She said that the assembly of intellectuals and policy makers has made a significant contribution towards the development of thought on critical issues. This has marked only the beginning of a process but with a resolve to engage ourselves with greater challenges in the scholastic arena, she said. The Gulf and Pakistan remain on high pedestal from the geo-strategic perspective in view of its images as the life-line of the world economy and relevance for peace and progress in a transregional setting, she said adding that it was therefore important to realize that search for stability is very much contingent upon the interplay of the region-based interests with that of the predominant extra-regional stakeholders. Chairman Advisory Board of the CPGS, General (retd) Ehsan-ul-Haq, and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee termed the launching of the think tank as a long overdue initiative. Stressing the need to develop structure and initiate dialogue, General Ehsan said he was confident that it would effectively advance the common goals. Addressing the seminar, member advisory board of the CPGS and Chairman Middle East Center for Strategic and Legal Studies, Major General Dr. Anwar bin Majed bin Anwar Eshki said: The US is strong not because of weapons, but due to its strategic centers. Dr. Eshki enlisted human resource, religion and geography that are reinforced by culture and civilization as important factors in relations between the two blocks of Gulf countries and 42

43 Pakistan, which presents exceptional opportunities for all stakeholders. The two interactive working sessions in the seminar initiated an academic debate on the challenges confronted by the region, while emphasizing the importance of dialogue and peace. The seminar was attended by diplomats, intellectuals, scholars, former top brass, students and the civil society members. The first session was moderated by Lt. Gen (R) Agha Muhammad Umar Farooq, SVP of CPGS, and Faheem Al Hamid, Assistant Editor-in-Chief Okaz Arabic and Saudi Gazette. The paper on The emerging Dynamics of energy Security of the Gulf Region: Prospects and Challenges was presented by Tahir Sher Muhammad while Air Commodore (R) Khalid Iqbal spoke on Afghanistan Sans Foreign Troops and Options for Pakistan. The second working session was conducted by General Eshki and Dr. Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, Dean Faculty of Contemporary of Studies at the National Defense University (NDU). Ambassador Arif Kamal spoke about Pak-Gulf Relations: Past, Present and Future. Mr. Syed Shaukat Hasan, Director, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) made a presentation on the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy: Pakistan s Experience as well. In his concluding remarks Editor-in-Chief Urdu News, Saudi Arabia, Tarek Mishkhas remarked, Creation of the CPGS is a step in the right direction and was needed much before. Emphasizing the importance of research and dialogue, Mishkhas said it should be the beginning for creating a net of think tanks in the region to provide a road map for our leadership for our future. 43

47 Pakistan seeks international community support to deal with terrorism 21 st February 2013 ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira has urged the international community to extend full support to Pakistan for the eradication of extremism and terrorism, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported on Thursday. Addressing a seminar on Innovating Pakistan and Gulf Relations in Islamabad today, he said we not only need the economic but also moral support and patience from the world to fight the 47

48 extremist mindset. He said we want to fight this war for the future of the region and the entire world. We have no option but to win this war. Referring to the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in the war against terrorism, Qamar Zaman Kaira said Pakistan is passing through a very difficult time of history. Pakistan has achieved some major success in this war but these elements continue to breed. These terrorists want to impose their agenda on the majority and we can only foil their designs with collective wisdom and action. The information minister said democracy is the only solution to fight terrorism and establish a tolerant society. All the political parties of Pakistan will have to stand united for success in this war. He said Pakistan believes in the dialogue process to address this issue. Meanwhile, he thanked the Gulf countries for standing by Pakistan at every hour of trial including natural calamities. Kaira further said the solution to all the problems lies only in democracy. He said there is a need to promote tolerance and patience in the society. The information minister said it is bad luck that country has been divided into political, regional and religious factions. He said we will have to make the country secure for the sake of our children. He said after the soviet intervention conditions had worsened in the region and the entire civilized world had supported our dictators. He said peaceful conditions in Pakistan and Afghanistan are in the best interest of the entire region. He urged the international community to cooperate us in fight against terrorism and extremism. He said Taliban want to impose their mindset on us, adding that Gulf States always helped Pakistan. 48

49 West responsible for extremism in Pakistan: Kaira 21 st February, 2013 Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Thursday Western countries were responsible for extremism in Pakistan therefore these countries should first keep in mined this reality before blaming Pakistan. He expressed these words while addressing as a key note speaker at a seminar arranged by Centre for Pakistan and Gulf Studies. The information minister further said all Western countries promoted jihadist elements and supported religious school in Pakistan in order to use them against Soviet Union. But when Soviet Union left Afghanistan, the Western countries left the region without doing anything about the monster they had created. And that monster, Kaira added, was now become a constant headache for all of us. He urged the Western world to help Pakistan overcome extremism so that this region could make progress. The information minister said, government was sincere in election process and every effort shall be made to ensure free and transparent elections. Welcoming the establishment of the CPGS initiative as a fresh breeze of air, in its inaugural seminar Innovating Pakistan and Gulf Relations, the chief guest said: With these platforms we ll be able to succeed in giving the proper narrative and project our perspective. It is indeed the vehicle of our vision and a pace-setter for intellectual pursuits that we promise in this regard, President CPGS said while elaborating the aims and objectives of the think tank as to promote regional harmony, global peace, security and stability by making substantive intellectual, academic and diplomatic contributions. The most effective means of developing comprehension and understanding is mutual dialogue, she stressed. We believe in the dialogue, and a federal Pakistan is the only option, Kaira said while stressing support from friendly countries not only in the economic sector, but moral and political spheres. He added: There is no option we have to win this war, if we fail it s not only us but the entire region would fail. Chairman Advisory Board of the CPGS, General (R) Ehsan-ul-Haq, and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee termed the launching of the think tank as a long overdue initiative. Stressing the need to develop structure and initiate dialogue, General Ehsan said: I m confident that it (the CPGS) would effectively advance the common goals. 49
