UNHCR/ David Azia 2017 DONOR REPORT THANK YOU FOR PROTECTING FAMILIES FORCED FROM HOME DONOR REPORT THANK YOU FOR PROTECTING FAMILIES FORCED FROM HOME UNHCR/
UNHCR/David Azia Ivorian refugee Tahadi (left) and her twin sister Hawae, smile as they sit with a friend in Little Wlebo refugee camp in Liberia. You saw the need. And you responded. The world is a better place because of you. You saw the tragic news stories, gasped at the heartbreaking photos and took the time to read our letters, s and updates. And then you opened your heart and gave, changing lives in the process. This report will demonstrate how your compassion and generosity are saving the lives of some of the world s most vulnerable people those who had no choice but to leave everything behind. I m so grateful they have you to rely on. The turmoil caused by humanitarian crises in our world shows no sign of slowing down in the coming year. But thanks to your support, we will continue to be there, providing the essentials of life and a future for refugees everywhere. Thank you. 2 UNHCR 2017 DONOR REPORT

MEXICO UNHCR/Viviana Murillo Your Reach: The World Refugees are fleeing violence and discrimination all over the world. Your support means no matter where children, women and men find themselves in search of safety, we can be there too. COLOMBIA Violence in Colombia continues to uproot thousands of people, making it only second to Syria for the most internally displaced people. Your partnership is helping families access housing, land and jobs and guarding their basic human rights. ECUADOR UNHCR/Viktor Pesenti When a 7.8 earthquake struck Ecuador, hundreds were killed and 73,000 displaced from their homes. Your donations enabled us to mobilize within hours to send 50,000 sleeping mats, 18,000 mosquito nets and 900 tents to frightened and distressed families. 4 UNHCR 2017 DONOR REPORT
SYRIA The war in Syria is far from over, but 2016 saw an end to a four-year struggle for the city of Aleppo. Last year, we assisted 92,000 internally displaced Syrians with shelter interventions. UNHCR/Vivian Tou meh UNHCR/Cengiz Yar IRAQ UNHCR/Alexis Huguet We built 11 camps in northern Iraq to shelter up to 120,000 people from Mosul and the surrounding area. Your support also provides life-saving emergency relief packages to help families still in the battle-scarred city. UNHCR/Jiro Ose NIGER Boko Haram drove about 100,000 people from their homes in early 2016 including local villagers, people already displaced from other parts of the country and Nigerian refugees. Your support meant we were able to respond quickly to their urgent needs. SOUTH SUDAN About 640,000 South Sudanese have fled to Uganda to escape the brutal violence of the country s civil war. Thanks to your generosity, we re giving these refugees many of whom are children food, water, shelter and protection. 2016: YOUR IMPACT AROUND THE GLOBE 5
Your Impact: Shelter So much more than a home When families are forced to flee, one of the first things they need is a safe place to stay. But shelter is so much more than that. Imagine being forced to leave your home, even your country, to protect yourself and your family from war, persecution or natural disaster. Where would you sleep? How would you protect your children at night? Shelter is vital to families and individuals fleeing these unsafe situations. Not only does it provide protection from the harsh elements, it gives displaced families the dignity and privacy to deal with their trauma and a place to plan next steps. It creates a home base for the whole family from which they can receive assistance and services. 6 UNHCR 2017 DONOR REPORT In 2016, in response to the record number of people forced to flee worldwide, we launched Nobody Left Outside, a global campaign to fund appropriate shelter for all the refugees, displaced people and asylum seekers in our care. Thanks to your support, we re providing shelter of all shapes and sizes from emergency tents to temporary housing to rental assistance. When home is far behind, you re giving refugees a place to hope for the future. UNHCR/Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo Young friends play at the temporary settlement for families affected by the Ecuador earthquake HIGHLIGHTS 10,510 TENTS FOR FAMILIES IN TANZANIA 9,000 COLLECTIVE SHELTERS REPAIRED FOR PEOPLE IN IRAQ WEATHERPROOFING KITS GIVEN TO 146,740 PEOPLE IN LEBANON SEMI-PERMANENT SHELTERS BUILT FOR 46,863 PEOPLE IN TANZANIA AND RWANDA 908 ADDITIONAL SPACES IN 17 SHELTERS, COMMUNITY CENTERS AND SAFE SPACES CONSTRUCTED/REHABILITATED WITH UNHCR S SUPPORT IN MEXICO
UNHCR/Sebastian Rich SAFE AT LAST Little Mamie arrived at our camp in Tanzania in January 2016, clutching a worn and well-loved doll. She and her family were among the refugees who arrive from Burundi every single day. Families in Burundi have faced an escalation in horrific violence since Your support is helping us build camps and create urgently-needed safe places for young children like Mamie. Mamie clutched her favourite toy for the long and dangerous trek to safety. Speaking with her inside her shelter, she demonstrates an innocence so typical of childhood. I brought my favourite toy, my doll with me from Burundi but I still don t like it much here, she admitted. Eight-year-old Mamie, her mom and younger sister fled violence in Burundi and are adjusting to their temporary home at the Nduta refugee camp, in Tanzania. For her parents, the most important thing is that their children are safe. They were happy to be given a family tent, so that they could all stay together and start the process of healing and planning for the future. YOUR IMPACT IN FOCUS 7
Your Impact: Urban Refugees Helping refugees in cities and towns The majority of the world s refugees are in urban areas. We re reaching out to them with an innovative, effective solution. The current refugee crisis shows no signs of slowing down. As the number of people on the run increases, many are seeking safety in cities and other urban areas. The majority of today s refugees live outside the safety and services of refugee camps. Unable to legally work, many urban refugees struggle to survive. Far too often, large families live in one room, or in abandoned buildings, with no heating and not enough money to buy food or medicine. 8 UNHCR 2017 DONOR REPORT Your support is allowing us to respond to this crisis in an innovative and effective way through cash assistance. UNHCR launched cash assistance over 30 years ago and now offers it in over 60 countries. By giving cash to refugees through secure ATM transfers, we re allowing them to retain their dignity while buying food, medicine, clothing, rent and other necessities of life for their families. Thank you for making cash assistance a smart way to help urban refugees HIGHLIGHTS $32 MILLION IN CASH ASSISTANCE DISTRIBUTED IN JORDAN 136,240 REFUGEES REACHED THROUGH CASH ASSISTANCE IN JORDAN $97 OUT OF EVERY $100 DONATED TO CASH ASSISTANCE GOES DIRECTLY TO A REFUGEE FAMILY IN JORDAN UNHCR/Yorgos Kyvernitis A Syrian family in Greece shops for groceries thanks to the UNHCR cash assistance program for urban refugees.
THE KEY TO SURVIVAL Budoor, 35 (shown with her daughter Julnaar, 21 months) stands in the stairwell outside the family s rented apartment in Jordan. UNHCR/David Azia Budoor is a young mother with worries and fears most could not even imagine. She fled war-ravaged Syria with her seven children and, although they escaped the bombs, their challenges are far from over. The eight of them now live in a tiny apartment in Jordan, where they are barely surviving. To make matters more difficult, her 12-year-old son Alaa suffers from a blood disorder that requires regular medical care. Thanks to your support, we re able to give Budoor cash assistance every month to help with rent, food and medical costs. This winter we also helped her buy heating fuel and warm clothing for her children. By easing the burden of everyday survival, Budoor can focus on making plans for her family s future. Thank you for helping Budoor, and so many other moms like her. YOUR IMPACT IN FOCUS 9
Your Impact: Mosul Inside a battle-scarred city Mosul s families have gained freedom, but the war is still having devastating consequences. After more than two years trapped inside Iraq s second-largest city, thousands of Iraqis are relieved to be free of tyrannical militant rule. But life has taken on a new kind of hardship. Nearly 530,916 people have been displaced from Mosul since the offensive began to retake the city from extremists in October Now living in camps or bullet-ridden homes with no power, Mosul s families are in desperate need of assistance. Your generous support has helped us hand out thousands of kerosene heaters, blankets, sets of winter clothing and other emergency supplies to families uprooted by the conflict HIGHLIGHTS Harith Al Janabi, 55, Assistant Shelter Officer for UNHCR Iraq laughs with some of the many children of Al Jamea'a camp in Central Baghdad. ELEVEN NEW CAMPS WERE BUILT IN PREPARATION FOR THE OCTOBER OFFENSIVE, READY TO HOST 120,000 PEOPLE EMERGENCY PLANS WERE PUT IN PLACE TO PROVIDE TENTS AND SUPPLIES TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT REACH THE CAMPS THERMAL BLANKETS AND QUILTS WERE GIVEN TO 11,200 PEOPLE AROUND MOSUL WHO HAD FLED THE CONFLICT 10 UNHCR 2017 DONOR REPORT

Children from Mosul adjust to their uprooted life A little girl and her mother are among thousands waiting to be admitted to the Qaymawa camp, while more arrive every day. UNHCR/Rasheed Hussein Rasheed Three friends smile for the camera as night falls in the recently-opened Hasansham camp for families fleeing the fighting in Mosul. Bubbles and spirits soar high as children play at a camp for internally displaced Iraqis about 30 km from Mosul. UNHCR/Ivor Prickett UNHCR/Caroline Gluck YOUR IMPACT IN FOCUS 11
