A Youth Mobility Agreement was established in 2006 to build upon this history by encouraging the mobility of young Canadians and Norwegians. This Agreement has created new opportunities for young adults between 18 and 35 to gain international experience through work and travel opportunities that allow them to enhance their professional skills and increase their employability within today s job market. Since 2006, many Canadians and Norwegians have already participated in our Youth Mobility Program. While living and working abroad, participants gain cross-cultural understanding, develop their language skills, increase their flexibility, and learn how to work within an international environment. They also return home with an international network of professional contacts and friends that will help them achieve their career goals. Overall, young adults who have travelled, studied and/or worked abroad are more employable and are well-placed to become future leaders in their fields of work and in their communities. 5 requirements cont d Q: Can I enter Norway while my application is being processed? No, you are not allowed into Norway until a work permit has been granted. Q: How long is the permit valid? The permit may be granted for a maximum of one year. There is no minimum limit. Q: Can the permit be renewed? Under the Youth Mobility Program you are allowed to apply for this permit twice in a lifetime. The two permits cannot be given continuously. The amount of time given depends on your travel insurance. The insurance must be valid for the whole period of time you are to stay in Norway. If you enclose an insurance valid for 5 months, you will only get a permit valid for the same amount of time. If you are not sure of your length of stay, it is recommended that you get a travel insurance valid for the maximum time allowed, one year. Then, if you initially wanted to stay for for instance 7 months, but decide you want to stay longer, you can do so. If your travel insurance is valid for 7 months, you do not have the possibility to stay longer. Surfers at Ervikstranda, Stad. Q: What kind of medical travel insurance is required? When applying for a permit under the Youth Mobility Program, you must enclose a valid medical travel insurance covering you for hospital stays and repatriation. Q: Can I have more than one job during my stay? There are no limits as to how many jobs you can have throughout your stay. Q: Can I apply for a permanent residence permit while in Norway? The permit under the Youth Mobility Program does not give you the right to apply for a settlement permit. Q: Can I study while in Norway? You can study at any school or university, but only for the time you have been granted a permit. If you want to pursue your studies in Norway beyond that, you must apply for a residence permit for study purposes. Q: How long does it take to process my application? The applications are sent to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration in Oslo, Norway for processing. The processing time might vary. If you are planning on staying in Oslo, there is a web site for newcomers at Q: Is it easy to get access to a phone or internet? Norway has an excellent choice of cellphones and programmes at a very low cost. Internet cafés are accessible everywhere. Q: Do I need a car? The transportation system in Norway is excellent. All towns offer bus connections from early morning till late night, Bigger towns such as Oslo have an underground and tramways. It is easy to travel around Norway either by bus, train, plane or boat. Q: How are the sleeping accommodations when traveling around the country? There is a great variety of hotels and motels, as well as bed and breakfasts. It is also very popular in Norway to use campgrounds where you can rent small cottages (hytte). All you need then is a sleeping bag. Meet Catherine Sarah Meehan Need more information? My year in Norway has been an exceptional experience and I have had wonderful opportunities that come with living in a foreign country.
