he or she is still considered an employee, and if the entity has two additional employees, workers' compensation coverage is required.
