27 B8 September 29, 2016 Expo promotes Wayland businesses BY VIRGINIA RANSBOTTOM STAFF WRITER The Wayland Area Chamber of Commerce will be highlighting area businesses, products and services at the 12th Annual Community Expo on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wayland Union Middle School, 701 Wildcat Drive. The chamber bills it as West Michigan s best expo. That s because more than 80 vendors and over 3,000 guests attended last year s expo. We expect the same amount this year, if not more guests, said chamber director Denise Behm. We re so excited. While parking and admission is free, vendors will also be offering plenty of freebies. The first 500 adults who enter will receive a free reusable canvas bag. The bag will also come in handy for the many prizes to We just wanted to show appreciation and give thanks for everything law enforcement officers do Denise Behm Director, Wayland Area Chamber of Commerce, speaking about the Just#SayThanks campaign be won, including a chance to enter United Bank s money booth, where the air is swirling with cash bills. The first 500 adults will also receive a vendor bingo card. Getting five vendor stamps on the card allows participants to enter to win one of six $25 gift cards. Ed Koehn Ford is sponsoring the grocery guess game. A vehicle s trunk will be filled with groceries and the person who guesses the closest price of the groceries wins the trunk-full. A Taste of Wayland Area will offer free bite-sized samples from area food establishments, while live entertainment by Mood Swings jazz band provides the music in the food court. Bring the children for educational and interactive reptile presentations by Critchlow Reptile Sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Last year s crowd for this event filled 100 seats at each show. Children will also be delighted to be able to have their picture taken with local emergency and law officials in police cars, fire trucks, a SWAT vehicle and emergency command center. Although Griff, the Grand Rapids Griffon s mascot, cannot make it this year, the Wayland Kiwanis Club will be offering a bounce house. That s new this year, Behm said. They ll also be giving away free kids T-shirts. United Bank s UB Roo will be among the crowd. Roo is the bank s giraffe mascot. Vendors are sure to delight the crowd as they try to out-do each other with prizes given for best use of produce, most educational, best nonprofit, best wow factor, judges choice, and best of show. The city manager, mayor and school superintendent will be the judges. Just#SayThanks kick off At the expo, the Chamber Ambassadors will also be kicking off their Just#SayThanks campaign to show appreciation and thanks for local law enforcement. The campaign runs through Oct. 31. Fifty staked yard signs will line residential yards along Main and Superior streets. Twenty area businesses will be decorated downtown with blue lights and window clings. A thin blue line along with the American flag will also be on display. At the end of the month, an appreciation dinner will be given for local law enforcement and their families. We just wanted to show appreciation and give thanks for everything law enforcement officers do, Behm said. When they put on their badge, they don t know if they will be coming home at the end of the shift and they do it to serve us. Behm said the ambassadors have received a good response from homeowners who were contacted for permission to place the signs. One said if there weren t enough signs to get to his yard, he would pay for one, Behm said. One of the many positive s I received said, I m so proud to live in a community where people care about those who protect us. Visit the Chamber Ambassador s booth at the expo to see how to get involved.
