1 HUMANITARIAN CRISIS MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME COX S BAZAR MONTHLY UPDATE June 2018 BRAC has been providing life saving services through a multi-sector response since the influx began in August We are working closely with the government and other partners through the Inter Sector Coordination Group. BRAC has been working in the Cox s Bazar region for the last 32 years, including specifically with the Rohingya population from previous influxes. We are pursuing an adaptive, phase-wise strategy that sequences our interventions to provide integrated services to displaced people and host communities. SITUATION UPDATE The month has been marked with heavy downpours, strong winds and infrastructure damage. Basic service provision continued in parallel with repairs despite seriously restricted access. Population of newly developed sites continued, which included relocations for risk mitigation and infrastructure development as well as new arrivals. Shelter and infrastructure strengthening continued. 20kms of road was completed and an electricity line was extended for 13km. 40kms of road was rehabilitated in host communities. A major focus for BRAC now, in addition to disaster response initiatives for the monsoon season, is livelihood interventions in camps and host communities. This includes initiatives such as: Home gardening: 105,861 households received vegetable seeds Cash for work: 49,896 days completed Skill development: 60 trainees in host communities finished three-month training courses in their chosen professions and all are employed. A further 40 are now being trained. 8 training spaces and one purpose-built stand-alone skills centre established in the camps, and 1,666 women already participating in handicrafts. Temporary learning centres transitioning to semipermanent structures Supportive charts and workbooks on days, animals, fruits, colours and numbers developed for children in the learning centres in camps All teachers equipped with psychosocial training. 60 learning centres damaged 51 repaired 9 (in landslide-prone areas) decommissioned Drainage systems constructed around all centres to reduce water logging and improve accessibility. SHELTER & NON-FOOD ITEMS (cumulative) 56,040 shelter grade tarpaulins, 28,565 solar lights, 124,271 normal clothes, 42,670 warm clothes distributed. 2,385 new long life solar lights distributed Neighbourhood response kits designed for disaster response distributed amongst 276 majhis (community leaders). Kits consist of wheelbarrows, shovels, spades, ladders, empty sand bags, bamboo baskets and steel pans. 420 households damaged by rain and strong wind provided with shelter materials 69 families relocated following landslides and flooding Fire service training ongoing, with an eventual goal of providing 750 community volunteers with fire fighting skills and knowledge. WASH (cumulative) 18,116 latrines, 5,004 bathing cubicles, 3,975 hand washing stations, 24 faecal sludge management plants constructed 81,613 hygiene sessions conducted. 4 SECTOR ACTIVITY: JUNE Snapshot of key initiatives on the ground HEALTH : 11 primary healthcare centres 30 community health outlets 362,316 outpatient consultations conducted and 617 babies delivered in primary healthcare centres to date. Preventive, promotive and curative primary health care, reproductive health, family planning, nutrition promotion, maternal and child health care Particular focus areas included outbreak preparedness and active response planning. All primary healthcare centres damaged by heavy rain and all repaired 11 Oral Rehydration Therapy corners activated to prevent and treat dehydration, particularly due to diarrhoea. PROTECTION (cumulative) 22,808 people made aware of relevant legal information and rights 3,113 adolescent girls received skilled psychosocial support. 253 awareness sessions and focus group discussions conducted with boys and men, and ambassadors selected for future initiatives First purpose-built stand-alone skills centre operational 8 training spaces operational 1,666 women and girls learning tailoring and handicraft skills. 200 households requiring shelter relocation and shelter kits referred to site management Protection Emergency Response Unit actively reporting incidents Women Friendly Spaces used as emergency shelters after heavy rains destroyed houses. COMMUNICATION FOR DEVELOPMENT 40,000 households regularly receive life-saving messages 800 majority-female community mobilisation volunteers going door-to-door every day 80 community mobilisation managers. Life-saving messages on health, hygiene, nutrition, sanitation, shelter, disaster response and protection delivered every day Volunteers listening to feedback, encouraging people to attend facilities and referring people to service providers. 2,500 incidents reported to branch managers and disaster risk reduction teams Damage mitigation measures taken based on reports Volunteers mobilising people to move out of high-risk areas.

5 SECTOR ACTIVITY: JUNE Snapshot of key initiatives on the ground CHILD PROTECTION 221 child friendly spaces in camps and host communities 100% female teachers 428 unaccompanied/separated children identified and 40,633 children registered to date. 56 community-based child protection committee members trained to identify vulnerable children and offer protection support World Cup football games screening by popular demand in ten child friendly spaces as an alternative entertainment initiative. 6,395 children receiving tracking bracelets in case they are lost or separated Children under age 10 located in flood/landslide prone areas prioritised 7 lost child and caregiver meeting points activated with emergency necessities. AGRICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT (cumulative) 36,929 trees planted in camps and host communities 105,861 households received vegetable seeds 512,266 square feet of area covered by vetiver grass. Plantation of four varieties of large, fast-growing trees (mahogany, neem, arjun and acacia) and two varieties of medicinal trees (neem and arjun) Distribution of vegetable seeds (bottle gourd and bitter gourd) and fruit saplings. Regular reporting and referrals for damaged trees Continued planting of vetiver grass, which helps to stabilise soil and protect against erosion. SITE MANAGEMENT 3 camps continue to be managed by BRAC 14 footpaths, 9 pavements, 26 drains repaired 77 stairs and railings constructed in steep locations. Camps 1 East, 1 West and Kutupalong Registered Camp continued to be managed by BRAC Assessment ongoing to find vulnerable households which will be particularly impacted by adverse weather conditions Identification of facilities to be used as emergency spaces during emergency temporary relocation. Counselling and motivational sessions conducted with safety unit volunteers (recruited from camps) who responded to flooding and landslides People living with disabilities and vulnerable families prioritised for relocation and porters arranged to support with emergency relocation.
