SAVING A GENERATION THROUGH EDUCATION
Syria is the biggest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time, a continuing cause of suffering for millions of Syrians. Over 5 million people have fled Syria since 2011, seeking safety in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and beyond. The crisis has impacted Lebanon more than any other of Syria s neighbours. This small country of 4.5 million people is now home to 1.5 million refugees; one in four people in Lebanon is a refugee, giving the country the highest number of refugees per capita in the world. More than 500,000 refugee children have been officially registered leaving out many more without registration, and a lot of children have been born into refugee families within the past seven years. Education is every child s basic human right. Education is lifesaving for these children. Its benefits are not as immediately apparent as those of food and shelter, but nevertheless these children will be able to uplift themselves and their families if they learn certain basic skills of the mind, such as reading and writing should be guaranteed to every person on Earth as fundamental human rights. Going to school also provides them with a sense of stability and normality. A school is a space for structured and safe socialization, and a protective barrier against violence and conflict. It is an oasis of hope and caring in a desert of indifference and despair. KAYANY Foundation has a proven track record of providing Syrian refugee children and youth with the quality education they deserve. 1 executive 2 summary executive summary
Kayany is a Lebanese non-governmental organization founded in 2013 to assist and educate the most vulnerable Syrian refugee children. We provide free and secular schooling to more than 3,000 refugee children between the the ages of 6 to 14, and to more than 300 Syrian refugee girls between the ages of 14 to 18. Our clean and comfortable learning environments offer students one meal a day and an escape from the difficulties of settlement life. We teach basic numeracy and literacy, as well as the Lebanese curriculum, which includes science, math, art and the English language. Our schools are accredited by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. Our goal: to save a generation through education. KAYANY operates educational programs for Syrian refugee children living in informal tented settlements. They are some of the world s most marginalized group of children. Kayany has partnered with the American University of Beirut s (AUB) Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service (CCECS) and the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) in constructing seven school campuses. This unit model is easily assembled and dissembled, endures severe weather conditions, and is built by refugees from low-cost locally found material. The GHATA design has proven highly efficient for direct intervention in the Informal Tented Settlements (ITS). It is the only model approved by the Ministry of Social Affairs in Lebanon. Kayany initiated seven Ghata projects in four locations in the Bekaa governorate. We partnered with the Malala Fund to construct and administer two all-girls secondary and vocational schools. Kayany s past and current partners include: the Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA), AUB-CCECS, Malala Fund, Reach Out to Asia (ROTA), Save the Children, Jesuit Refugee Service, Teach for Hope Syria, and Rotary International, among others. In addition to creating welcoming, child-friendly spaces, we also offer child protection programs and distribute uniforms, backpacks, hygiene kits and winterization kits. 3 executive 4 summary executive summary

Telyani and Nahreya Schools PROGRAM STRUCTURE for all Elementary Schools The Lebanese official curriculum is provided to students from grades 1 to 6. In the summer of 2014, two schools were established in central Bekaa: Teach for Hope-Syria School and the Kuzbari & Rotary Germany School. Combined, these two schools educate a total of 1,200 Syrian refugee children in two shifts with the younget children attending the morning classes. Child Protection and Psychosocial Support is provided at each school by a full-time social worker that conducts psychosocial support and resilience sessions. Capacity Building through providing regular teacher training with experts from AUB and UNESCO. In Early September 2015, a three-year partnership was formed with Jesuit Refugee Service in Lebanon, which includes two of Kayany s schools in Bar Elias, Bekaa. This partnership has secured the sustainability of these schools for the coming two years by collaboratively supporting the education program and the psychosocial activities for the students. 7 Telyani 8 and Nahreya Schools Telyani and Nahreya Schools
REACH OUT TO ASIA (ROTA) Following a successful partnership with the American University of Beirut (AUB), Kayany Foundation was chosen to be an implementing partner in a project funded by Reach Out to Asia that comprised building learning centers for Syrian refugee children in the Bekaa governorate. The project is divided into four components: education, child protection, nutrition, and food safety. Education experts from AUB trained the teachers on classroom management and child-centered teaching methods. Following the training, the professors from the education, nutrition and psychology departments perform observational visits to ensure best practices. In just two years, the two locations have impacted more than 1,890 children between the ages of 6 and 14 years old. The children were also taught using the official Lebanese curriculum. 9 ROTA Additionally, professors from AUB created a nutrition curriculum that was incorporated in the weekly academic program and the teachers got trained on providing sessions on the importance of healthy nutrition through interactive activities with the kids. 10 ROTA
MALALA Upon her first visit to Lebanon on July 2015, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai, inaugurated her first school for Syrian refugee girls between the ages of 14 and 18 in Bar Elias. As a result of the success of the program, which provided educational and vocational sessions, an additional school was established in Saadnayel in May These schools provide accredited secondary education to facilitate the students integration into Lebanese public schools to receive their Baccalaureate degree. Moreover, the girls are provided with vocational and skills training as well as protection programs that strengthen their resilience and increase their opportunity to find jobs. 11 The vocational program includes: sewing and MALALA embroidery, nurse s aid, computer literacy, AutoCad, 12 cosmetics and hairdressing. 11 Other Projects Humanitarian Innovation Lab (HiL) is a UNHCR-funded project that seeks to create a field-based innovation lab and platform that assists UNHCR in streamlining the rollout, testing, and scaling of technologies used to improve communication with communities on humanitarian services and assistance. At HiL, a full-time product development and software engineering team works in partnership with refugees, host communities, and the UNHCR to develop and scale new technological innovations that solve key communication challenges with refugees and vulnerable Lebanese communities. The project will run from June until December PADILEIA: Partnership for Digital Learning and Increased Access Kayany Foundation partnered with AUB, as a subcontractor, on a project funded by King s College London. The project will provide digital skills and preuniversity support courses to encourage and support Syrian and Lebanese high-school graduates with the university application process. The program will be implemented in one of Kayany s schools in Bas Elias, Bekaa governorate of Lebanon. The Innovation Livelihood Project is a UN World Food Program project, in partnership with AUB, that is being implemented in the Aley Governorate. The project will create livelihood opportunities through a digital skills and impact sourcing pilot that can transform the current humanitarian challenge into a development opportunity. Building digital skills through vocational training programs represents a unique opportunity in building sustainable and transferable capacities for the most vulnerable communities, both Syrian refugees and their host communities. Youth Empowerment through Basin Literacy and Numercy and Innovation Skills is a UNICEF funded project. It is a 6-month long partnership, which started in September 2017 and will last until the end of January The goal of this project is to provide basic literacy and numeracy skills and life skill sessions to more than 480 direct beneficiaries, as well as, awareness sessions to 3000 Syrian family and community members in three locations in the Bekaa governorate. In addition to all of this, the project will provide digital and entrepreneurship skills to 250 Lebanese and Syrian youth in the surrounding villages of Bar Elias while also renovating the space to hold these courses. 17 Other 18 Projects Other Projects
