1 MASTER HISTOIRE SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND POLITICAL PARTIES, CULTURES AND INSTITUTIONS IN WESTERN EUROPE IN THE 1960S AND 1970S Professeurs : Gerd-Rainer Horn Marc Lazar Année universitaire Semestre : Automne 2017 Type d'enseignement : Séminaire Nombre d'heures : 24 Langue d'enseignement : anglais This seminar on political and transnational history concentrates on the interactions between social movements and political parties, cultures and institutions operating in Western Europe in two central decades of social movement culture: the 1960s and 1970s. After a definition of the relevant concepts guiding our seminar, several topics will receive close study: the development and the historical pathway of social movements as well as associated themes, their collective action repertoires peaceful or, on occasion, violent, their forms of organization, but also the communication and circulation of their ideas; the institutional responses (repression, integration or reappropriation of their agendas), including the responses by political parties to the social movements under review; finally, possible changes in political cultures (party-political, ideological/spiritual or national) resulting from the operations of social movements. The guiding principle behind the seminar will be to present another way of looking at the evolution of European democracy and the conduct and/or forms of politics - as well as the development of political cultures at a key moment of transition in the recent history of Europe. The literature will cover processes and events in a variety of countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. Methodological and source-critical questions will be systematically raised in the course of this seminar which is based on student-teacher interaction. 5 ********************************** Validation Students have to carry out the required readings each week, and the seminars will be discussion-based. It means we will have an interactive pedagogy. Two (or three) students will have to present an oral introduction of about ten minutes for each seminar. Part of the task will be to furnish concrete questions to stimulate the ensuing discussion. All students will have to present six (6) position papers for class sessions in which they are NOT giving an oral presentation. Three of these position papers have to be written for sessions led by Marc Lazar, the other three for sessions led by Gerd-Rainer Horn. These position papers should address some specific points emerging from some or all of the readings for the chosen weeks. These position papers should have a maximum length of 350 words, and they must be submitted electronically to professors Horn and Lazar by midnight on the Sunday preceding each seminar session. Students will also have to write a paper of words on a topic to be discussed and approved by us in advance. The deadline for the final paper proposal to be submitted electronically is Saturday, 21 October, midnight. The deadline for the Final Paper to be submitted electronically is Sunday, 03 December, midnight. For every day of delay in delivery of your Final Paper, we will have to subtract one point of the notation scale of % for the student presentations 25% for the general participation in the discussions, including the six position papers 50% for the Final Paper addresses: gerdrainer.horn@sciencespo.fr marc.lazar@sciencespo.fr 5
