18 March 11 th, 2011 Japan was faced with a 9.0 earthquake The death toll reached over 10,000 making this the worst Japanese disaster since 1923 Tsunami waves reached 7 metres in height Nuclear instability in the Fukushima plant resulted in a 20 kilometre evacuation Estimated $15-35 Billion in damages 434,000 people currently homeless 8000 people still missing JAPAN EARTHQUAKE ASIA TSUNAMI 18

22 Overcrowded medical facilities resulting in lack of emergency health care 22

27 The recovery starts now... In the coming weeks Red Cross efforts will shift from emergency response to early recovery. 33 The Canadian Red Cross role in Manitoba is to provide registration services, manage shelters, and provide recovery assistance More than 2000 individuals have registered with the Red Cross More than 7000 staff and volunteer hours have been dedicated to this response Red Cross has responded to 24 communities across Manitoba Plans for future shelter surveys put in the place to mitigate future disasters MANITOBA FLOODING 33

37 Massive wild fires grew across Central and North-Central Alberta including Slave Lake and surrounding communities Over 10,000 people have been forced from their homes The complete destruction of important community buildings and infrastructure. Little notice given to families for evacuation resulting in almost complete loss of property Red Cross was called in to support on May 15 th, 2011 ALBERTA FOREST FIRES 37

40 Smouldering coals kept the threat level high 40

41 Canadian Red Cross has set up several shelters with the Alberta government Registration areas have recorded 7841 individuals Successfully placed 324 individuals in interim lodging Phone and information centres remain active and have received over 2500 calls and counting Further response teams are standing by to provide additional assistance in the form of shelter, hygiene supplies and clean-up kits Working closely with the Alberta government to implement a plan to meet the long term needs of the affected populations ALBERTA FOREST FIRES 41
