Warm ups *About how much of the Cambodian population was killed by the Khmer Rouge? *How were the Khmer Rouge finally stopped?

Lesson Objective: *describe how physical geography affects the people of the Philippines *discuss current controversial policies of the Philippine government

Philippines *the Philippines are made up of over 7,000 islands *the population of the country is around 100 million!

Philippines *the country has 115,831 square miles, compared with the U.S. having 3.79 million square miles *the Philippines has nearly ⅓ the population of the U.S. *What does that tell you about the population density?

Population Density of The Philippines *Look at the following chart and tell me what you notice about population density in the Philippines tion_density

Population-caused Issues *Is their population growing, or shrinking? *What types of issues could their high population density cause?

Quick Facts *around 8 million Filipinos rely on unsafe, unsustainable, and unimproved water sources *around 25 million lack access to improved sanitation *nearly 80 Filipinos die each day from water / sanitation issues

Ring of Fire *there are around 23 active volcanoes (which is quite a lot, considering the small size of the country!) *there are also many earthquakes that affect the country *What other natural disasters do you think they might be prone to?

Typhoons, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Oh My!

Mount Pinatubo *this volcano erupted in 1991, sending 15 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere, which formed a hazy layer *it is estimated that this lowered the global average temperature by about 1 degree for over a year

Natural Beauty Brings Tourism $ *What does this chart tell you about tourism in the Philippines?

Colonial History *trading outposts were established by various groups in the Philippines *initially, Chinese, Japanese, and even Arab Muslims established different locations around the Philippines around the s

Spanish Period *in 1521, Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese sailor who was the first to circumnavigate the globe, landed in the Philippines *he was killed by locals, but the Spanish (his voyage was funded by the Spanish) went on to contro the Philippines for nearly about 350 years

Spanish Legacy *Philippines have a higher percentage and more Christians than any other country in the region

Spanish-American War *the U.S. defeated Spain in 1898, and we gained control of the Philippines *the Philippines declared independence from us, and resisted, but the U.S. ultimately won and controlled the Philippines until 1946

Philippine-American War *the U.S. lost around 4,500 soldiers during this conflict; most to disease, and around 1,500 in battle *the Philippines lost around 20,000 soldiers and 200,000 civilians as a result, and they were under control of the Americans for decades after

Controversial Government Action *in May of 2016, Rodrigo Duterte was elected president of the Philippines *he gained popularity by reducing crime in a city where he was the mayor

Philippine Drug and Crime Problems *facing large problems with drug use and crime, Duterte promised tough action to reduce crime "Forget the laws on human rights. If I make it to the presidential palace, I will do just what I did as mayor. You drug pushers, hold-up men and do-nothings, you better go out. Because I'd kill you," he said at his final campaign rally. "I'll dump all of you into Manila Bay, and fatten all the fish there."

Fighting Crime *Duterte promised to allow on the spot killings of drug users and dealers *since Duterte took office, it is estimated that over 7,000 extrajudicial killings have happened by law enforcement and vigilantes *many drug users have also turned themselves in to avoid risking being killed

Fighting Crime *in 2016, the crime rate went down 13%, but the murder rate went up *What are your thoughts on this method of reducing crime? *What do we have in the United States that would prevent this from happening?
