Jeffrey Poulson, District Court Judge, District 3A LOCATION: ROOMS Judge Poulson will share how the Veteran s Court Program got its start, how the program is going and the impact the program has had on veterans in Woodbury County. Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS) Speaker: Julie Schneider, Youth Emergency Services and Shelter Julie Schneider will be talking about how the YESS assists juveniles who are in the juvenile court system. She will touch upon issues such as schooling, community outreach, mental health services and various other services the shelter provides. State Public Defender s Office Speaker: Jason Dunn, Public Defender s Office For this session, Jason Dunn will be talking about his many experiences as a public defender, including stories and tricks of the trade he has learned from court reporters and how his experiences with court reporters have helped him become the supervisor he is today. Scott Johnson, McKee Voorhees & Sease PLC This session will cover recent trends affecting your patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret rights and the potential impact on the flow of liability between licensor and licensee.

This presentation will provide a global view of the sources of law that govern UM/UIM claims, and provide the listener with an outline of the commons issues that arise in these cases. Understanding and Avoiding Wrongful Convictions Speaker: Brian Farrell, University of Iowa College of Law Since the early 1990s, over 350 individuals have been exonerated based on DNA evidence. This presentation will introduce the phenomenon of wrongful convictions, examine the common causes and consider how future errors can be avoided. JUDGES TRACK #1 LOCATION: ROOMS :30-5:30 Law, Justice and the Holocaust: How the Courts Failed Germany Speaker: William Frederick Meinecke, Jr. and Ann M. O Rourke, National Holocaust Museum JUDGES TRACK #2 Facts v Fiction on Opioids for Judges Speaker: Kelly K. Dineen, Attorney and Registered Nurse LOCATION: ROOMS This presentation will provide an overview of the existing evidence around the non-therapeutic use of opioids (prescription and non-prescription), the complexities of addressing opioid use disorders and the evidence base for current interventions and treatments. Judicial Security in Changing Times Speaker: Roxann Ryan, Commissioner, Iowa Department of Public Safety Judges and the court community may face threats and threatens inside and outside the courtroom and the courthouse. Careful planning and precautions can increase safety without disrupting court processes. Join Roxann Ryan for an in-depth discussion on the most recent safety measures being taken by state officials. Media Issues in the Courtroom and Beyond Speaker: Hon. Adria Kester, District Court Judge, District 2B This session will cover media presence in the courtroom and the impact of social media.
4 PLENARY TRACK LOCATION: BALLROOM B 1:00-2:00 The Iowa Constitution: Origins and Back Stories Prof. Todd Pettys, H. Blair and Joan V. White Chair in Civil Litigation, University of Iowa College of Law Prof. Pettys will provide an introduction to some of the issues that dominated Iowa s constitutional debates in the midnineteenth century. The debates concerned issues ranging from the rights of Blacks, to the connection between the nation s slavery politics and the placement of the state s geographic boundaries, to the state s need for a reliable currency for conducting ordinary economic transactions. On each of those issues, he hopes to provide attendees with a richer understanding of public life in mid-nineteenth-century Iowa. RETIREMENT TRACK 2:30-3:00 Supreme Court Requirements and What License Status to Choose Speaker: Tre Critelli, Office of Professional Regulation LOCATION: BALLROOM B In this presentation, Tre will outline the steps required by court rules to exit a law practice. He will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the license-status choices retiring attorneys can make. 3:00-3:30 Malpractice Insurance Tail Policies for Protection After Exiting the Practice Speaker: Matt Fitterer, CNA Matt will discuss the potential risks retiring attorneys face and how to minimize those risks, including the use of malpractice insurance tail policies. Practical Knowledge for Retirement Speakers: Roberta Chambers, Retired Attorney, Roberta A. Chambers, Attorney at Law; Jay Eaton, Retired Attorney, Nyemaster Goode, PLC; and J.C. Salvo, Retired Attorney, Salvo Deren Schenck Gross Swain & Argotsinger, PC All three lawyers on the panel have wrestled with the legal, psychological and emotional uncertainties of retiring when to retire, what to do with the practice, how to occupy their post-retirement time, etc. and have adjusted successfully to life after the law. They represent a large urban firm, a mid-sized rural firm, and a solo rural firm Question and Answer Session WHAT S TRENDING IN LAW TRACK 2:30-3:00 Military Discharge Upgrades After the Hagel Memo Speaker: Todd Schmidt, Iowa Legal Aid LOCATION: ROOMS On September 3, 2014, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel issued a memorandum to the military review boards containing new guidance for veterans with PTSD who received a less than honorable discharge. Under the new guidance, liberal consideration will be given in cases where PTSD incurred in service played a role in the veteran s discharge. This presentation will discuss the implementation of the new guidance and how you can assist clients seeking a discharge upgrade.
