3 UNHCR International - Refugee Women and Self-Reliance UNHCR Korea Newsletter With You - Summer 05 Refugee Women, Building a Life of Their Own Among the refugees headed to Europe in early 2016, for the first time, there were more women, including women travelling alone, pregnant women and women with children, than men. In 2017, 70% of the refugees headed to Europe were men, but since 2016, about 60% have been women and young children. With the number of refugee women increasing, crimes committed against them as well as deaths among them due to pregnancy and childbirth related causes are also on the rise. One in five women who are forced to flee experiences sexual violence more than half of the Burundian refugees in Tanzania have indicated that they have experienced sexual and gender based violence. 60% of childbirth related deaths occur in conflict situations, as refugee women do not have access to medical information and maternal health services. Living as a refugee and a woman means a struggle to survive on a daily basis. While fleeing, refugee women are vulnerable to violence, such as sexual violence, kidnapping, detention, and exploitation. At temporary shelters, like transit centers, women have to spend days in a confined space with male strangers. In refugee camps, refugee women are subject to sexual violence and early marriages. Even when they want to participate in economic activity or decision-making process, they are discriminated against socially because of the lack of experience. Such barriers become obstacles to refugee women, particularly girls, pregnant women, older women, women with disabilities and women heads of households, who have suddenly become responsible for an entire family in the absence of husbands and fathers. However, refugee women around the world are not falling into despair but showing their courage and will to build their future. With UN Refugee Agency s support, these women are becoming self-reliant in a safer environment and with their rights being protected.

4 UNHCR International - Refugee Women and Self-Reliance UNHCR Korea Newsletter With You - Summer UNHCR Supports Refugee Women s Livelihoods and Self-Reliance As the number of people who are forced to flee reaches the highest ever recorded, the number of women who are responsible for family s livelihoods, after losing male family members to conflict, is sharply increasing. More than half of Syrian refugees in Lebanon are women, and the households under their responsibility are more than 40% of the total Syrian refugee households. Among the internally displaced in Yemen, the households that rely on women s income have now grown to 30% after the conflict, compared to 9% before. Research shows women heads of households, without male family members, are more vulnerable to crimes and violence, and are at a higher risk of not receiving legal and social protection in conflict situations. For refugee women, economic self-reliance is difficult to achieve. When refugees settle in a local community outside refugee camps, self-reliant livelihoods is essential to meet basic needs for the household. On average, a refugee spends 20 years as one, which is one of the reasons why having basic capabilities to maintain livelihoods is important. Self-reliance is one of the most important tests when refugees settle in a new community, but it is also one of the hardest tasks to achieve. Regardless of the ability and experience gained in home communities, it often becomes difficult to get an opportunity to work, just because they are refugees. Moreover, refugee women often have no work experience outside their home, and find it difficult to work up the courage to start working and simply, to get a job. Taking all this into account, UNHCR began to focus on refugee women s activities at home. Programs began to help women develop their craftsmanship and cooking and sewing skills to the level where marketable products can be manufactured. With UNHCR s support, opportunities have been created where women can become economically self-reliant in their daily routine. The programs were designed initially to promote women s livelihoods and self-reliance, but there have been unexpected, positive side-effects as well. The refugee women who benefited from a variety of livelihood and self-reliance programs invest on average 90% of their income in their family s future, such as education. Support for one refugee woman is changing the lives of everyone in her family, and all the refugees. UNHCR s Programs to Promote Refugee Women s Livelihoods and Self-Reliance UNHCR helps refugee women to develop cooperatives within refugee camps by providing skills training and market access in order to become self-reliant. Refugee women can receive training on production and manufacturing in sewing, fabric-dyeing, fashion design, and basket-weaving as well as on marketing skills and financial management. Women s Cooperatives Many refugee women are artisans who have mastered their traditional skills and craftsmanship that have been passed down from generation The UN Refugee Agency is helping refugee women to receive professional culinary training, to hold cooking classes for locals in their host community, and to be employed as cooks at local restaurants. MADE51 Project: Supporting Refugee Artisans Culinary Training Program to generation. UNHCR helps modernize their traditional skills in basket-weaving, textile, carpetweaving, and metal hammering, and provides training to develop product lines. Through partnerships with ethical social enterprises, UNHCR also began a new project, MADE51, that sells these products to consumers everywhere. Refugee artisans receive the proceeds from the sales as well as regular salaries. MADE51 not only provides support to refugees to become more selfreliant but also helps keep traditional crafts alive, preserving cultural heritage of many communities around the world. Tree Nursery Project for Refugee Women The UN Refugee Agency s new project helps protect refugee women, promote their self-reliance, and at the same time, protects environment. Refugee women have to walk as far as 10km to get firewood for cooking and heating, and often experience violence and assaults on the way. To prevent this, fruit trees and timbers have been planted inside refugee camps so that the women can easily get firewood and also earn income by selling fruits and wood. No need to give refugee women a voice. They have one already and it is strong, wise and clear. Let us just listen to it. How UNHCR Supports Refugee Women s Livelihoods and Self-Reliance - Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees - What does self-reliance mean to refugee women? Education Livelihood Leadership Health ❶ ❷ ❸ ❹ Restoration of daily routine and psychological stability can help heal physical and mental trauma. Getting self-esteem back can give them strength to rebuild their lives. An entire refugee family unit can enjoy a better life. Refugee women s ability to earn income contributes to lowering the mortality rate of children, due to preventable diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, and pneumonia and to increasing the likelihood for the children to get an education. As members of the community who gives back after repatriation and as members of the new community who makes a positive contribution, the women can rediscover their identity. More education for refugee children Safer environment, more teaching equipment and supplies, gender-specific bathrooms, and safer classrooms Literacy program for refugee women Support for self-defence and sporting activities for women Specialized training on agriculture, sewing, animal breeding, cooking, languages, and computers Cash assistance and microloans for start-ups Market access for refugee women-made products Banking training on savings and loans More opportunities to participate in the local community and decision-making process Leadership training for women Support for women s cooperatives Medical services and psychological counselling for victims of sexual and gender based violence Medical services for maternal and child health

5 UNHCR International - Refugee Women and Self-Reliance UNHCR Korea Newsletter With You - Summer Stories of Refugee Women: Rebuilding Lives with Their Strength Refugee Women on Life s Runway RefuSHE Kenya s Safe House is a shelter for refugee women and children who fled conflict, sexual violence and abuse. The majority of the women who live here are victims and survivors of sexual violence. Every week, a very special fashion show is held here. There are no lights, and there is no stage. But every single item on the collection is special. The clothes are made as the result of MADE51, a new initiative by UNHCR. Refugee women have made the clothes themselves from the traditionally-dyed fabric from East Africa, after learning fashion design and sewing. A variety of clothes, scarves, and bags are being sold online around the globe and the proceeds are reinvested into the programs for The star of this week s fashion show is a 23-yearold, Josephine. She grew up in a refugee camp and was forced into survival sex. Despite the terrible experience she had to go through, Josephine is a survivor, and a role model to other refugee women at RefuSHE. As of early 2018, more than 3,000 refugee women went through the program. The women have survived unimaginable exploitation, violence and abuse on their journey to safety, and now are going to school to learn fashion design and sewing. Just like the models on the runway, they are confident and strong just the way they are going to live their lives. Hit Three Birds with One Stone : Refugee Women Planting Seeds of Survival, Selfreliance and Peace 25-year-old Eli has lived as a refugee for the last twenty years. She and her family fled the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) when she was five. Today, Nyarugusu refugee camp is her entire world. However, with a major influx of refugees from neighbouring Burundi and the DRC into Tanzania, the familiar life at the camp was becoming more difficult, and put more pressure on its already limited resources. The biggest impact was felt when acres of trees were cut down to make way for agriculture and to supply firewood and timber. As the size of the camp became larger, the host community in Tanzania began to lose access to the forest, and the tension between the Refugee women regularly left the camp in search of firewood, travelling as far as 10kms away. There are all kinds of dangers on these remote, isolated roads. Stella is a mother of two and a friend of Eli s. One day she travelled five hours with other refugees to get firewood, and was beaten by local people. The beating took a long time. Some of us were cut with knives. The children were with me too. Even now I feel the pain in my body and in my head. But now there is hope. Since late 2017 with UNHCR s support, refugee women like Eli and local people have planted 800,000 fruit tree and timber seedlings in Nyarugusu camp. Once rooted, they will be transferred to the camp and host community. In addition, 100,000 trees have been raised in a nursery in Nduta Refugee Camp, and in total, UNHCR has planted about two million trees in three refugee camps in Tanzania. UNHCR has also planted the seeds for refugee women to become self-reliant. Through the nursery project, refugee women in Tanzania are learning horticultural skills and earning US$15 per month. They are free from the tension with local people and risks of violence. refugee women and for their self-reliance. refugees and locals grew. The most difficult thing in life for me is to accept what has happened to me. But I need to focus on the future, and leave the past behind. - Congolese refugee, Josephine - I am really enjoying the opportunity to work here. I used to have to walk three hours to get firewood. Now there are trees right in front of my eyes. I can also make money. I am so thankful. Refugee Women Become Chefs 20 Syrian refugee women have become successful chefs in Lebanon through a culinary training program. 6 Interview With You - UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Series 6: Kristin Davis UNHCR Korea Newsletter With You - Summer 11 UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Series 6: Kristin Davis I can t imagine going through what these children and their families have gone through, Supporting Young Fiona s Dream On her visit to Uganda, Kristin met a young South Sudanese refugee, Fiona Taba, an 18-year-old woman living in Rhino refugee camp in Northern Uganda. Fiona is a talented tailor and dreams of being a fashion designer one day. Fiona s parents were killed in front of her when she was 15. With her aunt who found her shortly after, Fiona then fled to Uganda. Together with Rohingya Refugee Children on United Nations Universal Children s Day Marking the United Nations Universal Children s Day, Kristin visited Kutupalong Refugee Camp in Bangladesh on 20 November Having witnessed the difficulties that the refugee children faced, Kristin called for strong support from the international community. much less having the strength, resilience and extraordinary bravery these children possess. When my parents died, I was frightened, but I had to be brave because being frightened would not help. So I found courage and decided to flee with my aunt. We hid in bushes, ate grass and travelled to the border together. It took us a month to find safety. After arriving in Uganda as a refugee, Fiona received a small grant from UNHCR What shocks me the most about the Rohingya refugee crisis is the number of children who had to flee their homes. More than half of the refugees in the camp are children under the age of 18. Some of them have to train as a tailor. At the end of the training, she was given her own sewing machine and a small business loan. Fiona repairs and sells the second-hand clothes she bought at the markets or makes new clothes out of them. Working lost one or both of their parents, and they are on their own now. These children have endured unimaginable hard in funky blue and yellow hair, Fiona is leaving the difficulties from her past behind and following her dream, with ideas and passion for fashion. horrors and violence, and then a harrowing journey to safety. In DRC, Kristin met with Sister Angelique Namaika, the 2013 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award Recipient, for her contributions to protecting refugee women and girls in Dungu. camp alone, after her father died during the war and her mother deserted her; Jeannine who was abandoned by her husband after she was raped and gave birth to a baby with disabilities; and 72-year-old Marie-Therese who had fled Burundi after her husband was murdered and her belongings stolen. Their stories and hardships moved Kristin. Kristin also witnessed the moment when a Congolese refugee Catherine, who had been left alone with her baby in Gihembe camp for 20 years, was resettled in the United States and reunited with her family. Working Together to Protect Refugees UNHCR Korea hopes Kristin s commitment and passion to protect refugees would become a starting point for many to better understand the pain and difficulties of refugees around the world and to join in protecting and supporting them. *Read more about GWA Kristin Davis's work

Make a Special Day More Special - Donate Your Anniversary or Birthday UNHCR met with one of our very special supporters on May 18. Han Kyong-rok is the bassist of a popular Korean rock band, Crying Nut, who are known for their songs such as Speed Up Losers and Oh! What a Shiny Night. Mr. Han became a regular donor to UNHCR in 2012 and since three years ago, has been giving a special gift on his birthday every year. Here is an excerpt from our written and face-to-face interview with Mr. Han Q. For the last three years, you have donated to UNHCR on your birthday every year. What made you start the birthday donations? I started playing music at Hongdae in 1995, and used to have my birthday party with other musicians at a fried chicken place in the area. Then the parties became bigger and bigger, and I had to rent a venue for the party and performances. We have been calling the event Kyong-rok Jeol (Day), and it s become a festival with fellow musicians. I thought, with so many musicians around, it would be more meaningful to add something to my birthday party to share that special day. So I started celebrating my birthday by donating to UNHCR on every Kyong-rok Jeol. Q. There are many refugees who find consolation and comfort in music. Do you have any plans to make music for refugees, or help them out as a musician? How about we put together a rock festival with UNHCR? I think it would be great if there were opportunities for musicians to support UNHCR more actively. During the festival, there could be activities to raise awareness of refugee issues and UNHCR s work around the world. Q. Could you recommend some music that could comfort refugees who had to leave their homes behind and go on a difficult journey? Five-Minute Laundry is a song on Crying Nut s 7th album. The lyrics go, It s alright, it will be alright, we re alive today, and I think this is what I really want to tell refugees right now. It s alright, it will be alright. No matter how hard it gets, it s amazing to be alive and we have tomorrow. After a brief meeting with the UNHCR Korea staff, Mr. Han volunteered to work the UNHCR booth in Hongdae as a campaigner and spoke to those who dropped by about UNHCR s work. Our big thank-you to Captain Rock for his continuing support and his participation in our public outreach activities. Celebrate Your Birthday and Special Anniversaries with UNHCR! For UNHCR, our special and precious moments happen with our supporters stories and participation. Just like Mr. Han who has been supporting UNHCR regularly for 7 years and adding a special gift on his birthday, why not give a special gift on your special days? It would mean more possibilities for refugees. Your joy will be doubled when you donate on your special days. We would like to give our special thanks to our supporter Ms. Lee Ryul-ah who began giving to UNHCR on her birthday in February She has been supporting us ever since. Her donation has helped refugees around the world including many refugee children who can now get an education as a result. Thank you. *For more details on how to donate on your birthdays, contact us at , UNHCR Korea selected for Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) Young Professional (YP) Program UNHCR Korea has been selected to participate in the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) Young Professional (YP) Program in the second half of KOICA s ODA YP provides young talents with opportunities to work in international development. Here is an update on our work in Bangladesh where Rohingya refugees have been seeking safety since August Rohingya Emergency Monsoon season has begun and more than ever, Watch Rohingya emergency response video Rohingya refugees need your support now. Rohingya refugees: fleeing violence When violence broke out in Myanmar s Rakhine State on 25 August 2017, more than 720,000 Rohingya refugees are seeking safety in Bangladesh, as of late May The Rohingya are a stateless Muslim minority who have lived under discrimination and extreme poverty for decades. To survive, they hide in the forests and fields, travel through jungles, mountains, and rivers, and brave dangerous sea voyages. They arrive exhausted, hungry and sick and the vast majority of Rohingya refugees reaching Bangladesh are women and children. They burnt our house and drove us out by shooting. We walked for three days through the jungle. - Mohammed, a Rohingya refugee with seven children - Monsoon season, another threat to Rohingya refugees With the influx of refugees, two UNHCR-run refugee camps of Kutupalong and Nayapara in Bangladesh are now bursting at the seams, and new arrivals have to stay around the camps in public facilities such as temporary shelters, schools, community centers or rely on the generosity of local people. Right now, the refugees need shelter and basic assistance and services, all of which are crucial to their survival. They are also facing another threat with the start of the monsoon season, which expects to bring, on average, 2,500mm of rain to the area. According to UNHCR s statistics, 72% of the annual rainfall here is concentrated between June and September. During the monsoon season, the lives of refugees will be at higher risk because of heavy rain, flooding, and landslides, and refugees are in a desperate on the frontlines to respond to the humanitarian needs. We have provided temporary shelters and 1,500 tons of emergency lifesaving aid, including clothes, plastic sheets, sleeping mats, kitchen sets, blankets, mosquito nets, jerry cans and flashlights, to over 250,000 refugees. We have installed 500 latrines (8,000 in construction) and 59 wells where refugees can access and use clean water. We are also providing medical and family reunification services, particularly for unaccompanied minors who are arriving without parents or guardians. In preparation for the monsoon season, we are working to prevent loss of life and facilities. Together with Rohingya refugees, we are strengthening the ground and shelters where they live and building high bridges as well as fortifying corridors and walls. UNHCR is distributing 80,000 pre-monsoon kits and 160,000 post-disaster response kits to refugees, and has relocated 360 shelters to safer areas.
