3 Preparation Some 26.4 million people are displaced by disasters each year. 38 million people are currently displaced by violent conflict, unable to return to their homes. CRS teaches families to build weatherproof homes by incorporating raised foundations to withstand flooding and tying down roofs to avoid detachment in high winds. Our climate-smart agriculture programs teach farmers how to protect lands and crops during extreme weather, including droughts and storms. CRS helps communities build wells and storage facilities for their crops, and holds farm tool and seed fairs, which means people are less likely to be forced to migrate in search of food. 9 Recovery and Resiliency Your support allows CRS to stay with communities rebuilding after a crisis. Besides homes and community infrastructure, we also focus on strengthening people s skills, opportunities, income and potential. IRAQ Child support centers offer a sense of normalcy and the chance to heal for some of the nearly 2 million children displaced by ISIS campaign of terror. 10 Recovery and Resiliency LEBANON CRS, with our local partner in Lebanon, provides classes to 350 refugee children driven from their homes in Syria by devastating violence. The children also receive a meal each day. The routine of classes can give them a sense of normalcy and help them heal. Photo by Sam Tarling for CRS. PHILIPPINES CRS provided emergency support immediately after Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013, focusing on rebuilding sturdier housing. When Typhoon Hagupit hit the region in December 2014, the newly constructed shelters withstood heavy rains and wind.
