5 Vade-mecum of the speakers Bendetto IPPOLITO, Professor of History of Philosophy, Roma Tre University and Gregoriana University, Rome Benedetto Ippolito graduated in Philosophy at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan in 1998 where he earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy in 2002, after attending the DEA at the Université de la Sorbonne-Paris IV from 2000 to Already Counsellor Administration of the Telecom Italian Foundation and Member of the Scientific Committee from 2008 to 2011, is currently a Professor and Researcher of the History of Philosophy at the University of Roma Tre. And member of the Strategic Committee IPALMO (institute for international relations between Italy and the countries of Africa, Latin America, Middle and Far East) and Board of Directors of Cisem (Interdepartmental Centre for Ethics in the field of Military Studies). It became part, also, of the Economic Social Craxi Foundation Committee and the Technical and Scientific Committee of the CESMA (Aeronautical Military Studies Center). Former collaborator of «Ants», «Mondoperaio», «Sheet», «Future» and «Reform», is the author of numerous scientific publications. It became writing to Sispm (Italian Society for the Study of Medieval Thought) and SFI (Italian Philosophical Society). Allan S. JANIK, Professor in Philosophy, University of Innsbruck Allan Janik, citizen of both Austrian and the United States, is a philosopher and historian of ideas. He is senior research, fellow of the Brenner Archives at the University of Innsbruck and honorary professor of philosophy at the University of Vienna. His many books include Wittgenstein s Vienna (with S. Toulmin), The Concept of Knowledge in Practical Philosophy (in Swedish), Style, Politics and the Future of Philosophy as well as the study Towards a New Philosophy for the EU (Foundation for Political Innovation 2008). He is especially interested in problems surrounding the European Union s democracy deficit, the nature of participatory democracy and the role of conflict in democratic society. 5

Member of the board of directors of the Porto Trade Association, chairmen of the General Assembly of RAR Group and regular commentator in various branches of the media («Conselho Superior» RDP Antena 1 on Mondays, «Palavra e Poder» in newspaper Público on Tuesdays, «Prova dos Nove» in TVI24 on Thursdays). Awarded the Grosse Verdienstkreuz mit Stern by the Federal Republic of German (2009); the Council of Europe s René Cassin Prize (1989); the D. António Ferreira Gomes Prize (1986). Branislav STANICEK, Member, Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, London Member of the EIN since 2003, Branislav Stanicek is Member of the Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London and Administrator at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels. He studied Geopolitics at Sorbonne University and International Law at Harvard University. His publications for EIN include topics such as social implications of the financial crisis, youth unemployment and demographic changes. Previously to his appointment at the Committee of the Regions he worked at the Foundation for Political Innovation in Paris. 6

7 Vade-mecum of the speakers Antonio TAJANI MEP, Vice-President of the European Parliament, former Commissioner Born in 1953 in Rome. He did classical studies at the Torquato Tasso secondary school, Rome, and obtained a degree in Law from La Sapienza University, Rome. He was an Officer in the Italian Air Force, worked as an Air Defence Controller and was Head of the Operations Room monitoring Italian and European civil and military air traffic. He was also a professional journalist and Editor of the Italian weekly Il Settimanale. He presented a radio news programme for RAI 1. He was Head of the Rome editorial office of the Italian daily Il Giornale, a special correspondent in Lebanon, the Soviet Union and Somalia. In his political life, he was Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Transport from 2008 to 2010 and for Industry and Entrepreneurship from 2010 until He is Vice-Chairman of the European People s Party, elected at the EPP Congress in Estoril in 2002, re-elected in Rome in 2006, again in Bonn in 2009 and in Bucharest in He is a Member of the EPP Group Bureau, which prepares the Group s position for European Council summits. He speaks Italian, French, English and Spanish. MEP and since Francesco TUFARELLI, General Secretary, Automobile Club d Italia and former Head of Staff of the Minister for EU Affairs (Letta Government) Previously Head of the Office for Sport at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Director General for specific studies and co-ordination activities related to the Presidency of the EU and EXPO Head of the Staff of the Minister for Eu Affairs in Head of the Staff of the Minister for Cultural Heritage Rocco Buttiglione. He teaches Administrative and EU Law at Roma Tre, University of Rome. 7
