Thanks to Diana Kingsbury, Gerri Hall, and Bruce Greer for their hard work in creating and posting the 2014 Voters' Guide. We apologize to Judge O'Brien and the voters who rely on our guide for information. If you know of a community event where the League can register voters and answer questions about voting access please us a lwvaa@lwvaa.org. March, 2015 LWVO Statehouse Day May 15-17, 2015 LWVO Convention Cincinnati, OH President's Message Here we are again. The US Supreme Court limited

Here we are again. The US Supreme Court limited early voting in Ohio in N.A.A.C.P. v. Husted on September 29, one day before early voting was finally scheduled to begin. You can vote! You can t vote yet! You can vote now! Or, can you? Vote if you have a state ID (but not a college ID), or a utility bill, or the card we sent to the wrong address. Vote here this time now go vote over there next time. No one votes here anymore. You can vote here if you wait in this line long enough. Oh, you have a crying child? You have to go to work? Well whose fault is that?! Do you see a pattern? Is this efficiency, economy, and protection from voter fraud? You know who really perpetuates voter fraud? Not poor black women with young children. Not poor white men with low wage jobs. Not illegal Mexican workers. The issue of voter fraud is perpetuated by those who have the most gain from frightening people into agreeing to more restrictions, shorter hours, more id, and less participation in our democracy. Why should one of your most important civic duties a right and responsibility that each American over 18 can exercise in the way she or he sees fit be limited to ten hours one or two days a year? Why is less voting more democracy? It s not. Voting is a fundamental American right that League protects. We promote access to the ballot not obstacles. We are non-partisan, so in our Voters Guide (unlike those published by local newspapers editorial boards) you will not find endorsement or recommendations. We don t run attack ads and we don t call you at home at 6:00 at night. We do sponsor candidates nights, hold forums, moderate debates, offer information, answer questions, observe elections and public meetings, and register voters. We will help change your address, look up your polling site, and confirm that you (yes, convicted felons, you too) can vote for the candidate of your choice The League is a volunteer organization. All your local Leagues are run by volunteers and supported by

Leagues are run by volunteers and supported by donations and dues. Our overhead is low. But we still need money for flyers, room rentals, postage and the other necessities of non-profit life. If you believe in what we do - and the low key, grass roots way we do it - please join us by adding your name to our membership list. Join with others in your community to protect and promote access to the ballot and the voting rights of your friends and neighbors. Jill C. Cabe President, League of Women Voters of the Akron Area LWVO All Member Call Tuesday, October 7, 12-1pm The guest speaker will be Brian Rothenberg from Progress Ohio, who will lead a discussion about charter school accountability. To join the call, dial and enter pin #. Acme Cash Back It is time to start saving your Acme register tapes. The Cash Back window runs until February 8. Judicial Candidates Night Our first collaborative event with Hudson and Tallmadge was held September 30. We had a great turn out at the Hudson High School Library and 21 of the 22 candidates attended. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive from candidates and attendees. Candidates were especially pleased with the numbers of voters they could interact with in one sitting instead of having

they could interact with in one sitting instead of having to travel to three separate events. Students from the Bliss Institute and the University of Akron School of Law assisted as facilitators. A grant from LWVO assisted in funding this event. Our next collaborative function will be a post-election wrap up discussion with Dr. Steve Brooks of the Bliss Institute at Tallmadge High School on November 20. LWVO Volunteer Opportunity LWVO is working to conduct surveys of voters who use the early in-person voting opportunities. We will be conducting surveys in six counties: Cuyahoga, Lucas, Summit, Montgomery, Hamilton, and Franklin. We are looking for volunteers in any/all of these counties on: Friday, October 3, 2014 from 11-2; Monday, October 6, 2014 from 11-2 and 5-9; Sunday, October 26, 2014 from 1-5; and Sunday, November 2, 2014 from 1-5. Training and materials will be provided in advance. Volunteers should contact the LWV Ohio office at or Carrie at cdavis@lwvohio.org to sign up.

Election Day Poll Monitors Needed Poll Monitors are needed to stand outside assigned polling places across the state to assist voters on Election Day.
