2 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: May 6, 2009 Analysis of Himachal Pradesh Lok Sabha Elections 2009 Shimla, May 6, 2009: (HPEW), part of National Election Watch (NEW) has been working on electoral & political reforms and is monitoring the candidates for 2009 Lok Sabha Elections. It has come out with analysis of 30 affidavits from 4 constituencies of Lok Sabha Elections in Himachal Pradesh. The following pages give the number and percentage of candidates, constituency wise as well as party wise, criminal records, total assets (more than Rs.1 Crore), PAN card declaration and educational details. All the candidate profiles considered in this report are now available at (The data is available for 30 of 31candidates, as of now.) Highlights: No. of Candidate with Criminal Record is 1 i.e. 3.3 % compared to nationwide average of 15.47% till now. 9 (or 30%) candidates have total assets of Rs. 1 crore & above. 33.3%of candidates (10 out of 30) have not furnished PAN card details. 5 candidates have liabilities of more than Rs.20 lacs. Average assets value of INC candidates is Rs 6 crores, of BJP is Rs 2 crore s & of BSP is Rs 79 lacs. 8 candidates have been found who contested in 2004 elections. The average increase in individual assets has been 557% with one candidate showing a jump of over 3722%. Around 57% candidates(17 out of 30) are graduates & above. Number of women candidate is only 1(3.3%) from RWS (Rashtrawadi Sena) SMS and Helpline Campaign We have started a helpline and SMS campaign to enable voters to get information on candidates background to help them make an informed choice while voting. Initially the information based on 2004 affidavits only will be provided.
