Cut out the following cards and decide if they refer to: The earthquake in New Zealand in 2011 or the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 Comparing two earthquakes 185 deaths Emergency services searched for survivors, telephone companies allowed free calls, portable toilets were provided One million people made homeless 98% of rubble still lies on the ground. Long term have come from outside aid agencies Billions of US$ worth of Rescue teams and aid took a long time to reach people. Once there, aid took a long time to be distributed and sat in the airport for days. Thousands homeless at most (10000 homes demolished) Spread of disease was limited Unsafe buildings were demolished, fundraising events held (including a cricket match involving The Hobbit cast, and concerts) Cholera spread rapidly and increased the death toll $15 billion plus deaths Page 1 of 5
Add this information into the following table and complete the last two columns to create a comparison between the two earthquake events. New Zealand Haiti Comparison Explanation Death toll Total costs of Homelessness Disease Page 2 of 5
Immediate Long-term Using examples of earthquakes you have studied compare the effects and of natural disasters in LICs and HICs (9 marks) Page 3 of 5
Teachers notes: You could use this to guide students in the completion of their comparison table. New Zealand Haiti Comparison Explanation Death toll The death toll from the Haiti earthquake was much greater than that in New Zealand Haiti is poorer so a lack of healthcare made it difficult to care for injured, also buildings are poorly built. People in New Zealand may be more aware of how to respond to an earthquake. Total costs of $15 billion plus Billions of US$ worth of The total was greater in Haiti The earthquake focus was shallower in New Zealand. But building design in Haiti, GDP, took longer to respond. Homelessness Thousands at most (10000 homes demolished) One million people made homeless Many more people were left homeless after the Haiti earthquake. It took longer to rehome people in Haiti, and many still live in camps More buildings were d (building design, GDP). It has taken longer for the authorities in Haiti to respond to the needs of homeless people Page 4 of 5
Disease Spread of disease was limited Cholera spread rapidly, and increased the death toll Disease spread quickly in Haiti, whereas New Zealand was unaffected Healthcare in Haiti, GDP, access to healthcare, education. Immediate Emergency services searched for survivors, telephone companies allowed free calls, portable toilets were provided Rescue teams and aid took a long time to reach people. Once there, aid took a long time to be distributed and sat in the airport for days New Zealand responded much more efficiently than Haiti The airport in Haiti was badly d, so aid took a long time to arrive. There were not enough trucks to distribute the aid and rescue teams so they were trapped at the airport. This could have been because was greater due to building standards. Emergency services responded better in New Zealand. Local people in New Zealand were better educated about how to respond. Long-term Unsafe buildings were demolished, fundraising events held (including a cricket match involving The Hobbit cast, and concerts) 98% of rubble still lies on the ground. Long term have come from outside aid agencies Responses in New Zealand were swifter and undertaken by government and local authorities New Zealand is better off, so has the money to respond. Haiti is poorer and relies on outside aid Page 5 of 5
