2 Five Things YOU Can Do 1. Learn the Rules Figure out what Illinois congressional redistricting puzzle and new legislative map means for you! Registration deadlines Early voting deadlines Review the do s and don ts for nonprofits 2. Help Register People to Vote Post important dates for your staff, board and audience members Create a voter registration station at your organization Organize volunteers to register voters at your events and performances 3. Build an Informed and Engaged Voting Base Use , newsletters, phone calls, Facebook, and Twitter to notify your community about: Voter registration deadline Early voting dates and locations Election Day Non-partisan candidate forums or debates 4. Educate Candidates Put the candidates on your lists so that they receive updates about your work, your organization, or business. Request meetings with candidates from all parties to discuss issues related to the arts, culture and arts education Introduce yourself to the elected official s staff. Ask for their business card and follow up with them after the meeting regarding the issue you spoke about. 5. 3 Getting Ready to VOTE To confirm that you are registered to vote and where you can go to vote on Election Day To confirm that you are registered to vote in Illinois, visit and type in your first name, last name, and home zip code. If you are registered, the site will confirm that voter registration information was found and display your polling place for Election Day on November 6, To find which legislative district you live in and who will be on your ballot You can easily find out your current Illinois legislative and congressional districts for the November 6, 2012 elections by visiting: and entering your home address in the top left corner. Once you know your congressional, state house, and state senate districts, visit to find out who will be appearing on your ballot for those districts on November 6 th, To find out more about who is funding the campaigns of candidates in your districts Once you know the names of individuals who will be appearing on your ballot, you can find out who has been supporting their campaign financially. It s easy. Visit and enter the first and last name of the candidate whose campaign finances you would like to know more about. Once you see the candidate for your district and click on their name, you will see a profile for that candidate, including their electoral history in the state and a list of any active campaign committees. To discover who has been contributing to the campaign of the candidate in question, click on any active campaign committee links. Each active campaign committee link should display basic information about the committee as well as all financial disclosures made to the Illinois State Board of Elections. You can click on any Quarterly Report to view a summary financial report for the quarter. Viewers of quarterly disclosures can click on the Itemized links in the Receipts section to view a list of campaign contributors (businesses and individuals), the amount that was contributed, and the date the contribution was made. Please note that the Illinois State Board of Elections does not require contributions over $150 to be disclosed publicly.

29 Key Race: Illinois 8 th Congressional District Impact of Redistricting: District Arts Presence: The new 8 th district covers the northern suburbs of Chicago, including Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, and Palatine. The recent redistricting process significantly impacted the geographic reach of the 8 th district, which has shifted downwards towards the northern Chicago suburbs, moving into a large area formerly contained within the 6 th district. The new 8 th district includes only 25% of the area previously included in the former 8 th district. The new 8th th district includes such arts and cultural organizations as the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Children s Theatre of Elgin, and Arts in Bartlett. November 2012 Election Notes on the race: The congressional race for the 8 th district is considered to be a Likely Democratic race, meaning that the race is not considered competitive, with the advantage going to the Democratic candidate (Cook Political Report). 30 Key Race: Illinois 10 th Congressional District Impact of Redistricting: District Arts Presence: The new 10 th district covers the northeast corner of the state and mostly includes the northern suburbs of Chicago, containing the majority of Lake County. The recent redistricting process pushed the 10 th district further west into the more Democraticleaning suburbs and expanded the district north along Lake Michigan to the Wisconsin border. The new 10 th district includes such arts and cultural organizations as the Chicago Botanic Gardens, the Kohl Children s Museum of Greater Chicago, and the David Adler Cultural Center. November 2012 Election Notes on the race: The congressional race for the 10 th district is considered to be a competitive race with a Democratic advantage (Cook Political Report). Congressman Dold was named the country s 5 th most vulnerable Republican incumbent, according to The Hill. VS. The new boundaries contain many suburban areas considered likely to lean Republican. The recent redistricting process had a minimal impact on the geographic reach of the 12 th district, representing a small shift in the map which represents a roughly 5% gain from the former 19 th district. The new 12 th district includes such arts and cultural organizations as the Carbondale Community Arts, the Art on the Square Foundation, the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacoby Arts Center. 33 Key Race: Illinois 13 th Congressional District November 2012 Election Impact of Redistricting: District Arts Presence: The 13 th district covers a large section of the center of the state and includes Madison, Montgomery, Sangamon, Macon, and Champaign counties, as well as a portion of the City of Springfield. The recent redistricting process has resulted in a completely redrawn 13 th district which covers none of the geographic areas from the previous map. The new 13 th district, which is considered to be less favorable to Republicans, includes large portions of the former 15 th, 17 th, and 19 th districts. The new 13 th district includes such arts and cultural organizations as the McLean County Arts Center, the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, the Decatur Area Arts Council, and the Illinois State Museum. 34 Key Race: Illinois 17 th Congressional District November 2012 Election Impact of Redistricting: District Arts Presence: The new 17 th district covers a section of Illinois which stretches from the northwest corner of the state southward towards the midsection of the state, and includes a portion of Winnebago County, as well as Henry, Knox, and Fulton counties. The recent redistricting process significantly impacted the geographic reach of the 17 th district, which has shifted upwards towards the northwest corner of the state and removed a portion of the former district which had trailed southward along the Missouri border and extended through the middle of the state.
