Human Impacts of Natural Disasters Surf Coast Secondary College Year

Learning Intention I can identify some of the impacts of natural disasters on the human population. I understand why displacement increases the risk of communicable diseases. I can communicate why clean drinking water is essential to human health.

5 min BRAINSTORM : What impact (short and long term) does a natural disaster, like a Tsunami, have on the affected population.

Fact or Myth? Natural Disasters

Dead bodies pose a health risk

Epidemics and plagues are inevitable after every disaster.

It is impossible to identify a large number of bodies after a tragedy.

Foreign medical volunteers with any kind of medical background are needed.

Disasters are random killers

Locating disaster victims in temporary settlements is the best alternative

Things are back to normal within a few weeks

Refugees can manage with less

Energy adequacy means nutritional adequacy

All of the statements were MYTHS Which one/s did you get wrong? Busting the myths:

Our questions for today. Why does displacement lead to an increase of diseases seen in Natural Disasters? Why is access to clean drinking water important during natural disasters? What types of diseases are most prevalent during natural disasters?

Displacement of People

Displacement facts. Figures from mid 2015 estimate that more than 19.3 million people were forced to flee their homes by disasters in 100 countries in Since 2008, an average of 26.4 million people per year have been displaced from their homes by disasters brought on by natural hazards. This is the equivalent to one person being displaced every second.

Long term displacement of people What are some reasons people can not return to their homes after a natural disaster? Picture: Indonesian village permanently evacuated due to Mt. Kelud Volcano

Case Study : Haiti 2010 Earthquake

The Earthquake in Haiti The 7.0 magnitude quake that rocked Haiti on Jan 12, 2010 was the country s most powerful in more than 200 years. More than 200,000 people were killed, and 1.5 million of the country s 10 million people were left homeless. The tremor struck 15 km (10 miles) southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince, and was quickly followed by a series of strong aftershocks of up to 5.9 magnitude.

The Earthquake in Haiti continued.. Thousands of homes, schools and hospitals were destroyed, as well as the U.N. headquarters in Port-au-Prince, the presidential palace and the main prison. Nineteen of the 20 government ministries collapsed. Estimates of damage and losses range between $8 billion and $14 billion. To make matters worse, a cholera epidemic started in October 2010 and spread across the country, killing thousands.

5 years later.. Five years after the quake, tens of thousands of people are still living in tents and makeshift shelters in Port-au-Prince. Slow reconstruction is compounded by donor fatigue, corruption, and political instability caused by delayed legislative elections and anti-government protests. Reconstruction efforts have also been hampered by a series of tropical storms, including Hurricane Isaac in August 2012 and Hurricane Sandy in November 2012.

TASK In a moment you will watch a short clip of Haiti 5 years after the earthquake. You need to come up with at the 3 most important factors that you think are responsible for protracted (continued) displacement of the Haitian people. You will need to be able to justify and argue your point of view, so think carefully.

Time to switch our focus BIOLOGY Multicellular organisms Tutorials for the next 2 weeks 1. Clean water (Microscope skills) 2. Transmission and response to disease (Immune system) 3. Communicable Diseases (Multicellular organisms)

Vocabulary Draw a representation, with a 25 word or less definition for each Communicable Disease Vector borne disease Endemic Epidemic Immunisation Antigen and Antibody

What can t we see? In the next week you will be looking at water samples under the microscope. You need to come up with 1. A hypothesis statement about what you think you will observe. 2. A written justification of three sources you will collect your water samples from.
