American war of Independence 2. Spread of new philosophy 3. Expansion of Trade 4. The belief of the lawyers and administration that no group in society should be privileged by birth.. Rise of new ideas that society should be based on freedom and equal laws and opportunities for all. 6. Any other relevant point. (Any five points to be explained) x1= The system of estates in French society was organized:- 1. Peasants made up about 90 per cent of the population. However, only a small number of them owned the land they cultivated. About 60 per cent of the land was owned by nobles, the Church and other richer members of the third estate. 2. The members of the first two estates, that is, the clergy and the nobility, enjoyed certain privileges by birth. The most important of these was exemption from paying taxes to the state. 3. The nobles further enjoyed feudal privileges. These included feudal dues, which they extracted from the peasants. Peasants were obliged to render services to the lord; to work in his house and fields, to serve in the army or to participate in building roads. 4. The Church too extracted its share of taxes called tithes from the peasants, and finally, all members of the third estate had to pay taxes to the state.. These included a direct tax, called taille, and a number of indirect taxes which were levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt or tobacco. The burden of financing activities of the state through taxes was borne by the third estate alone. 1x= The Nazi regime used language and media with care, and often to great effect for popularizing its racial world view. 2. Nazis never used the words kill or murder in their official communications. Mass killings were termed special treatment, final solution (for the Jews), euthanasia (for the disabled), selection and disinfections. Evacuation meant deporting people to gas chambers. 3. Nazis ideas were spread through visual images, films, radio, posters, catchy slogans and Page 3 of 8 3 x1
4 leaflets. 4. In posters, groups identified as the enemies of Germans were stereotyped, mocked, abused and described as evil.. Propaganda films were made to create hatred for Jews. The most infamous film was The Eternal Jew. Orthodox Jews were stereotyped and marked. 1x= 1. Hitler assigned the responsibility of economic recovery to the economist Hjalmar Schacht who aimed at full production and full employment through a state-funded workcreation programme. This project produced the famous German superhighways and the people s car, the Volkswagen. 2. In foreign policy also Hitler acquired quick successes. He pulled out of the League of Nations in 1933, reoccupied the Rhineland in 1936, and integrated Austria and Germany in 1938 under the slogan, One people, One empire, and One leader. He then went on to wrest German speaking Sudentenland from Czechoslovakia, and gobbled up the entire country. In all of this he had the unspoken support of England, which had considered the Versailles verdict too harsh. These quick successes at home and abroad seemed to reverse the destiny of the country. 3. It is a very long and detailed document. Therefore it needs to be amended quite regularly to keep it updated. 3. So, they made provisions to incorporate changes from time to time. These changes are called constitutional amendments. 4. The Constitution describes the institutional arrangements in a very legal language.. Like any Constitution, the Indian Constitution lays down a procedure for choosing persons to govern the country. It defines who will have how much power to take which decisions. 6. It puts limits to what the government can do by providing some rights to the citizen that cannot be violated. (Assessed as a whole answer) Marks Apartheid was the name of a system of racial discrimination unique to South Africa. The system of apartheid divided the people and labelled them on the basis of their skin colour. 2. The apartheid system was particularly oppressive for the blacks. Blacks could not form associations or protest against the terrible treatment. 1x= Constitution is the supreme law that determines the relationship among people living in a territory (called citizens) and also the relationship between the people and government. A constitution does many things Functions: 1. First, it generates a degree of trust and coordination that is necessary for different kind of people to live together; 2. Second, it specifies how the government will be constituted, who will have power to take which decisions; 3. Third, it lays down limits on the powers of the government and tells us what the Page of 8
6 rights of the citizens are; and 4. Fourth, it expresses the aspirations of the people about creating a good society. ( 2+3=) 2 1. Thus, they are able to arrange for the capital for farming from their own savings. Some farmers might also use the savings to buy cattle, trucks, or to set up shops. 4. Most small farmers have to borrow money to arrange for the capital. They borrow from large farmers or the village moneylenders or the traders who supply various inputs for cultivation.. The rate of interest on such loans is very high. They are put to great distress to repay the loan. 1. People involved in trade (exchange of goods) are not many in Palampur. 2. The traders of Palampur are shopkeepers who buy various goods from wholesale markets in the cities and sell them in the village. 3.
