Motion Passed V. Approval of the Cabinet Minutes from December 2, 2015 a. Motion to approve the cabinet minutes from 12/2/15 i. Seconded ii. Motion Passed VI. New Business a. SGA Recognition Hearing i. Anthropology Club 1. Club Speech a. Vice President of Anthropology Club: Anthropology is the study of people from the bones in our bodies to the clothes on our backs. It offers a global perspective of looking at different kinds of people. It s a great background to have going into any business; being able to see that people come from different places and are different for various reasons. We are planning on doing different talks with professors in the anthropology department as well as professors in other departments. We also want to show films and have outside speakers come in and speak. We have plans to fundraise for a conference in Canada. We will also be hosting graduate sessions to write resumes. It s different then writing other resumes. We have previously been SGA approved and the funding helped us previously function as a club. 2. Questions from Senate a. How many Members do you have? i. 15, and we ve only had e-board meetings at this point so far, but we will be reaching out to other departments soon. b. Why did your club lose SGA recognition? i. All of our e-board graduated in December last year and we have only been unrecognized for one semester. c. Is the communication better now between e-board? i. Yes absolutely d. How long have you been in the club? i. Since my Freshman Year e. How do you plan to increase membership? 4

3. Debate i. Different fundraising events and tabling in the student center. We want to do little events for example like a dig for little bones in a sandbox or a race between students to construct a skeleton as fast as possible. We also want to try to raise awareness that anyone can take an anthropology class or join the club, and how it can help them as a student. f. How many trips does your club take per semester on average? i. We typically take 1 large conference at least every semester with 2 or 3 museum trips per semester g. Have you only fundraised for conferences, or have you fundraised for other things? i. We ve fundraised for trips as well. And we want to get different speakers from outside of the University. h. How do you become a member of the Anthropology club? i. Just coming to the club meeting makes you a member i. What does SGA recognition mean to you? i. It means better access to funds and it s much easier to go further places to go to conferences. j. Besides funding, what else can SGA do for you? i. SGA can make us feel more secure. We didn t have very many members in the past and with SGA approval now, we feel like we can be more of a part of the Hofstra community. a. Motion to skip debate and go straight to a vote on passing this club to become SGA recognized i. Seconded 4. Vote to recognize Anthropology Club ii. Pride Productions 1. Club Speech ii. 20:3:0 Motion Passes, moving straight into a vote. a. By a vote of 22:1:0 this club passed and is now an SGA recognized club a. President of Pride Productions: Pride Productions is involved in the PR and Media department, and I wanted to start this as a club because pride production as a club is a good experience for TV and film students as well as engineering students and journalism students but it is open to everyone. We have 40 current club members, but over 150 on our list. We cannot support the clubs needs with these many members. We need funding for equipment, and shirts. We want to take the next step to become SGA recognized to make this a bigger club on campus. We are different from the HEAT network because we have to focus on just the sports and academic events. We cannot have any other oversight on other events. 2. Questions from Senate a. Besides funding, what can SGA do for you? 5

i. We re having trouble having students outside of the television field to join our club we would love to see engineering students. We want people outside of Hofstra to notice this organization; it s more exposure than funding that we want. b. What is the situation in terms of your camera systems? Are you looking to upgrade and expand that or are you looking for funding more for club activities? i. We are looking for funding to support club activities right now, our technology is top of the line and we won t need an upgrade in technology for a while. c. How would you like to spread your message to campus? i. Social media is big for us. Our social media coordinator works in the school of communication. Also we want to spread our club through club events. Before we became a club, we weren t able to attend in the past. d. What is your current source of funding? i. Media source at Hofstra funds technology and PR department because they wanted to see some of the academic events held live for example the debates. We want people to say, let s tune into Hofstra. It became an organization for students to get involved. e. What are the main events or items you would use SGA funding for? i. Meetings, social gatherings, TV production, etc. f. What is the most expensive thing that your club has to pay for? i. $12,000 but we are not going to need an upgrade like that for a long time. There are occasional things, things break and we are in the middle of fixing cameras and if it is anything significant, the media department does cover it. g. Motion to extend questioning time by 2 minutes i. Seconded ii. Motion Passed, questioning time was extended h. Do you use the department of communication tech equipment? i. No, we use completely different equipment. We are a different department and we have our own equipment that is stored in the athletics department. i. Who is your advisor? i. Director of media relations and assistant vice president of media relations at Hofstra University. j. Have you reached out to clubs to expand your membership? i. We ve reached out to WRHU and we ve gained a lot of journalism majors from them and one engineering student came from them. I have tried to get in touch with science departments but have not been successful. k. Motion to extend questioning time for one minute i. Seconded 6

3. Debate ii. Motion passed, questioning time was extended for one minute. l. How do you want to spread Hofstra Pride outside of Hofstra? i. We air live and make all of the graphics and we post everything on YouTube. We ve been a great resource for local high school events and it makes the children see how intense the political program is at Hofstra and in turn we help students find a career in this. a. Speaker For #1: I want people to realize how much this club does for the school. They do an outstanding job and they work so hard. They provide so much spirit to the community and they stream every sporting event that needs to be streamed and it would be a mistake if we didn t pass them. We wouldn t need to fund them for a lot because the university supports them. They want to show Hofstra off and Hofstra is an amazing school and putting Hofstra out there to other students is amazing and if we pass them it brings the school more exposure. b. Speaker Against #1: I agree the organization is great but there are two things that concern me. They really wanted to be recognized by SGA for t-shirts and social gatherings and it would go against the precedent we set If we passed them knowing that. I asked them if we reached out to other organizations and they have only reached out within the communication school so that doesn t show they have the drive to work out to clubs outside of their department. I would like to work with them before they are recognized. c. Speaker For #2: The Communication Department is one of the most well known schools at Hofstra. Club is coming not coming just for funding. They are coming for exposure. This if the first club to come for PR reasons and we shouldn t deny them of this. d. Speaker Against #2: They are coming to get more club members and to have but they are already officially a club. They only wants SGA recognition to fun e. Motion for a moderated caucus, two speakers, 1 minute speaking time i. Seconded ii. Motion Passed f. Moderated Caucus i. Senator Parbat 1. They specifically stated they weren t coming in just for SGA funds and that they want SGA recognition for exposure. Retention is a huge factor with our clubs. Students will join and then members just leave. ii. Senator Durand 1. We should recognize this club because the things they are requesting for could fit under recruitment. I do believe it would be advantageous for SGA to recognize them because we could work with them and collaborate and gain exposure with ourselves and we would be helping them reach other people. g. Motion to extend moderated Caucus for 3 minutes, 1 minute speaking time i. The Chair did not see the motion h. Motion for moderated caucus 1 minute, 2 speakers 30 seconds per speaker 7

i. Seconded ii. Motion Passed 20:3:0 i. Senator Stengel: When we debate clubs, it s not all about money and what we can do for them. We should ask what they could do for us. By putting our name on something a lot of departments in the university are invested in is good for us too. j. Senator Wright: They focus on academic events, not just sports. 4. Vote to recognize Pride Production Club a. 19:4:0 Pride Productions is now SGA recognized b. Resolution for Room Selection Assignment Process i. Debate ii. Motion to Skip debate and go straight into a vote 1. Seconded 2. Motion Passes, senate will now vote to pass resolution iii. Vote to pass resolution for room selection assignment process 23:0:1 VII.
